Precious memories of the late Tommie Gorman shared at special Sligo event
Cathaoirleach Bree welcomed all attendees, with a special acknowledgment to Ceara Roche, wife of Tommie Gorman, along with extended family and friends, and those watching the live stream. Speaking at the event, Councillor Bree said: 'Tommie Gorman was many things: reporter, correspondent, interviewer, sportsman, mentor, friend, husband, father. But above all, he was a man of principle — rooted deeply in the place he called home, devoted to its people, and tireless in his efforts to shine a light on the stories that matter. 'His legacy will undoubtedly live on, not just in the archives of RTÉ, but in the heart of our county, in the stands of the Showgrounds, and in the countless lives he touched through his work and his unwavering commitment to others.' Leo Gray, retired sports editor of The Sligo Champion, and Niall Delaney of Ocean FM, joined moderator Adrian Eames, RTÉ sports commentator and producer, for a panel discussion covering Tommie Gorman's successful career as a journalist and correspondent, his lifelong love of Sligo, Sligo Rovers FC, and his unwavering commitment to helping others throughout his life. The stories, memories, and music shared throughout the evening formed a fitting tribute to this remarkable Sligo man. Contributions from the audience highlighting the support Tommie Gorman gave to numerous projects came from Kevin Colreavy, Sligo Rovers Heritage Committee; Simone Hickey, Lest Sligo Forgets; Colm McIntyre, Principal, Ursuline College Sligo; and Maura Gilligan, artist and writer. Seamie and Stephen O'Dowd provided a moving musical accompaniment, bringing the evening to a close with a poignant rendition of Thom Moore's beautiful song, 'Believe Me, Sligo.' The special edition of The Word was supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport, and Media through the Creative Ireland Programme, and can be viewed on the Sligo Libraries YouTube channel.

Lilywhites ready to bloom in maiden Joe McDonagh Cup final
It's been a busy few years for Brian Dowling. Aside from managing the Kildare senior hurlers, was also involved with St Kieran's College's Leinster schools' winning team this year following two All-Ireland titles as manager of the Kilkenny camogie team. Now Dowling is working the oracle with the Lilywhite hurlers as they head to Croke Park this Sunday for their first Joe McDonagh Cup final (live on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player) as a result of four successive wins in the group stages of the competition. They meet Laois who they beat by 11 points - 4-20 to 1-18 - at O'Moore Park, but Dowling says that win will count for nothing on Sunday. "We'll have to raise our level again," he says. "Beating Laois the last day will count for nothing; they are in the exact same position as us now. They are a top-class team with a brilliant manager in Tommy Fitzgerald and a brilliant coach in Niall Corcoran and it will be a great game, I think. Two very good teams will be going hell for leather." Back in 2018, at the annual Kildare GAA convention a 32-page, five-year strategic plan was launched. The Kildare Hurling Action Plan was divided into three main strands – club hurling development, club-school links, and building a club hurling profile. The hurling community in the county wanted to increase numbers playing the game to a high standard. They wanted top-flight league hurling for the county team and there was always the objective of doing well in the Joe McDonagh Cup. Back then they were in Division 2B. Now they have promotion to Division 1B secure and Sunday's McDonagh Cup to look forward to. Behind the scenes former Kildare full-back and county GDA John Doran is driving development and this year's Under-20 side had 11 clubs represented. "We targeted to get to the top two this year," Dowling said. "We felt if things went well, we could get there. "After losing to Kerry it didn't look like it would happen but as the year went we were delighted. We are always seeing improvements but things to work on also. "Winning the Westmeath was a tough game; a big one and it was there to be won. From there we are hurling with confidence." Dowling said he was delighted to get the job and following consultation with his friend and predecessor, David Herity, he felt there was a chance to do something. "It was nice in one way to play Christy Ring last year as we had the chance to get things going. "We could build the thing from there and this year we were promoted to Division 1B, but it's all coming from an incredible effort by different people. "On the pitch the players work hard three nights a week but then focus on video work, S&C and ball-wall sessions outside training. "Outside of the team there are a lot of good people involved - this progress hasn't just happened, and Colm Nolan, Adrian Kinsella and Eoin Stapleton have put in a huge amount of work at development and underage level, alongside John Doran. "It's great to see these people after matches and see how happy they are. But we have another huge test on Sunday and that's all we are focused on."

Limerick homeowners attempt to cash in amid ‘record-breaking' Ryder Cup demand
Brian Higgins, accommodation manager for Accommodation For The Event, a Kildare-based booking tool, said: 'Some bookings began remarkably early, with the first home for the 2027 event reserved as far back as September 2022. 'That was a fully detached home about 25 minutes from the venue,' said Mr Higgins. Accommodation For The Event has been operating for over a decade, supporting Ryder Cup tournaments globally, including the upcoming 2025 event in New York. 'We pretty much dominate space internationally,' said Mr Higgins. 'Even pro golfers contact the office and Matt Fitzpatrick's company was on to us looking to book a property.' Some high-end homes have been listed at striking rates. One property in Clarina has been listed for €85,000. Still, the platform takes a measured approach to pricing oversight. 'If a property is uploaded above market value, we reach out to the homeowner and ask why,' said Mr Higgins. 'But we can't dictate the price. It's their home and they might include extras like airport transfers or food.' For the Clarina property, the large 5-bed home can sleep over 10 people. Included in the price is a large outdoor sitting area and transport to and from Adare Manor. According to Mr Higgins, listings undergo a review process within 24 hours, and homeowners must pay a registration fee, currently priced at €395, to activate their listing. ADVERTISEMENT 'There's a lot of work that goes into the security,' he explained. 'Payments are linked to credit or debit cards, and we verify every listing with a call.' The no-commission platform offers protections for both parties, including spam-filtered inquiry forms. 'The whole process is designed to protect the families and website users,' Mr Higgins added. Security is expected to tighten tremendously around Adare for the event. 'At the K Club Ryder Cup, people within a two-mile radius needed photo ID just to access their homes,' he recalled. Homes are for rent in Tipperary, Clare, Galway, and further afield.
