Mackenzie Hughes used an outdated but functional method to get Arnold Palmer exemption
ORLANDO – Rafael Campos wrote a heartfelt letter that netted him a sponsor's exemption into the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
What did Mackenzie Hughes do?
He made a phone call to Drew Donovan, the tournament director.
'I didn't plead my case but just said what it would mean to me and that I would help him in any way that I could help him for the tournament,' Hughes said. 'He said it's not commonplace to get calls like that. I've never requested an exemption before. I would've thought that's the only way to do it. It probably doesn't feel as genuine if it comes from an agent.'
Hughes finished No. 51 in the FedEx Cup standings and missed being exempt into all eight signature events by one spot. He was exempt into the first two signature events via finishing in the next 10 of the FedEx Cup Fall.
Hughes shot rounds of 73-70 in the first two rounds of the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill Lodge & Club.
The final group on Saturday will consist of Shane Lowry – solo lead at 8 under – and Wyndham Clark, who was absolved of any penalty after he took relief during his Friday round. Clark is two back, while Corey Conners and Collin Morikawa are tied for third at 5 under. Rory McIlroy is tied with Russell Henley and Jason Day for fifth at 4 under. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is tied with Hughes for 12th at 1 under.

Tyrone Hughes' 86-yard fumble recovery TD is the Saints Play of the Day
Tyrone Hughes' 86-yard fumble recovery TD is the Saints Play of the Day Our countdown to the start of the New Orleans Saints' 2025 season is down to 86 days, which makes this 86-yard fumble recovery by Tyrone Hughes the Saints Play of the Day. The Saints didn't win the day, or the battle, or the war, but we'll take it. Victories were few and far between in this long-running rivalry series with the San Francisco 49ers. Take wins when you can get them. Future Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Sam Mills stripped the ball for a fumble, and it was recovered by Hughes, who returned it 86 yards for a touchdown -- a great moment of redemption for him after Hughes fumbled a punt to set up an early San Francisco touchdown. Hughes faked out Steve Young so badly on the return that the Pro Bowl quarterback lost his footing and fell to the turf. You can see it here for yourself. This was a rare highlight during what was otherwise a miserable series with San Francisco. The Saints beat the 49ers back-to-back between two games in the 1990 and 1991 seasons, but then went 2-14 over the next 16 meetings from 1991 to 1999. So every opportunity to thumb their noses at 49ers faithful was meaningful to the Who Dat Nation. As for Hughes? The New Orleans native went down in the history books as one of the better playmakers in franchise history, initially for his skills in the return game (he led the league in kickoff return yards every year from 1994 to 1996) but also for his nose for the end zone. He twice scored touchdowns on fumble recoveries and found paydirt three more times on special teams, twice on punt returns and one on a 99-yard kick return. He gave Saints fans something to cheer for when those things were hard to come by.

What FSG think about Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes' SENSATIONAL Florian Wirtz offer
Liverpool are locked in talks with Bayer Leverkusen over the signing of playmaker Florian Wirtz. The 22-year-old is widely expected to become a new Liverpool player in the near future with negotiations ongoing over the exact structure of the fee. Leverkusen are reported to be holding out for a maximum value of £126m but Liverpool are not content to pay all of it. Advertisement That's why talks in recent days are said to have been conducted over additional payments - which will end up making up a percentage of the overall fee paid for Wirtz. The 2023/24 Bundesliga champions are already reported to have turned down TWO bids from Liverpool that fell short of the mark. That said, sporting director Richard Hughes and FSG CEO of Football Michael Edwards are still expected to walk away from this high-stakes poker game with the biggest prize. FSG BLOWN AWAY by Hughes and Edwards And in a new report from TBR Football it's been revealed what Hughes and Edwards' paymasters at Fenway Sports Group think about these negotiations. Advertisement FSG have RARELY splashed out like this at Liverpool - reserving the majority of their big spending for the Boston Red Sox. But club bosses are said to be DELIGHTED at how talks are progressing for Wirtz - who will become the most expensive-ever signing in English football history. 'I really can't explain just how happy Liverpool are behind the scenes with this deal. FSG, the club's owners, are blown away by the work of Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes – those two have put so much work into this move, not just this month but the lead-up to it also,' transfer expert Graeme Bailey said. © IMAGO - John Henry FSG Reds are flexing their muscle 'Liverpool are the Premier League's best on the field, and it's hard to argue they are the best off the field now too.' Advertisement Liverpool under Hughes have largely sat out the transfer windows up until now. They signed Federico Chiesa last summer and added Giorgi Mamardashvili while allowing him to stay on loan at Valencia. There were no signings, meanwhile, in the January window. Allied with sales including Sepp van den Berg and Fabio Carvalho, it gave Liverpool a significant budget heading into this summer. With Premier League-winning prize money, increased Champions League participation fees, new sponsorships secured, a new stand providing more matchday income and a fresh kit deal with Adidas, the future is certainly looking rosy for the Reds - who are about to flex their muscles in the market.

PGA Tour to hire NFL executive Brian Rolapp as CEO of business enterprise, AP source says
The PGA Tour is hiring longtime NFL executive Brian Rolapp as the first CEO of its new commercial division, created two years ago when tour reached a tentative agreement with the Saudi backers of LIV Golf, The Associated Press confirmed Thursday. Jay Monahan, who announced the framework agreement in June 2023, will stay on as commissioner of the PGA Tour. Monahan announced in December the search for a CEO of PGA Tour Enterprises, now backed by a $1.5 billion investment from Strategic Sports Group. The tour declined comment on the hiring, first reported by Sports Business Journal. A person with direct knowledge of the tour's plans confirmed the hiring, speaking on condition of anonymity because nothing has been announced. Such developments typically are not publicized during major championships. Rolapp has been with the NFL since 2003 and has been executive vice president and chief media and business officer since 2017, working closely with Commissioner Roger Goodell. Sports Business Journal obtained a memo Goodell sent to staff Thursday announcing Rolapp would be leaving to pursue other opportunities. Monahan announced an agreement with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, which was never finalized. From that framework agreement came a for-profit arm, PGA Tour Enterprises, which Rolapp would oversee. The tour brought on SSG in January 2024, and soon announced a first-of-its-kind equity plan for players. Monahan said in December of the CEO search, 'We're bringing new perspectives on to our team to help us realize the incredible opportunities ahead for our sport.' Meanwhile, negotiations with PIF to bring the world's best players together stalled in the spring, even with the involvement of President Donald Trump, as LIV Golf wants to keep its team concept in place. LIV Golf since has hired Scott O'Neil as its new CEO. Rolapp brings strong media connections to the PGA Tour which is starting to plan for new broadcast deals that run through 2030. The PGA Tour has seen a strong uptick this year through extensive feedback with its fans, including a recent decision to revamp the Tour Championship to crown its FedEx Cup champion. Arthur Blank, the Atlanta Falcons owner who is part of SSG, was part of the search committee that included Tiger Woods and Adam Scott, Monahan, PGA Tour board chairman Joe Gorder and Sam Kennedy from SSG. ___ AP golf: Doug Ferguson, The Associated Press Error in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data
