Hundreds of bikes disappeared while in transit to L.A. County. Detectives say they cracked the case
Five men pulled off the theft of hundreds of bicycles, snatching them in a carefully orchestrated scheme while the bikes were in transit to L.A. County from a distributor, according to L.A. County sheriff's investigators.
Truck drivers were redirected, and box trucks and passenger vehicles were used to transport stolen cargo to waiting warehouses, according to detectives with the sheriff's Cargo Criminal Apprehension Team.
The bicycles were recovered and tied to a separate investigation that began April 21 when ARI Bikes of Utah reported to the sheriff's Compton Station the theft of 337 bicycles valued at about $1.7 million.
Working with the bike community and ARI, detectives identified multiple suspects and warehouse locations suspected of housing stolen goods.
Two multilocation search warrants were served. Detectives found 288 stolen bicycles along with other stolen merchandise. The five suspects were taken into custody, and investigators are continuing to examine 'their direct involvement in the ARI Bikes theft,' sheriff's officials said.
Those taken into custody were identified as Samvel Karapetyan, 38; Vazgen Avagyan 36; Narek Badalyan, 32; Vladimir Gyulankaryan, 32; and Davit Grigoryan, 40.
Detectives say they have observed growing sophistication in criminals diverting and intercepting valuable goods being trucked into and out of Southern California in recent years.
'The thieves have moved beyond breaking into trailers and are getting into the electronic delivery system,' sheriff's Capt. Calvin Mah told The Times.
Computers, high-end medications and other expensive products have become the key targets of cargo thefts, which can net millions of dollars.
Last month, Los Angeles police recovered nearly $4 million in stolen cargo in a case involving a South American crime ring that looted coffee, tequila, shoes, body wash, pet food and bitcoin-mining computers from tractor trailers and other locations.

As Ecuador battles gangs, lawmakers approve return of foreign military bases
Ecuador's parliament on Tuesday gave the green light for the establishment of foreign military bases in the country as it seeks international assistance in its battle against violent drug gangs. Foreign bases were outlawed in Ecuador in 2009, but President Daniel Noboa has vowed to bring them back as he pursues a crackdown on cartels blamed for turning what was once one of the region's most peaceful countries into one of its most violent. Noboa last year declared Ecuador to be in an internal armed conflict, empowering him to deploy the armed forces in the streets and prisons. But despite his tough-on-crime policies, Ecuador has the highest murder rate in Latin America. - 'Strategic cooperation ' - The United States had a military base in the South American country, at the fishing port of Manta, until 2009 when a constitutional prohibition entered into effect that Noboa wants overturned. With 82 votes out of 151 members, Ecuador's unicameral National Assembly with its pro-government majority on Tuesday approved a constitutional reform to allow for such bases to be brought back. "This is a decisive contribution to security... and for the return of peace to Ecuadoran territory," the parliament stated on X. In a separate statement, it said the reform had "the aim of strengthening international cooperation in the fight against transnational organized crime." The measure would allow for "the recovery of national security through strategic cooperation, intelligence sharing, and technology transfer, which will strengthen the operational capacities of the state," the congress added. The Constitutional Court must now review the text of the reform, which will then be submitted to a referendum. British man held over '£200k of meth' in suitcase
A British man has been arrested in Chile after custom officials claimed to have discovered £200k worth of crystal meth inside his suitcase. Sources in the South American country have confirmed the man to be William Eastment, from Milbourne Port in Somerset. He had been travelling from Mexico to Chile when, according to Chilean authorities, his suitcase was found to contain more than 5kg (11lbs) of methamphetamine. In a statement published online, customs officials said they had identified irregularities in one piece of luggage, prompting them to track down the owner. Rodrigo Díaz, Metropolitan Customs Regional Director, said: "Once the traveller retrieved the suspicious luggage from the airport baggage carousel, it was quickly identified by our officers and moved to the secondary screening area, where the drugs team confirmed the presence of a hidden object." Man faces felony murder charge after infant's death in Verona
AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – The Augusta County Sheriff reports a man has been charged with felony murder after an infant was found unresponsive in Verona on May 17. According to the sheriff, around 2:13 p.m. on Saturday, a call was received regarding an unresponsive and non-breathing infant at a home on Meade Park Circle. Emergency responders from Staunton Augusta Rescue Squad and Augusta County Fire and Rescue quickly responded to the scene and began emergency life-saving measures. The infant was successfully resuscitated and then taken to the hospital before being airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center for further advanced treatment. Blacksburg PD charge man with 100 counts in child porn investigation During a joint investigation, medical personnel, law enforcement, and Child Protective Services, it was allegedly determined that the infant 'sustained life-threatening injuries consistent with physical harm.' Investigators believe the infant was under the care of the father when the injuries occurred. The infant's remains were then taken to the Chief Medical Examiner in Manassas to determine the cause of May 20, the infant was pronounced dead at UVA Medical Center after being taken off life support. Later that same day, 25-year-old Blake Matthew Clark of Verona and father of the infant, was arrested by Augusta County Sheriff Deputies and charged with Felony Child Abuse and Neglect. On June 1, Clark was then charged with Felony Murder after additional information and evidence were allegedly is currently being held at the Middle River Regional Jail without Augusta County Sheriff said the investigation is ongoing and that additional charges may be pending.
