Enzo Fernandez's turnaround after being dropped by his boss for lack of physicality and SPLIT from his childhood sweetheart and mother of his children... as Chelsea's key man gears up for Conference L

Daily Mail28-05-2025

In November, Enzo Maresca justified his decision to overlook his £107million namesake by claiming his prefers the physicality of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.
At that stage of the season the Blues were dreaming of an unlikely title challenge after bouncing back from a defeat at Anfield to beat Newcastle 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.
Even at that point, the 2024-25 season could have been charactised as 'eventful' for Enzo Fernandez. The Argentine's campaign began with apologies to his Chelsea team-mates after he recorded himself and several international colleagues singing a controversial song about France's black players in the aftermath of the Copa America triumph.
After proving his contrition, the former Benfica star was re-integrated into the side and even began the term in the starting XI alongside Caicedo. However, following the long-awaited return of Romeo Lavia, Fernandez was shunted to the bench and did not start a four-game spell that included clashes against Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester United and Arsenal.
The Blues came away from the run with a respectable five points but following Fernandez's return to the starting XI, opponents notwithstanding, Chelsea's form became certifiably red-hot.
It's a run in the team that coincided with the talented but injury-riddled Lavia picking up another issue which sidelined him for the best part of five months. And will almost certainly see the 24-year-old start Chelsea's Conference League final against Real Betis.
Enzo Fernandez has produced his finest campaign for the Blues since his huge £107m transfer

The Argentine has enjoyed his most productive season , with seven goals and 13 assists in all competitions
The midfielder's late-season form has even caught the eye of Spanish giants Real Madrid and prompted Maresca to insist his roaming playmaker is going nowhere this summer.
'He's a main player for us,' said Maresca this week. 'He's one of the captains, the leaders and he's been very good. He can be even better next season, starting from the first day.'
Though Maresca has always been publicly supportive of the midfielder, he's never gushed over his star man quite like this. As Cole Palmer struggled and Nicolas Jackson missed an eternity through injury, Fernandes was quietly going about his business.
'Nothing to say about speculation. He's focused on us and this is the most important thing,' the Italian added.
Fernandez should certainly be commended for winning over his manager in a season that has seen him net seven goals and provide 13 assists. His feat is all the most impressive when cast in the light of his off-field struggles.
At the end of October the midfielder split his childhood sweetheart and influencer wife, Valentina Cervantes, to live on his own - despite them having a daughter and son together.
Cervantes followed Fernandez to Benfica when he joined the Portuguese club in 2022, and then moved to London to join her partner when he signed for Chelsea in a deal worth £107m last January. But after a little more than 18 months, the couple decided to go their separate ways.
Announcing the end of their relationship, Cervantes wrote on Instagram: 'With Enzo today we say distance from each other. But we will always be family and support each other through everything. Because there are two kids in the middle that need a lot of our love for them.
Enzo Fernandez split from his childhood sweetheart and mother of his children Valentina Cervantes in November
'I know the person and excellent father Enzo is, and the heart he has. And that's enough for me. They don't want to create wars where there aren't any.'
Argentine journalist Julieta Argenta shed further light on the situation, writing: ''He told her he wants to live life on his own. They're still family, but he feels the need to experience the stage he skipped by choosing family early on.'
The off-field drama continued into the new year after Cervantes revealed that she is 'still in love' with the star footballer.
Cervantes, who moved back to her native Olivia after the split, spoke amid rumours that Fernandez had rather quickly moved on with Argentine rapper-singer Nicki Nicole.
In an interview with La Nacion, Cervantes said: 'I think the love is still there because it is difficult for it to go away so quickly'.
She also opened up on how she's coped with the surprise split as she admitted: 'I took five minutes, literally. Today I don't cry anymore.'
Cervantes, however, suggested that her and Fernandez are now 'on different paths' and opened up the possibility of starting a new family.
She said: 'I bet on falling in love again and forming another family. I am young and I would have a million children'.

The couple were together a number of years after meeting in their homeland of Argentina
Back in December, the former law student also used an interview to reveal she had asked the footballer about rumours he was dating Nicole and had been assured the reports were untrue.
By this point in the footballing calendar Fernandez had firmly established himself in the starting XI and was wearing the captain's armband with some regularity as club skipper Reece James battled back from injury.
In truth, injuries have played a big part in Fernandez's success this season.
If not for the hamstring issue that stopped Lavia in his tracks, the Argentine might not have had a route back into the team.
And if not for the long-term problems to James, Fernandez would not have been leading the side out every week.
Credit must got to the former Benfica star for stepping up when his opportunity arrived. After all, it's now put him in position to make a difference for Chelsea in Poland this week.
With Lavia again unavailable, Fernandez will partner the ever-present Caicedo as the Blues look to claim the first piece of silverware of the BlueCo era.
'At the beginning, he was playing in one way all his life, previously with Benfica and Argentina, but for us, it's more about understanding where he has to stay, but also arrive when we are attacking,' Maresca said of his midfielder earlier this month.
Fernandez capitalised on the absence of Romeo Lavia and ensured he would stay in the team after the Belgian returned
The former Benfica man has the chance to fire Chelsea to their first trophy of the BlueCo era
'I think he scores goals, but he also, in terms of assists, has important numbers.
'I don't have any doubts that starting next season from the first game, he can improve his numbers even more.'
If Fernandez is able to improve again next season the £107m fee the Blues hastily paid to sign him will finally cease to look like a transfer blunder.

Alex Scott consoles Sam Thompson with a hug as he exits Soccer Aid match following another awkward exchange with Louis Tomlinson

Alex Scott consoled Sam Thompson on Friday as he pulled out of Sunday's upcoming Soccer Aid match due to a horrendous calf injury and after he was spotted in yet another awkward exchange with Louis Tomlinson. The TV personality, 32, could be seen smiling as the sports commentator, 40, went in for a big hug during day two of training in Hertfordshire. Alex, who will be hosting Sunday's show alongside Dermot O'Leary, looked effortlessly stylish in a white bodysuit and light-blue denim jeans, which featured distressed details. She sported a pair of chunky white-and-red Nike trainers and further accessorised her look with a gold heart pendant necklace, gold hoop earrings, and a ring. The beauty appeared in high spirits as she joined Sam on the pitch, who sported his England football shirt and shorts. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. The 32-year-old confirmed the devastating news that he won't be taking part in the charity match this Sunday (15 June) during an appearance on Friday's episode of This Morning. It comes after he suffered a string of injuries, including a calf injury, after his 260-mile Soccer Aid challenge at the start of the month in aid of Unicef. Now, instead of playing the game, the reality star will be helping from the sidelines as a coach after doctors told him he can't play. Host Alison Hammond, 50, was keen to know how he's been since his injury, asking: 'Have you recovered, how are you doing?' Sam replied: 'I'm still very sore, still got the torn calf. However, I am here at Soccer Aid HQ and it does not get better than this. 'We've still got the management team of England, we've got Vicky McClure, Tyson Fury, who's stepping into some new shoes and Harry Redknapp... 'But also because I'm not going to be able to run around, you've also got me, part of the management team. Come on baby!' Dermot said: 'So you can't play this year obviously because you're literally falling apart. 'So is that right? You're not going to play but you're part of the management team?' Sam said: 'Yeah I came here with high hopes and went to see Gary the physio and I can kick a ball from a standing start, but when it comes to like general chaos of playing competitive sport there's just no way. 'I can't really run properly so yeah. 'They were very kind and said we still want you to be a part, so I get to go on the dark side with Tyson Fury.' Later on in the episode, Sam returned to speak to Alison and Dermot live from the pitch and was alongside actress Bella Ramsey, Paddy McGuinness and Strictly's Gorka Márquez. Sam said: 'Bella, this is your first time at soccer aid, what're your initial thoughts?', to which she said she was 'loving it'. Paddy said: '....once you're here and you find that everyone is just so lovely, its a really nice vibe and its just magic to be part of.' Sam also touched upon his decision to step away from the pitch, saying: 'I actually will be on the sidelines, Bella I don't know if you're aware of this, I am an England coach now. 'Gary has told me I can't play, which I found quite outrageous as well... but I will be on the sidelines with Tyson Fury. 'I'm also tiny so I don't know if I'm going to be able to get into his ear.' Louis Tomlinson and Sam - who were seen pictured training together on Friday morning - finally came face-to-face at Soccer Aid training on Thursday in an awkward meet-up, and had a similar run-in on Friday morning. Sam has insisted there are 'no hard feelings' after his ex-girlfriend Zara McDermott moved on pretty quickly with singer Louis, 33, following their split in December, and the new couple have been inseparable since going public in March. The 32-year-old confirmed the devastating news that he won't be taking part in the charity match this Sunday (15 June) during an appearance on Friday's episode of This Morning But it remained quite the awkward encounter when Louis and Sam had to train beside one another on the pitch and tried to avoid eye contact while mingling with their other celebrity teammates. The men are on the same England team for Unicef, but tried to not draw attention to themselves as they kept to their own devices, although at one point, they were briefly spotted sharing a glance as 'showboating' Sam gave him a smile. Following the run-in, body language expert Judi James has shed some light on the little interaction they had on the day, admitting their efforts to avoid each other's gaze only acted as an 'attention-magnet'. Speaking exclusively with MailOnline, Judi told how Sam's behaviour suggests he's keen to be seen as 'anything but a loser in love', while Louis appears more 'introverted'. 'There probably was scope for these two guys to connect with a hug or a handshake, no matter how cursory, but they chose to perform a non-verbal 'ignore' of the situation, with Sam being Zara's ex while Louis is very much her current,' she said. 'The problem with ignoring a very obvious situation is that it tends to then act as an attention-magnet, so the presumed goal of not upstaging the charity becomes a bit of a problem.' Judi told how Sam's body language saw him 'showboating' as he looked determined to be on jovial terms and wanted to avoid being seen as 'a loser in love', compared to Louis' more introverted state. 'Both guys present as 'good' guys here though even though their lack of eye contact or other form of greeting tends to lend an air of drama to the event,' she went on. 'They each appear to have adopted contrasting states. Sam's body language puts him in an attention-seeking mode, showboating with a wide smile and animated gesticulation, while Louis appears more introvert, watching the action with a grin rather than instigating it himself. 'Sam's behaviour suggests he's keen to be seen as anything but a loser in love here. His body language looks actively upbeat, confident and excited, suggesting he's moved on since the end of his relationship with Zara. During the first day of training on Thursday, Sam and Louis tried their best to avoid eye contact on the Soccer Aid training pitch at Champneys Tring after the singer started dating the TV star's ex Zara McDermott Sam and Zara confirmed they had ended their relationship in January after more than five years together (Pictured October 2022) 'Louis appears watchful and interested but there's no outward sign of anything competitive or of open resentment from the two men who are both known as nice guys.' Commenting on the moment the two men caught eyes and shared a brief smile, Judi said Sam was sending the more 'active communication' while Louis still remained 'impassive'. It looks like Sam sending a more active communication across while Louis stands in a more impassive pose with his hands on his hips, watching,' she added. 'Sam's partly raised hands and his what looks like a qualifier smile with his upper lip raised, pushing his cheeks up while his mouth falls open looks like a gesture of friendly sporting bravado. 'He seems to have his bicep 'aimed' at Louis to create a message of physical strength here while his hand is curled into a loose fist. 'If there's a friendly but competitive feel to Sam's pose it's not pinged back by Louis, who looks relaxed and unbothered here.' Zara moved on quickly with Louis after her split from Sam, with the smitten couple having been spotted on a string of loved-up outings and holidays since their romance was made public in March. Sam and Louis were spotted trying to avoid each other during the training session but the singer was caught giving the TV star a lingering stare while on the pitch as Sam glanced back. The pair were seen having a kickabout with their fellow players wearing the same blue football kit. Louis appeared visibly awkward as he stood directly behind a cheerful Sam - although it's not known if the pair have interacted with each other behind cameras. But it seems that Sam and Louis will still be keeping their distance from each other in the changing rooms as they have separated spaces. As Sam arrived at the training day, he put on a brave face for photos, while beaming Louis was captured arriving and making his way onto the pitch. And Zara showed her support for her new boyfriend Louis the night before, as she cooked the pair a 'creamy salmon pasta for dinner', as she captured the plate with the singer's guitar noticeably in the background. The new couple have enjoyed a loved-up getaway at his home in LA and to Costa Rica together after Louis flew his new flame out to the island first-class. Meanwhile, I'm A Celeb winner Sam has moved on with Love Island beauty Samie Eilshi, 25. After their blossoming romance was confirmed when they shared a steamy kiss in Mayfair last month, speculation of a split grew after Samie was noticeably absent from Sam's highly-publicised challenge for Soccer Aid last week. Such rumours have since been squashed however, with their romance reportedly going from strength to strength as they 'love spending time together on their days off', a source close to the couple told MailOnline. During an episode of their podcast Staying Relevant last month, Pete Wicks, 37, teased Sam about the prospect of the potentially awkward encounter between him and Louis. The TOWIE star asked his co-host: 'You're really going through it with the whole f****** body and dieting and training loads. Is that for Soccer Aid?' But, not dropping the subject, Pete then asked: 'Any kind of people in there who you're looking forward to playing with?' 'Loads,' Sam laughed: 'Tom Grennan. I'm really looking forward to playing alongside Wayne Rooney, Tyson Fury's the manager. I can't wait'. Pete joked: 'I mean that's gonna be f****** amazing. Make sure you get him on side though because you may need him in your corner in case you fall out with anyone. Not that you will but just in case there's any rivalries or anything. 'You know, you have to train together and it's a lot, you know when you're kind of in close quarters with someone like that. All sorts gets brought up. Anyway...'

Slick Rick returns after 26 years with 'Victory' album and proves hip-hop storytelling still reigns

Hip-hop legend Slick Rick is proving his creative spark is far from fading. The English-born rapper — known for his signature eye patch and masterful storytelling — returned to the booth with his first new project in nearly three decades. He's reminding the world of his timeless rap prowess on his visual album, 'Victory,' released Friday. It marks Slick Rick's first album since 1999's 'The Art of Storytelling.' This new project is largely self-produced, with the rapper handling 95% of the production and sharing executive producer duties with Emmy-nominated actor and occasional rapper-DJ Idris Elba, who appears on the album alongside Nas, Giggs and Estelle. 'You was a young adult, then a middled aged man and now you're an older man, so my mentality has to grow with it,' said Slick Rick, known for his rap classic such as 'Children's Story,' 'La Di Da Di' with Doug E. Fresh and 'Mona Lisa.' His debut album, 'The Great Adventures of Slick Rick,' in 1988 hit No. 1 on the Billboard R&B/hip-hop charts. 'Victory' was four years in the making, with Slick Rick, now 60, writing and recording the album between his birthplace of London then France, while the visuals were filmed in the United States, United Kingdom and Africa. Slick Rick believes his voice still resonates in hip-hop. He said the subjects he tackles have grown with him. 'Can't always be children all the time,' he said. 'We grow and talk about things that interest us at this age.' In a recent interview, Slick Rick spoke with The Associated Press about how storytelling plays a role in today's rap, his relationship with Elba and how hip-hop has no limitations. Remarks have been edited for clarity and brevity. AP: How did you and Idris hook up? SLICK RICK: We met at a party and then we clicked. His people reached out to me, and they wanted to make an album. They flew me to England and France. I hung out with Idris at his cribs, and we just did what we do. We just had fun, And then when we was finished, we said, 'Yeah, we're ready to bring it to the marketplace.' AP: Did you ever feel hesitant stepping back into the spotlight, or did this album feel like destiny? SLICK RICK: It might've been a little hesitation, but you're just having fun. We just bringing it to the marketplace and see what happens. There's no pressure or nothing. We're bringing it to the people to see if they like it. Feed them. AP: When did you feel like this project was ready for public consumption? SLICK RICK: When we were in the studio with Idris doing our thing, I checked the reactions of people. But then I saw people in their happy place. Once I saw that, I'm good. I see him and his people's happy. A little dancing. Popped a little Moet. We were having a good time. AP: You blended hip-hop melodies with various sounds including reggae and house music. What was your vision behind this musical approach? SLICK RICK: It's what Black people like. We're not just hip-hop. We like reggae. We like house music. Let's say like the Beatles or Barry Manilow. We go all over the place. Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross. We go places. We try to entertain ourselves in different areas of existence. AP: What made you go the visual album route? SLICK RICK: It was saving time. People make songs and do videos anyway. So why not just speed this up real quick? Video and rap both at the same time. Boom, let's keep it moving. ... This is like watching a movie. You want to expand the picture. Not only do you hear my voice and the music, which is the essence. You get ... visual picture as well. AP: You produced the bulk of the album. Why did you decide to go that route instead of enlisting other producers? SLICK RICK: In my creative process, I need to have a lot of input or it's not going to be authentic Rick. Too many hands, it's not going to pop. So many hands is going to distort stuff. I do my own music most of the time. AP: What's the importance of rap storytelling in 2025? SLICK RICK: It's an open space. It hasn't been filled, the whole storytelling thing. Before it gets too lost back into braggadocios, one frequency. Expand your horizons. You don't always have to be rough. Be romantic. Be humorous. Be vulnerable. Go all over. Be a politician. Use your imagination. Go places, so we can take stories and give to our people's imagination.

Man City SLASH ticket prices by up to 43% in massive win for fans after years or protesting and TEN YEARS of rises

MANCHESTER CITY have slashed matchday ticket prices following several fan protests. The Cityzens came under fire this season due to a rise in ticket costs. 1 Fans led demonstrations to protest the issue towards the end of the campaign, with thousands refusing to take to their seats at the start of some Premier League fixtures. Club officials subsequently took action, with chairman Khaldoon al Mubarak promising to find a solution. Lengthy negotiations were then held with City's fan advisory board before Mubarak and Co agreed to lower prices. From next season, fans will be charged between £40 and £60 for Category A games, which involve the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal. There will be a further £5 reduction for Category B games and a £10 reduction for Category C fixtures. The cheapest tickets for Category A fixtures are down 43 per cent, with the most expensive down by 22 per cent. Man City are yet to release ticket prices for Champions League fixtures, although they are expected to come down as well. The news will come as a major boost for supporters, who have continued fighting to freeze ticket prices. City Matters, the club's fan advisory board, said in a statement on Friday: "We warmly welcome this announcement from the club, making matchday attendance more accessible and ensuring a vibrant atmosphere at the Etihad Stadium. "Through our dialogue with the club, the matchday pricing reductions, season ticket price freeze, release of new season tickets, and Flexi Gold season ticket fee adjustments highlight the value of fan voices through City Matters. "This announcement shows the club's commitment to City Matters and is a positive end to this season and our working relationship. "City Matters look forward to continued engagement and transparency with the club to achieve our shared ambition for Manchester City's success."
