Cannes 2025: A Pale View of Hills movie review – Suzu Hirose, Fumi Nikaido lead adaptation

3.5/5 stars
Towards the end of Kei Ishikawa's visually captivating new film A Pale View of Hills, Niki (Camilla Aiko) tells her mother, Etsuko (Yoh Yoshida), she shouldn't feel guilty about leaving Japan for Britain after the second world war. 'We all need to change,' she says.
For Etsuko, that comment rings very true: trapped by both the trauma of war and the tyranny of patriarchy, reinvention was perhaps Etsuko's only option to attain a more rewarding life.
But some of Ishikawa's changes to the 1982 novel on which his film is based, by Nobel Prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro – in which a middle-aged Japanese woman offers her daughter a montage of memories about her life as a meek homemaker in Japan in the 1950s – may come across as unnecessary.

By amplifying the book's much more muted social commentary – a move encouraged by Ishiguro himself, who helped develop the screenplay and also serves as the executive producer of the film – Ishikawa somehow shifts the focus away from the protagonist's personal struggles.
He also waters down the intrigue which keeps Niki – and the audience – guessing about the truthfulness of Etsuko's recollections of her past.

Ex-girlfriend who blackmailed K-pop idol with sex video gets suspended sentence

The former girlfriend of a 26-year-old South Korean pop star has been given a one-year suspended sentence for threatening to release a sex video of them together in a bid to end his career. The Seoul Eastern District Court sentenced the woman to one year in prison, suspended for two years, for her threats to the K-pop singer, who is still active in the scene. She was sentenced under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes (coercion using video recordings) and for property damage, according to legal platform LawTalk News on Wednesday. The woman was also ordered to complete 40 hours of sexual violence counselling and barred from working at institutions involving children, teenagers and people with disabilities for four years. The woman had escalated threats to the singer and also damaged his phone during an argument. As the relationship started deteriorating, the woman began blackmailing her boyfriend with sex videos filmed during their time together. Her first threat was on December 10, 2021, when she created a social media account using the singer's image and texted him the link along with a portion of a sex video involving the two, saying: 'Quit being an idol. The only path left for you is the military.'

What is an ‘ita bag'? Plus the most popular toys, dolls and figures now

The 'Ita bag' hashtag went viral on Weibo – China's answer to X – in summer 2024 when Quan Hongchan, who won two golds in diving at the 2024 Paris Olympics, showed off gifts given to her by fans, from badges to cute toys, inside her transparent PVC bag. Advertisement An ita bag, which means 'painful bag' in Japanese, humorously denotes the great pain – and expense and effort – the wearer has put into lavishly decorating their bag. The bag is usually made of canvas or nylon with a clear see-through front. The trend stems from Japan's otaku subculture, which is defined by obsessive fans of interests such as video games, anime and manga. So invested were otaku in their interests that they would go through great lengths to seek out merchandise from their favourite titles or franchises and carry them inside a personalised bag. This manifestation of love and obsession soon caught on among trendsetters and the ita bag became an essential fashion accessory for people attending concerts and conventions. While keychains, badges and buttons remain popular choices for decorating an ita bag, there is now also an array of more elaborate items that can turn a PVC bag into a mobile shop window.
