This Grand Boston Hotel Offers Guests An Exclusive Gin Inspired By The City's Public Gardens

Coterie Gin is Four Season Hotel Boston's customary spirit with a flavor profile that includes rose buds, jasmine flowers, sunflower petals, elderflower and rosemary.
During the latest redesign of Four Seasons Hotel Boston, the property knew they wanted to infuse a stronger sense of place at the new restaurant, Coterie.
The parkside lobby lounge is adjacent to Boston's Public Garden — the first and longest operating public garden in the U.S. — so they looked to local artisanal spirits maker Short Path Distillery to create a gin that captured the botanical essence of this prized green space.
'We are always seeking experiences that bring the heritage and culture of our Public Garden setting to life,' Delainey Rowland, restaurant general manager, food and beverage, told Forbes. So, the team asked Short Path to create 'a floral-inspired gin with a strong juniper backbone.'
Crafted, distilled and bottled in Everett, Mass., Short Path presented the beverage team with nine iterations of the gin before landing on the preferred flavor profile that includes rose buds, jasmine flowers, sunflower petals, elderflower and rosemary. The gin plays perfectly in a collection of signature botanical-centric cocktails, including a selection inspired by the legendary Boston Tea Party on the menu at Coterie.
Additionally, the hotel offers all overnight guests an in-room Coterie Gin & Tonic Trio featuring the custom-blended gin with a sampling of tonics: original, grapefruit and rosemary, and orange & elderflower.
Below, Rowland shares more about Coterie Gin and the ethos of Short Path that was perfectly suited to the Four Seasons Hotel Boston.

Jillian Dara: How did you decide to work with Short Path Distillery?
Delainey Rowland: We work with local makers whenever we can. Short Path uses locally sourced ingredients and combines old-world distilling techniques with a new-world approach to spirit development to handcraft spirits that represent the best of both worlds.
JD: What is it about their brand that aligns with Four Seasons Boston?
DR: Short Path's handcrafted approach reflects the Four Seasons Hotel Boston focus on authentic hospitality, artfully delivered. Their philosophy mirrors our own where we blend traditional luxury hospitality with contemporary innovations.
JD: How else can guests experience Coterie Gin during their stay?
DR: The gin is available in the Royal Suite with assorted mixers and garnishes, as part of the suite's full bar, which is complimentary to guests.
JD: Can you share more about one of the botanical-inspired cocktails Coterie inspired?
The 'Destruction of Tea' is a large format cocktail for two guests, served in a teapot. The gin base is infused with mountain berry tea then combined with lime, thyme and prosecco. Before 1820, the Boston Tea Party was referred to as the Destruction of tea; this is Coterie's take on tea time.
JD: Why do you think it's so important to offer this type of amenity for your guests?
DR: We see increased guest interest in local products on both the dinner and bar menu. In addition to sourcing many of our seafood, meat and produce regionally, we feature a strong selection of local beers, cider and spirits. Plus, it's our goal to bring the character and history of Boston alive for our guests. Our Coterie gin quite literally captures the essence of our Public Garden setting.
JD: Anything else you'd like to share about the proprietary gin?
DR: The gin has inspired a lot of creativity within the Coterie team. In 2024, we offered a monthly rotating Coterie Gin cocktail special, in which each team member, from bartenders, to food runners, to managers in Coterie created their own specialty cocktail with the gin which was offered for a month. This was a great way to create conversation about the gin within the restaurant and guests! We plan to restart this monthly special once we return to the busy season.

Interns are often brushed off for being at the bottom of the totem pole, but at some companies, it's become a part of the secret recipe for landing a gig in the C-suite. Trivago is part of a list of companies, including Nike, HP, and EY, that have promoted former coffee-fetchers to the top of the corporate ladder. In the matter of a month during the pandemic, travel planning company Trivago's revenue forecast plummeted from $1 billion to virtually zero. It was a 'near-death experience' that resulted in a 'deep winter' for the company, according to CEO Johannes Thomas. Actual revenue sank 70% to 249 million euros in 2020 from 839 million euros in 2019, the latter equivalent to about $940 million at the time. But even as restrictions were lifted and travel surged back, Trivago still had not recovered—and thus it was time for a shake-up in the C-suite. 'After you have a near-death experience and three years of depression, you have a team that doesn't believe anymore,' Thomas, who was brought in as CEO to turn the company around in 2023, tells Fortune. But for Thomas and other executives, what's notable about their experiences is not their most recent roles—it's how they started their careers. Thomas first joined Trivago in 2011 as an intern working in online marketing, and he's quietly assembled other former interns, including Chief Financial Officer Wolf Schmuhl and Chief Marketing Officer Jasmine Ezz. Thomas says having leaders who understand the business and its culture from the ground up are key to returning the company to its former glory. And while Trivago's revenue for 2024 was still half what it was five years ago in 2019, first quarter 2025 revenues increased by 22% to $124 million. While retirees are often known for traveling frequently, one of Trivago's focuses is on young people—and it makes sense considering Gen Z's spending habits. The generation was the only group that reported an increase in year-to-year travel spending between 2023 and 2024, according to Berkshire Hathaway's State of Travel Insurance Report. The average trip was over $11,000. '(We're) trying to build an ecosystem—a culture and environment where young people can grow and where people can thrive,' Thomas says. That's another reason why Trivago's C-suite is not stacked with Gen Xers, but instead millennials who understand how young people think, spend, and travel. According to Thomas, the average Trivago customer is 34 years old, and 20% have families. By focusing on young people as a company, Trivago not only is able to tap into a customer market, but also an employee talent market. 'You get rock stars on the senior level football team,' Thomas says. 'And then you have a second team of young talents that have a chance to grow in this combination we try to execute on.' Trivago is not the only company that realized that those with the strongest roots to their company are the best leaders. Last year, Nike became the latest Fortune 500 company to name a former intern as a CEO. Elliot Hill began at the sports-gear giant at age 19 as an apparel sales intern and has only ever had one company at the top of his paychecks. In a statement last year, Hill said Nike has 'always been a core part of who I am.' HP CEO Enrique Lores, Principal Financial Group CEO Deanna Strable, and EY CEO Janet Truncale all similarly went from fetching coffees as an intern to being promoted to the corner office. And while focusing on hard work as an intern may set your path in motion to one day become chief executive, Lores admits that there's also an element of luck. What were your first impressions when you arrived? If you don't know what you're looking for, you won't find The Clubroom. This 1920s-eque, New York-style speakeasy is hidden behind a midnight blue door in a row of shophouses, with only the letter 'C' marked on it. What does 'C' stand for? Club, maybe, or C-suite, or creme de la creme—all point to the type of place this is, an inner sanctum of sorts for high flyers in the business world. What's the crowd like? Deal-making C-suite types, mostly male (as is reflected in the somewhat masculine interiors that include an indigo leather-wrapped curved ceiling), fill the plush banquettes on weekdays. On Sundays, when a special Italian-American menu inspired by Boston-born, chef-owner Travis Masiero's grandfather is served, the vibe is more relaxed. What should we be drinking? This doesn't look like a speakeasy for nothing—the meticulously made cocktails are a must-have. Take a seat at the swish Carrara marble bar and order the Signature Sidecar made with cognac, drambuie, cointreau, and fresh lemon, or the Old Time Bramble, a stiff concoction of navy-strength gin and housemade blackberry syrup. Main event: the food. Give us the lowdown—especially what not to miss. The Clubroom is sibling to Luke's Oyster Bar & Chop House, which has been a C-suite crowd favorite for years, and it serves some of the same impeccably executed American and European classics, like Luke's Lobster Sliders and Luke's Famous Shrimp Cocktail. There are fresh additions, too—of note are the Pasta 'Juliette' (capellini with rock shrimp and zucchini in a moreish house-made pesto), and the indulgent Lobster Omelette with charred avocado and caviar beurre blanc. And how did the front-of-house folks treat you? Service isn't the warmest, but the staff are slick, smooth, and confident with recommendations. What's the real-real on why we're coming here? For well-done classics, yes, but also for that chance to potentially network with a neighboring diner who could power up your next major deal in Singapore.
