Novak Djokovic finally won a match on clay this season, beating Marton Fucsovics 6-2, 6-3 in the second round of the rainy Geneva Open on Wednesday.
Djokovic lost his two previous matches on clay in the European spring season, and his next opponent at the last warmup event for the French Open is one of those players who already beat him.
In the quarterfinals scheduled Thursday, the second-seeded Djokovic will play Matteo Arnaldi who earlier advanced past Fabian Marozsan 6-3, 7-6 (3). Arnaldi beat Djokovic in two sets at the Madrid Masters.
'My first win this season on clay obviously, it's great to break the ice in a way. It's a very demanding surface,' Djokovic said in an on-court interview.
He faced no break-point chances, landed 73% of his first serves and clinched with a backhand winner on his second match-point chance,
'It helps if you have a good serve and today I think that was my strongest shot,' Djokovic said.
The 24-time Grand Slam singles champion is seeking his 100th career title on the ATP Tour.

J J Spaun weathers the worst of wet Oakmont to win U.S. Open

J.J. Spaun celebrates making a birdie putt on the 18th hole during the final round of the U.S. Open golf tournament at Oakmont Country Club Sunday, June 15, 2025, in Oakmont, Pa. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar) golf By DOUG FERGUSON J.J. Spaun turned a sloppy mess of a U.S. Open at wet and nasty Oakmont into a thing of beauty at the end Sunday with two stunning shots that carried him to his first major championship. First came his driver on the 314-yard 17th hole onto the green for a birdie that gave him the lead. Needing two putts from 65 feet on the 18th to win, he finished this storybook week by holing the longest putt all week for birdie and a 2-over 72. That made him the only player to finish under par at 1-under 279. It gave him a two-shot victory over Robert MacIntyre of Scotland. And it made Spaun, the 36-year-old Californian who resembles the late Pittsburgh Steelers great Franco Harris, a major champion in only his second U.S. Open. The rain that put Oakmont on the edge of being unplayable might have saved Spaun. One shot behind at the start of the day, he opened with five bogeys in six holes. And then came a rain delay of 1 hour, 37 minutes. Spaun recovered as so many others fell apart. © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Ohtani could make mound return in June, Sasaki appears likely to be sidelined for lengthy stretch

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Shohei Ohtani could return to a major league mound in the next two weeks but Los Angeles Dodgers rookie right-hander Roki Sasaki has paused his throwing program and is set for a lengthy layoff. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Ohtani will throw to hitters for a fourth time this week and "potentially" it could be the two-way star's final batting practice session before his first big league pitching appearance since Aug. 23, 2023, for the Los Angeles Angels. "He's getting very eager, very excited," Roberts said. "And I think there's a point where, in kind of hearing from Shohei, that the effort it takes to throw live BP and then to play a game, (that we'd rather) use those bullets in a game." A three-time MVP, Ohtani entered Sunday's game with a .290 average, an NL-leading 1.023 OPS and 25 homers. With Sasaki (right shoulder impingement), Blake Snell (left shoulder inflammation) and Tyler Glasnow (right shoulder inflammation) on the injured list, the Dodgers have resorted to bullpen games. "I think the thought is that, given where we're at right now, anything he can give us (on the mound) is additive," Roberts said of Ohtani, "even if it's an inning or two innings on the front end" Sasaki has not pitched in a game since May 9 and is not part of the team's long-term pitching plans this season. "I think that's what the mindset should be," Roberts said. Being thrust into this environment certainly was a big undertaking for him, and now you layer in the health part and the fact he's a starting pitcher, knowing what the build-up (required to return) entails -- I think that's the prudent way to go about it." Sasaki, 23, went 1-1 with a 4.72 ERA in eight starts after joining the Dodgers from the Pacific League's Chuba Lotte Marines, ,averaging less than 4 1/3 innings per start. His walked 22 and struck out 24 in 34 1/3 innings and his fastball averaged 95.7 mph, down 3-4 mph from his average in Japan. Roberts said Sasaki was pain-free when he resumed throwing in early June, but the pitcher was shut down after feeling discomfort this past week. Sasaki recently received a cortisone injection in the shoulder; Roberts said no further scans are planned. "I don't think it's pain," Roberts said. "I don't know if it's discomfort, if it's tightness, if he's just not feeling strong, whatever the adjective you want to use. That's more of a question for Roki, as far as the sensation he's feeling. "He's just not feeling like he can ramp it up, and we're not going to push him to do something he doesn't feel good about right now.

The three-time MVP added another solo shot in the sixth for his third multi-homer game of the season and the 22nd of his career. The 37-year-old Kershaw (2-0) gave a vintage performance in the sixth and best start of his 18th major league season. The lefty needed just 81 pitches to finish seven innings. Casey Schmitt hit a grand slam in his second straight game for San Francisco, connecting off Dodgers utilityman Kiké Hernández during the Giants' five-run ninth inning. Anthony Banda had to come on to get the final out. Mookie Betts had a two-run double during a five-run second inning for the Dodgers, who rebounded after the Giants pulled even with Los Angeles atop the NL West standings Friday night with a 6-2 victory. Landen Roupp (4-5) gave up six runs on four hits and five walks while failing to escape the second inning in the shortest start of his career.
