Gilbert Arenas Goes Off on the Tesla Cybertruck Following His Son's Near-Fatal Accident

Yahoo21-05-2025

Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas speaking out about his son's scary car accident back in April. And now he's revealing exactly what happened to cause the fiery scene in the first place.
As we previously told you, Arenas' son Alijah ran over a fire hydrant and crashed into a tree in a Los Angeles neighborhood back at the end of April. The scary video was captured by a neighbor which showed the Tesla Cybertruck he engulfed in flames while the fire hydrant spewed water around it. Alijah himself could be seen being removed from the car shirtless and shoeless before being rushed to the hospital.
As a health and safety protocol for smoke inhalation, they put the younger Arenas into a medically induced coma for about 24 hours before waking up and beginning his recovery journey.
Now, in a new interview on the 'All the Smoke' podcast hosted by fellow former NBA stars Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes on Monday, the elder Arenas assured his listeners that his son was doing much better and healing day by day. In a surprising move, he also revealed the cause behind his son's nearly fatal accident.
'The car malfunctioned on him. The steering wheel went limp and rammed right into a tree,' he said before revealing his son couldn't break the window open to escape the car because it was bulletproof.
'People are like, 'Oh, he fell asleep.' I'm looking at him. He's on the phone. He's on the phone with 911, I'm trying to get that call, he was on the phone with them for 10 minutes. So I know he was, at least, in the car for 10 minutes,' Arenas explained.
He went on to suggest that parents ought to let them have a hammer in the car or something so that their kids can get break out if they need to.
'He said he was trying to kick the window in, but couldn't,' the elder Arenas said.
Later, Arenas said he emphasized the importance of his son seeing all the well wishes and flowers sent his way while he was in his coma and said he was lucky to even be a witness to it all after what he went through.

Electric Truck Battery Demand Increased More Than 70% Last Year, Future Is Uncertain

The latest car news, reviews, and features. Electric trucks aren't all that green, aren't that practical, and aren't cheap. Still, a market exists for pickups like the Ford F-150 Lightning, and it grew big time last year. The International Energy Agency reports that in 2024, the demand for electric truck batteries grew by more than 70% compared to 2023. That trend might not continue. IEA data shows that in 2023, electric truck battery demand sat at 14 gigawatt-hours; it was up to 24 gigawatt-hours in 2024. That data mostly tracks with the sales figures of top EV pickups like the aforementioned F-150 Lightning, which leapt from 24,165 units sold in 2023 to 33,510 last year—a roughly 39% increase. The Blue Oval alone doesn't make up the difference, but you also have to factor in new vehicles that either went on sale late in 2023 or early in 2024. Undeniably, the biggest influence was is the Tesla Cybertruck, with approximately 39,000 registrations in its first full sales year. Vehicle sales are a key factor in overall battery demand, though they aren't all that matters. Battery capacity is crucial, and it also varies greatly across the board. While a Tesla Cybertruck can be had with a 123-kilowatt-hour battery pack, the Chevy Silverado EV can be packaged with a 200-kWh pack. It doesn't take as many Silverado EVs to equal the same battery demand as a parking lot full of Cybertrucks. Electric pickup sales are already sliding in 2025. The Cybertruck is pacing for fewer than 30,000 sales this year based on first-quarter figures, and while the F-150 Lightning leads it slightly, it doesn't look likely to exceed last year's performance. The Silverado EV and its GMC Sierra EV twins are climbing, though not at a great enough pace to offset the fall of other models. Other categories of EV battery demand were on the rise in 2024, too, including a big leap for light-duty vehicles. That alone isn't surprising, considering smaller passenger EVs are the biggest relevant market by far, but the jump from 713 gWh in 2023 to 884 gWh last year represents a 24% increase. It's a reminder that electric trucks are but a small piece of the larger EV pie, and that seems likely to be the case again in 2025. Got a tip or question for the author? 2025's Most Reliable New German Car Is Also a Performance Icon

German engineering is often praised for its precision and performance, but not every car from the region lives up to long-term reliability expectations. In 2025, however, one iconic model defies the trend, delivering not just exhilarating performance, but rock-solid dependability. This high-performance sports car has earned its reputation through decades of refinement, blending speed, balance, and everyday usability. It's a rare kind of machine that feels equally at home on a racetrack or during a relaxed highway cruise. More impressively, it manages to deliver this thrill while maintaining excellent reliability scores year after year. If you're looking for a luxury performance car that won't leave you worrying about repair bills or breakdowns, this model stands tall among its peers. It's proof that you can have legendary performance and daily-driver dependability in one package. In 2025, no other new German car strikes that balance quite as well. In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from various manufacturer websites and other authoritative sources, including TopSpeed, the EPA, J.D. Power, RepairPal, and the EPA. Germany is renowned for producing some of the most mechanically impressive cars in the world. However, brands from the nation haven't always had the best reputation when it comes to reliability. Despite being performance-oriented, Porsche stands out by having a lineup of sturdy cars, with the 911 ranking the highest. J.D. Power is a site that collates data submitted from verified owners to rank cars in a number of different categories. The 911 ranks incredibly highly, with an 87 out of 100 overall. The main thing that lets it down is its resale. Its reliability, however, helps carry it, with it scoring a whopping 89 out of 100 for quality and reliability. This means it isn't just the most reliable German car, but it is also one of the most reliable cars you can buy overall. The 911, and the 992, especially, is the perfect daily driver- beautiful styling, enormous power, and reliability. It's a good thing that the 911 is considered to be such a reliable car because the maintenance costs are extreme. If things do go wrong, you'll end up spending a small fortune on repairs. RepairPal estimates that you'll spend $1,072 annually to maintain Porsche's extreme sports car. The most common problems reported by owners are oil and coolant leaks. Porsche does at least cover your first scheduled maintenance visit on the house. In terms of recalls, one has been issued for the 2025 Porsche 911, having to do with a software error causing low beams to create a glare for oncoming traffic. Porsche doesn't just hold the top spot when it comes to reliability, but they actually appear in the top five three times. This proves that their ability to build sturdy cars extends beyond a single model, and that when you buy from the prestigious brand you can expect high levels of quality. Close behind them, though, is BMW with the X3 and the X4. These models are among the automaker's most popular models and are mechanically similar to one another. They showcase that BMW has come a long way when it comes to reliability, ranking among the top automakers in the world. Porsche's penchant for crafting works of art is something that is well respected throughout the automotive industry. The fact that they produce such reliable vehicles is just another marker of their success. All of this comes at a cost, though, with every model of iconic sports car featuring a steep price tag. There are a plethora of different 911 models to choose from. We've even excluded the high-performance 911 Turbo and track-focused GT3 from the above. Essentially, there are three body types to choose from: the coupe, the drop-top cabriolet, and the Targa, which allows you to remove the roof panel above the front seats while keeping those in the back covered. Each body type has a number of different performance variations as well. Choosing which 911 to buy is an incredibly personal choice, with each model having its individual pros and cons. The base model is an easy option for those looking to get good bang for their buck, with the Carrera T being the choice for enthusiasts. We'd go for the GTS, though, which comes standard with the incredible T-Hybrid powertrain. Last year, Porsche made a number of really large changes to the 911. This included a shuffling of powertrains, extensive exterior updates, and the introduction of a fully-digital instrument panel. The Carrera T was also brought back, which is essentially a lightweight trim with a standard six-speed manual. For 2026, changes are smaller. The infotainment system has been updated with new features. Dolby Atmos was also added to improve the already impressive Bose and Burmester sound systems on offer. The system has also been streamlined, meaning its more responsive. It is impressive that such a performance-oriented machine is considered to be the most reliable new German car you can buy right now. Even more impressive is that, regardless of which model you go for, you know that you're getting a sports car that is tuned for maximum levels of enjoyment, all while being comfortable enough to drive every day. The base Carrera gets the three-liter flat-six that produces 388 horses. The T uses the same powertrain but can be equipped with a manual transmission. The Carrera S produces more power from the three-liter engine, but only comes with the PDK. The T-Hybrid GTS gets a 3.6-liter flat-six that gets help from a powerful single electric motor. Regardless of which model you opt for, the 911 is sports car perfection. It is quick, agile, and responsive. Every move you make translates to the road. The PDK is brilliant and those that like a more engaging feel will enjoy the manual in the Carrera T. When not being driven hard, the 911 seamlessly converts into a comfortable cruiser, gliding along and absorbing bumps in the road with ease. Automatic emergency braking LED headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System Adaptive Cruise Control Lane Keep Assist with Traffic Sign Recognition ParkAssist with Active Parking Support Porsche only offers the most basic safety and driver assists standard on the 911. The biggest criticism we have of this car is that tons of features that should be included are locked behind paywalls. That being said, some impressive tech is on offer, including a headlight system that adapts to other cars on the road, your steering inputs, and curves in the road. Semi-autonomous driving is on offer through the advanced adaptive cruise control system.

Auto review: Driving alfresco in the 2026 Aston Martin Vantage Roadster

In a world where car design is increasingly held hostage by angry, dissonant design language, Aston Martin is an abiding reminder that the finest cars are timelessly beautiful, exquisitely crafted and intelligently engineered. The thought occurred as I approached this week's test car, a 2026 Aston Martin Vantage Roadster sheathed in carbon-fiber body panels painted California Sage, a shade-shifting green that shimmers like the automotive track star that it is, its hue changing with the light as you stole around it. Certainly, it's dressed to thrill, with bulging rear fenders and a soft shoulder mid-body, much like an old 911. Its handsome, distinct face has a noticeably larger grille, which aids cooling. The rear-end diffuser may denote sportiness, but it's visually louder than the rest of the car. However, the quad exhaust tips are beautifully integrated. With the top up, the Roadster resembles the Coupe. Top down, it's stowed beneath the sleek rear deck. Now, the Aston Martin faithful may wonder why this speed buggy is called the Roadster, and not a Volante, Aston's name for its droptops. Evidently that appellation is reserved for Aston's GT cars, which the Vantage is decidedly not. It's a sports car, one that delivers maximum thrills in a minimally sized package. The 2026 Aston Martin Vantage Roadster is the follow-up to the Vantage Coupe that debuted last year. Thanks to some body structure and driveline tweaks, the Roadster weighs a mere 132 pounds more and is no slower than its Coupe sibling. Its twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 produces 656 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque through a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. It's fast, with its Michelin Pilot Sport 5.5 tires providing a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds and a 202-mph top speed. Just as fast is the eight-ply fabric roof, which drops in 6.8 seconds at speeds of up to 31 mph. The driveline is fitted with Sport, Sport+, Track, Individual and Wet driving modes, but no Eco mode - thank God. As you might expect, it uses premium fuel and returns an EPA-rated 18 mpg in combined city/highway driving. Even though its exhaust note exhibits signals that it's ready for a raucous time, this is a sports car for gentlemen and gentlewomen. The driveline makes a sporting sound, but it's never overbearing, while the engine and transmission prove very responsive, remaining in gear longer than most rivals - especially in manual mode, where it indulges need to the gear and listen to it emote. And it plays the automotive athlete, unequal-length double wishbones up front; a multi-link suspension out back and Bilstein DTX adaptive dampers at each corner. Despite the slew of electronic driving aids, this remains an unrepentant front-engine/rear-wheel-drive roadster. Able to dance with an ease of control that makes it one fine party animal, the steering and brakes communicate to the driver as its taut handling voraciously gobbles up asphalt accompanied by a refined rumble. Driver and passenger are ensconced in a snug cabin for two that's beautifully finished, its carbon-fiber trim colored identically to the exterior color. Its center console features a 10.25-inch capacitive touchscreen with a user interface designed in house. And bravo to the designers, who have not insisted that all controls be banished to the touchscreen. They believe, and rightly so, that certain controls are better as physical buttons while driving at speed. As a result, finding the control you want is simple. It's accompanied by a 390-watt, 11-speaker audio system or an optional 15-speaker, double amplified, 1,170-watt Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system. That said, the Aston's cylinder symphony is the only music I listened to. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard. Any quibbles? Well, the car's beltline is very high, which may be a turn-off for some. And, being a sports car, its boot measures a modest 7 cubic feet. Neither should dissuade you from acquiring this lovely bit of rapid transit. Aston Martin remains a survivor, and the 2026 Vantage Roadster is proof of the company's value. Having survived bankruptcy seven times in its 112-year history, it's arguably never been better. Credit the money and guidance of Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll, who has masterfully restored Aston Martin to the top of the automotive pantheon with cars that are among the rarest and finest in the world. The Vantage Roadster's performance, quality and scarcity define the essence of a true luxury sports car. 2026 Aston Martin Vantage Roadster Base price: $205,900 (estimated) Engine: Twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 Horsepower/Torque: 656/590 pound-feet EPA rating (combined city/highway): 18 mpg Fuel required: Premium unleaded Length/Width/Height: 177/81/51 inches Ground clearance: 3.7 inches Cargo capacity: 7 cubic feet Towing capacity: Not rated Copyright (C) 2025, Tribune Content Agency, LLC.
