Shanghai Jury Chair Giuseppe Tornatore Says Picking Film Fest Winners 'Is Actually Very Simple'
Oscar-winner Giuseppe Tornatore, jury head of the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), says he will be looking for films that touch his heart as he chairs selection of this year's Golden Goblet Award winners. 'When I enter a film screening and close my eyes, I always return to the feeling of being an audience member,' Tornatore said Friday during the Shanghai jury's meeting with the international media. 'I always hope that the film will bring me a pleasant surprise every time I go to the cinema.'The Italian filmmaker is best known for his Academy Award-winner Cinema Paradiso (1988), a film in which a young boy is swept away by the magic of the movies — and the 69-year-old Tornatore said that was the feeling he would be chasing throughout SIFF's 10-day run. 'For us judges, actually choosing who will eventually win should be a simple matter. The movie that wins an award must be able to touch the depths of each judge's heart. Looking at it this way, this selection process is actually very simple.' Tornatore is joined on Shanghai's main jury by a trio of Chinese talent — director Yang Lina, actor-director Huang Bo and actress Yong Mei — alongside Argentinean filmmaker Iván Fund, Greek producer Thanassis Karathanos and Indian director Kiran Rao. The group's task is to choose from 12 wildly diverse international productions, which were shortlisted from a record 3,900 submissions, according to festival organizers. On the local front, Chinese director Wang Tong's ambitious genre-bender Wild Nights, Tamed Beasts, which mixes noir-tinged drama with social realism, generated some of the most vocal buzz this week during SIFF's pre-festival media preview screenings. The other Chinese features in the main competition are fest-favorite Cao Baoping's high-voltage comedy One Wacky Summer and Qiu Sheng's domestic drama My Father's Son. SIFF is keen to hype its role as a window into talents and trends emerging in Chinese cinema. The event is screening around 60 Chinese-language movies across its five competitions, including several world premieres and restored classics. For their part, the Golden Goblet jury is keen to dig in. 'I very happy that three Chinese films have been nominated this time, but of course, there are many other excellent films from all over the world that have been nominated, too,' said Huang. 'This diversity actually ensures that the final outcome is very honest. It's like if we all drank the same drink. Some would like spicy, sweet, salty or slightly bitter flavors. This kind of balance is really important. It ensures a certain level of objectivity that makes everyone feel more rational.' There's also early buzz surrounding Swiss director Nicolas Steiner's hypnotic dive into magical realism, You Believe in Angels, Mr. Drowak? (Germany, Switzerland); Poland's tension-packed theater-based drama Loss of Balance (Korek Bojanowski); and Portuguese director António Ferreira's The Scent of Things Remembered (Portugal-Brazil), which stars the impressive José Martins as a former soldier forced to confront his demons. Rounding out the selection is the Chile/U.K./France co-production After the Fog from British-German filmmaker Miriam Heard, Black Red Yellow (Kyrgyzstan) from Aktan Arym Kubat, Flavia Castro's Cyclone (Brazil), Luisa from Germany's Julia Roesler, Japan's On Summer Sand by Shinya Tamada, and the Argentina/Spain/Chile co-production The Reborn from Santiago Esteves. 'I think the films that are on offer are clearly some of the best films made this year in the world,' added Rao at Friday's presser. 'So we really will have, I'm sure, a lot to discuss and a difficult choice to make — but there's a feast for us to watch and enjoy.' Cillian Murphy Is Amazing In 28 Days Later, But I Was Shook By The A-Listers Who Originally Vied For The Role

I'm still amazed that director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland have reassembled to deliver a new tale of terror to the 2025 movie schedule in 28 Years Later. The occasion has left me also thinking about 28 Days Later a lot, a film that would eventually become known as Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy's star-making performance. But while the Oppenheimer lead has always been pitch perfect in the role of Jim, there's a long existing list of names that have been rumored to be up for the part back in the day. And when I say names, I truly mean 'names,' like Leonardo DiCaprio, Ryan Gosling and frequent Boyle collaborator Ewan McGregor. When the opportunity to watch the first 28 minutes of 28 Years Later was paired with an in-person interview with its intrepid director, I had to try and weed out fact from fiction, which saw all three names debunked in the process. However, that's when Danny Boyle gave CinemaBlend two names I never expected to be in the mix: I'll tell you who did audition for Jim. … Tom Hardy and Orlando Bloom, because they'd all finished either drama school or Black Hawk Down. … We didn't have very much money, we thought 'We'll never be able to afford a bigger actor.' And we wanted newbies who just didn't know which way it would break with them. So the trio of Leonardo DiCaprio, Ryan Gosling and Ewan McGregor were never going to even make the list for 28 Days Later's casting. With that being said, I'm very surprised that Tom Hardy and Orlando Bloom hadn't been reported more often - especially at that point in their careers. Although coincidentally enough, McGregor was in Black Hawk Down himself, as well as entrenched in the Star Wars prequel trilogy at the time. Likewise, by the time Danny Boyle's film was making the rounds in its initial 2002 release in the UK, Hardy and Bloom were going head to head at the box office thanks to their respective roles in Star Trek: Nemesis and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Honestly, either man would have been a distraction to the tense, harrowing journey 28 Days Later took, as audiences would know they'd survive the ride. The whole point of the third act is that by time Jim's on his rampage through Major West's estate, you're supposed to wonder if he's an Infected at that point. While we now know that wasn't the case, and with Cillian Murphy set to return for 28 Years Later's sequel The Bone Temple, that point tends to get a bit lost. However, Danny Boyle's perspective seemed to see him pick between two finalists, with the Christopher Nolan vet winning out in the end. At least, that's what it sounded like when the 28 Years Later mastermind shared this with CinemaBlend: And I remember seeing [them], and we saw Cillian, and I remember thinking, 'Whoa, he'll have an amazing career.' I remember thinking that. I was right. I remember thinking that about Orlando Bloom, I thought 'He'll do all right. ' The rest, as they say, is history. 2003's US release lit a fuse that saw both Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris both launch into higher profile roles, and Danny Boyle and Alex Garland being heralded as the men who reanimated the zombie (and zombie-adjacent) subgenre. Seeing as Stephen King bought out showings of 28 Days Later just so he could give them out to spread the word, that was clearly the right choice. And as Danny Boyle himself suggested, Orlando Bloom and Tom Hardy did 'do alright' in the end. Let's hope that 28 Years Later renews its franchise's King Seal of Approval, when it opens in theaters on June 20th.

Opening night for a festival celebrating a Polish delicacy
EDWARDSVILLE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A traditional Polish dish becomes the star of the weekend in one Luzerne County community. It's a summertime staple in NEPA, and 28/22's Rachel Malak stopped by to get a taste of all the excitement. Crowded streets and buttered pierogis, that's exactly what you'll get in Edwardsville, at the hometown committee's 11th Pierogi Festival. 'I was supposed to get these all to-go, but I think I'm just gonna eat them all right now,' emphasized Cody Welgosh, Wilkes-Barre Township. While many people can't wait to indulge, organizers like Jackie Moran have work hard before the reward pays off. 'Once we hit the new year, we really kick it into high gear,' expressed Moran. For others like Pete Vattimo, who designs the pierogi cutouts, the magic happens in the eleventh hour. 'I delay and just postpone that until I panic, and then I come up with a design, and I work for like two weeks straight to get it done, and then we're good,' said Vattimo. Either way, the lead-up to pierogi fest is crunch time, or should we say, pinch time! And it certainly works up an appetite. For new vendors, like Poppy Ski's: 'Thin dough, amazing filling. Ah, just your traditional potato, cheese, and onion. Everything you want in a pierogi,' explained Laura Gronski, owner, Poppy Ski's Pierogi. To old favorites like TNT's Pierogi Plus, who are debuting their brand new 'Polish kabob' this year. Each June, the Edwardsville Pierogi Festival butters up the community and keeps everyone coming back. Some for the Oh-So-NEPA merch: 'It started with, like, making t-shirts, and then every year, we go through revisions, and then getting into 3D printed stuff,' said Ryan Klug, pierogi enthusiast. Some for the live entertainment and plenty for the school's-out summertime fun! We'll leave you with some advice: 'Come hungry.
