Police warn of con artists exploiting SAPS identity to scam public
Scammers are using fake SAPS details to trick the public into sharing personal information.
Police are warning members of the public of a scam involving fraudulent letters and phone calls that falsely appear to originate from the SAPS.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, the scammers often distribute fake documents on social media apps.
'These fake letters, often distributed via WhatsApp, bear the SAPS logo and contain the names, contact details of senior SAPS officers, and the addresses of legitimate SAPS offices.'
She said that in some instances, the scammers also use the names of police stations that do not exist.
'The scammers use this information to deceive recipients into sharing personal details under false pretences,' she said.
She said the scammers tailor the content of the letters according to the victim's location, with changes made to names, addresses, and contact persons to make the communication appear authentic.
'Also, these WhatsApp messages are preceded by phone calls from individuals posing as police officials, who falsely claim that criminal cases have been opened against the victim,' she added.
She stated that these so-called 'police officers' coerce victims into paying a certain amount to make their supposed cases 'disappear'.
'Anyone who has received or responded to these fraudulent messages or phone calls is urged to report the matter and open a case at their nearest police station.'
She further warned that 'the SAPS do not communicate with the public via WhatsApp or video calls'.
SAPS urges all members to remain vigilant at all times.

– Don't respond to these fraudulent messages or phone calls.
– Don't provide or confirm any personal information such as ID numbers, addresses, or banking details.
– Don't pay these 'scammers' any money.

Malawian national arrested in KZN over a series of robberies
Police have arrested a 26-year-old Malawian national in Verulam CBD, KwaZulu-Natal, in connection with a series of robberies. A victim allegedly recognised the suspect near Todd Street by the railway station on Monday 2 June and alerted others, who then assaulted him before officers arrived. According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), a group made up primarily of foreign nationals had already begun assaulting the suspect by the time officers arrived. The confrontation began when one of the robbery victims spotted the man and confronted him with the help of bystanders. Two weeks ago, the suspect allegedly forced his way into a home in Southridge, brandished a firearm, and robbed a man of his cellphone in front of the victim's minor daughter. Since the incident, the victim had been searching for the suspect and recognised him in the Verulam CBD. During questioning, the suspect admitted to selling the stolen phone to a foreign national in Durban. RUSA officers confirmed his involvement in at least three other robberies in Temple Valley. Officers recovered the firearm used in the crimes, later identified as a replica blank gun. RUSA officers restrained the suspect and handed him over to SAPS Verulam, where he remains in custody pending further investigation. Mkhwanazi slams doorless car cop [video]
KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has ordered that disciplinary steps be taken against a police officer who was captured on a viral video driving a doorless marked police car. The video was taken on Sunday, 1 June, as the police vehicle was involved in an accident in the Durban North policing precincts where it collided with a minibus taxi. According to the police, the driver at the time of the accident was a female Warrant Officer who was trapped inside the vehicle, and the door had to be removed to rescue her. KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said without the door, although in a drivable condition, the vehicle should have been towed back to the police station. 'Instead of following prescribed procedures, another driver, also a Warrant Officer, drove the vehicle to the station, endangering his life and putting the name and the image of the SAPS into disrepute,' he said. Child Protection Week: Growing calls for tougher sentences for child abuse offenders

Picture: Supplied As South Africa marks Child Protection Week to raise awareness about children's rights and safety, non-profit organisation Joburg Child Welfare (JCW) has called for harsher punishments for perpetrators of child abuse. This year's theme, 'Working together in ending violence against children', urges all South Africans to unite in protecting children from harm. South Africa marks Child Protection Week from 29 May to 5 June 2025. As part of the week's activities, JCW and other non-profit organisations marched to the Department of Justice on Sunday, 1 June. Child Protection Week 'With more than 26 000 cases of child abuse and neglect reported in the 2024-25 financial year, according to the Department of Social Development, it is high time that we emphasise more comprehensive approaches to strengthen children's protective environments,' said Abubakr Hattas, CEO of JCW. The organisation said the march aimed to demand the urgent implementation of tougher penalties for child abuse offenders, particularly those involved in Schedule 6 crimes. This means backing initiatives that teach kids the importance of boundaries and respect for one another, while also educating them about their rights to safety and protection, Hattas said. 'South Africa has strong legislation and a national action plan to prevent and address violence against children, indicating urgent commitment to the protection of children's rights. However, laws and policies by themselves are insufficient; they are ineffective without enforcement,' he said. ALSO READ: Violence against children soars despite strong laws Hattas added that society needs to build a stronger consensus and show greater intolerance for abuse and violence to truly protect children. 'Acceptance of violence against children undermines protective norms and practices, sharply increasing children's vulnerability to violations of their rights,' Hattas concluded. 'More must be done to advocate for and protect the rights of every child and young people in the country.' Recent arrests and sentences for child sexual offenders Amid Child Protection Week, the South African Police Service (Saps) has highlighted the recent harsher sentences and arrests against perpetrators who committed crimes against children. Police arrested a 50-year-old man in Brackenfell, Cape Town, on multiple charges, including sexual exploitation, grooming, and facilitating the production of child pornography. ALSO READ: Parents sentenced for murder and abuse of one-year-old daughter Saps spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mukhathi said the Free State Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations (SECI) Unit traced the suspect to the Western Cape after conducting an extensive investigation into cyber sexual crimes against minors. Recently, a father of three has been sentenced to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting his children, aged between three and 13 years. The conviction comes after the children's mother reported the case to the Benoni police on 4 August 2021. The Benoni Regional Court found the father guilty on multiple charges, including rape, sexual assault, compelling or causing a minor to masturbate, and exposing genital organs, Pastor sentenced to 2 life terms Furthermore, on 26 May 2025, the Edenburg Regional Court sentenced a 47-year-old pastor to two life terms of imprisonment after finding him guilty of raping a 12-year-old girl. 'As South Africa observes Child Protection Week, the Saps remains committed and dedicated to protecting children's rights and ensuring justice for victims of sexual crimes,' Mukhathi said.
