Google's Play Store App Deletion—What You Do Now On Your Phone
More than a million apps are now gone.

Google's mission to clean up Play Store has gone further than expected. Coming just days after a new report highlighted an alarming escalation in threats targeting mobile phones, we have confirmation of the sheer scale of changes from Google.
Last year, the Android-maker announced it was raising the bar for apps to get into its store — and even for apps to stay on its store. The change was presented as a quality threshold, with apps failing to deliver the right levels of performance, usability, reliability and even usefulness risking the cull.
This quality mark is unarguably important, and Play Store's yellow warning labels target the same problem. But many low-quality apps are also high-risk apps, empty vessels used to hide malicious intent. They may not contain malware themselves, but such apps can direct users into dangerous territory once installed.
Now we have a sense of the scale of this. 'From the start of 2024 to the present,' TechCrunch reports, citing data from Appfigures, 'the Android app marketplace went from hosting about 3.4 million apps worldwide to just around 1.8 million… That's a decline of about 47%.' At the same time, the number of apps on Apple's App Store increased, meaning this 'is not part of some larger global trend.'
Play Store's deleted apps
Google
Google warned last year that the type of apps it would find and delete include those 'that are static without app-specific functionalities, for example, text only or PDF file apps, apps with very little content that do not provide an engaging user experience, for example, single wallpaper apps, and apps that are designed to do nothing or have no function.' Clearly, there were thousands upon thousands of such apps.
This latest news comes with a new warning for users. If an app is one of those deleted, Google says 'the app will no longer be available to download on Google Play [but]
And critically, 'the app will not be removed from your device. You can continue to use the app. However, you will not be able to update your app. If you remove the app from your device, you will not be able to redownload the app unless the developer is able to republish it to Google Play.' That means low-quality and potentially high risk apps remain on your phone and it's for you to deal with. It also means that even if an app is not dangerous by intent, any security issues cannot be fixed by the developer.
The advice is simple. If you notice apps that can no longer update and find they're no longer on the store, then delete them on your device as well. Users now run an average of 80-100 apps on their phones, and if those apps have been cut loose by the OS you're running an unnecessary risk. The good news is any subscriptions associated with those apps will stop, as will their ability to link to Google's billing systems.

Google clears the air on Gemini email, says 'this update is good for users'
Adamya Sharma / Android Authority TL;DR In a statement to Android Authority, Google explained what its email about upcoming Gemini changes on Android devices really meant. It turns out that it's a positive change for users, despite initial confusion due to the wording in the email. Check out some Gemini tips below if you still want tighter control over your data Google has clarified what Gemini's upcoming July 7 update for Android devices really means and how it'll affect Android users. The company responded to an email query from Android Authority, confirming that Gemini will soon be able to help with everyday tasks like sending messages, making phone calls, and setting timers, even if Gemini Apps Activity is turned off. This initially sparked confusion after Google sent out a vague email to users, stating that Gemini would soon be able to 'help you use Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and Utilities on your phone, whether your Gemini Apps Activity is on or off.' Understandably, the lack of specifics raised concerns. Would the AI gain access to private data or system functions even when activity tracking was disabled? Here's what Google told us: This update is good for users: they can now use Gemini to complete daily tasks on their mobile devices like send messages, initiate phone calls, and set timers while Gemini Apps Activity is turned off. With Gemini Apps Activity turned off, their Gemini chats are not being reviewed or used to improve our AI models. As always, users can turn off Gemini's connection to apps at any time by navigating to What this means is that starting July 7, Gemini will act more like a personal assistant, even with the App Activity option disabled. Currently, if your Gemini App Activity is switched off, connected apps, like Phone, WhatsApp, Messages, and others, are also disabled. With the upcoming change, you can keep Gemini App Activity turned off and still use the AI to interact with your Phone, Messages, and WhatsApp, without your interactions being logged or used to improve AI models. That's a relief, but if you still want tighter control over your data, here's how you can make your Gemini usage more secure. Gemini App Activity Settings page What You Can Currently Control When Gemini App Activity is Switched On What You See Currently When Gemini App Activity is Switched Off Turn off Gemini Apps Activity: You can turn off Gemini App Activity by heading to the Gemini app. In the app, tap your profile > Gemini Apps Activity > toggle off. You can also switch it off by navigating here. Remember, your chats are saved in your account for up to 72 hours, whether Gemini Apps activity is on or off. Limit Gemini's access to core apps: With the upcoming change, Gemini will have access to apps like WhatsApp or Messages to function fully. In its initial email, Google didn't clearly explain how to disable access to these integrations, but you can revoke access by heading to the Gemini app > your profile > Apps. Here, you'll find options to revoke app permissions for Phone, WhatsApp, and Messages. That said, when you disable this access, you won't be able to as Gemini to make calls or send messages Be careful about what you share: This is an obvious piece of advice, but Google's help docs confirm that your Gemini conversations may still be reviewed by humans, especially if activity tracking is on. Avoid sharing private documents, passwords, or personal identifiers in chats with Gemini.

Veteran analyst drops bold new call on Nvidia stock
Veteran analyst drops bold new call on Nvidia stock originally appeared on TheStreet. You can't talk about artificial intelligence without running into Nvidia () . It's wild how a gaming chipmaker is now basically the face that runs the show in AI. 💵💰💰💵 From data centers to cloud platforms, and from edge devices to the conversations shaping the future of tech, it's Nvidia all the way. Nvidia's ubiquitous GPUs are at the heart of training large language models (LLMs) and accelerating robotics, dominating the most mission-critical chips on the planet. Trillions in market cap later, Nvidia is still getting the love from Wall Street. Sure, Nvidia stock has wobbled, but a new forecast suggests there's still a ton of firepower ahead. Nvidia has effectively become the engine room of the AI frenzy. Its GPUs run roughly 90% of the world's AI data centers, and tech giants including Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Meta continue gravitating to its silicon architectures. Moreover, its competitive edge in AI goes beyond chips. Its powerful CUDA platform, for instance, is arguably the backbone of AI software, locking in millions of developers looking to optimize their work for Nvidia chips. On the model side, tools such as TensorRT and NeMo help developers run AI systems easily and efficiently. Also, for businesses looking to avoid building massive infrastructure, Nvidia offers DGX Cloud, fully loaded AI clusters you can rent on AI powerhouse like CoreWeave helps run it, with analysts predicting it could be a $10 billion long-term revenue stream. Hence, this end-to-end stack allows Nvidia to dominate the AI value chain. It's also why hyperscalers shell out a ton of money on their Nvidia budgets, knowing an alternative path would fracture their entire pipeline. So it's no surprise that Nvidia stock has gone parabolic over the past few years. For context, its share price surged from $24 at the end of January 2022 to about $134.27 by December 31, 2024, an astonishing 449% gain. This breakneck surge mirrors the explosive growth of its AI-led data-center business. In the fourth quarter of FY 2022, its data center sales were at $3.3 billion. By Q4 FY 2024, though, it stood at an eye-popping $18.4 billion — a 458% jump in just a couple of years. And as we look ahead, it seems the AI buildout is just getting started. McKinsey sees global AI and data-center investment hitting $5.2 trillion by 2030, on the back of a double-digit bump in AI-ready Q1 2025 alone, cloud infrastructure spending hit $90.9 billion, up 21% year-over-year, according to Canalys. Nvidia hogged the spotlight Wednesday after Loop Capital jacked up its price target in a big way. In setting a new Wall Street high for Nvidia, Loop Capital analyst Ananda Baruah raised his price target to $250 from $175. He feels hyperscaler and AI spending could hit $2 trillion by 2028, with Nvidia riding that wave to a $6 trillion market cap. More Tech Stock News: OpenAI's Altman slams Mark Zuckerberg, ignites drama Wall Street rallies behind Marvell Technology stock after blockbuster AI showcase Struggling EV semiconductor company files for bankruptcy He added that Nvidia owns 'critical tech' and has the pricing power to match, as hyperscaler continues to grow over time. Loop Capital's new $250 target is nothing short of extraordinary. When stacked against Wall Street's $172.60 consensus target, that implies a roughly 44% premium, towering even higher than the current 'high' estimate of $220. So far this year, Nvidia stock has quietly gained nearly 10%, starting the year in the high $130s and climbing to the low $150s by late June. It has continued to crush expectations in its data-center division, with more than 70% year-over-year growth in Q1, while next-gen chip pre-orders pile up. Add in software momentum, and analysts say there is still plenty of upside remaining in this AI analyst drops bold new call on Nvidia stock first appeared on TheStreet on Jun 26, 2025 This story was originally reported by TheStreet on Jun 26, 2025, where it first appeared.
