Yes, You Should Use Fuel Detergent. Your Engine Will Thank you
If you're the type of person who cares about the health of your car's engine, you likely use high-quality, brand-name gasoline. The detergents in that gasoline are responsible for keeping injectors clean and removing harmful deposits. But they might not be doing enough, according to one expert.
Lake Speed Jr. of
The Motor Oil Geek
YouTube channel explains that while "Top Tier" gasoline from brands like Shell, Mobil, Chevron, and Sunoco helps to keep deposits down and injectors healthy, adding a bottle of purpose-made fuel detergent to your tank every few thousand miles can do much more of both.
This detergent is responsible for ensuring your injectors work properly, without any faults or blockage in the spray nozzles. If your car uses port injection, the detergents can also help to clean intake tunnels and valves, removing carbon deposits that, if left untreated, could decrease performance and efficiency.
If you think fuel detergent is a waste of money, think about it this way: One bottle of detergent costs about $13. If you add a bottle to your car's gas tank every 3,000 miles, that means it would only cost you about four cents per mile. For that extra peace of mind, we'd say that's worth it.
Speed Jr. says the easiest way to remember when to add detergent is to do it whenever you perform an oil change. So long as you're running high-quality, brand-name gasoline, you won't need to do it very often.

The Base XM Is Dead for 2026. Long Live the BMW XM Label
BMW is making some serious changes to the XM for 2026. The base trim has been dropped, leaving the 738-horsepower XM Label as the only model available. There's also a better charging rate for the hybrid system, and a host of new exterior colors and interior themes to choose from. As before, the 2026 BMW XM Label gets its power from a twin-turbo V-8 making 577 hp, combined with an electric motor mounted between the engine and transmission. All 738 pound-feet of torque travel through an eight-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels. BMW quotes a 0-60 time of 3.6 seconds, and an electronically limited top speed of 155 miles per hour (or 175 mph, if you option the M Driver's Package). Photo by: BMW In the past, going for the XM Label (previously known as the Label Red) represented a significant jump in performance over the 644-hp base model. Buyers also got some exclusive red-painted exterior trim pieces to visually set it apart. Choosing the Label also came at a cost; the 2025 XM Label started at $187,875 with destination, a $26,200 premium over the standard car. New Options to Choose From Aside from a handful of red-accented exterior badges, the 2026 XM Label has dropped those flashy red trim pieces. BMW has added a handful of new colors to choose from, including the Individual Frozen Tanzanite Blue metallic you see here. Buyers can also now opt to have the XM's standard 23-inch wheels in black (22s are available as a no-cost option). There's a trio of new interior themes to choose from, too: Individual Night Blue full Merino leather with Vintage Coffee accents, Individual Black full Merino leather with Vintage Coffee accents, and Individual Silverstone extended Merino leather with black accents. Better Onboard Charging The XM Label's drivetrain is a full carry-over for 2026. That means it has the same 19.2-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack under the floor. The only change, according to BMW, comes in the M Hybrid's onboard charger. The charging rate has been bumped to 11 kilowatts, up from just 7.4 kilowatts. Photo by: BMW Photo by: BMW Photo by: BMW Before the change, BMW claimed a full charge would take 3 hours, 15 minutes. The company didn't quote an updated time, but we have to assume it's a bit quicker now. Like before, the plug-in system in the XM Label unlocks a fully electric driving range of 30 miles. Launch Date & Pricing BMW will reveal the 2026 XM Label on Saturday, June 14, in France at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Production at the company's Spartanburg, South Carolina, plant will kick off in August, though pricing hasn't been released. The previous XM Label carried a starting MSRP of $187,875, so expect a small price bump to match the added options and better charging. ‘Never Knew This:' Honda Civic Driver of 3 Years Reaches for Key Fob. Then She Realizes It Has a Little-Known Feature
Now that summer is in full swing, internal car temperatures are on the rise. Leaving your car out to bake in the sun can be a brutal experience upon return. The car feels like a sauna when entering, while the leather seats burn the skin. You slowly roast alive while the air conditioning takes an eternity to get going. This is why car drivers will use a series of moves to do everything to keep the car temperature down while away. Drivers will prioritize parking in the shade, using windshield sun shades, and tinting windows to block out the sun. Some will also crack windows to let subtle airflow into the car while parked. In a TikTok with nearly 7,000 views, Bryce (@ recently discovered a new key fob feature with her Honda Civic that'll help her beat the heat this summer. New Feature or Just a New Discovery? In her post, Bryce finds out that she can roll down the windows using the key fob of her Honda Civic. While scrolling through TikTok, she found a video revealing this feature for Honda Civics. Bryce immediately reached for her key fob and went to the garage. 'If this works, this is going to be crazy,' she begins her video. She points the key fob at her car and presses unlock on her key fob twice with an extended hold on the second press. After patiently waiting to see what happens, she was in disbelief to see her Civic windows roll down. More on Honda 'Do People Not Read the Owner's Manual Anymore?': Woman Buys New Honda. Then She Tries Filling It Up With Gas Honda Wants to Make the 'World's Most Efficient' Hybrids This discovery left her hyped and even more in love with her Civic. While this was a new discovery for Bryce, some viewers mentioned that this isn't new. 'My 2010 Accord does this and when I first found out it did it I was so hype,' one TikTok commenter shared. 'Even my old 2007 Honda accord did this when I had it,' another commenter added. How to Roll Down Windows Using your Key Fob While each car brand will have a specific cadence and sequence to follow, here are some beginning places to search. First, check the owner's manual. The manual will provide the specific instructions needed to activate the key fob window roll-down. As some makes and models will vary, the manual is the best place to get correct information specific to your car. Now, if reading through the manual isn't your thing, try this. Click the unlock button once on your keyfob, then hold it again for anywhere from five to 10 seconds. While holding down the unlock button, see if the windows start rolling down. Once the windows are at the desired height, release the unlock button and press lock to stop the window from rolling down. What Are the Downsides to This Key Fob Feature? With any new features come some issues. One of the downsides to this key fob secret is that it's simply not commonly known among drivers. While this feature is great if you know about it, it's not always so great when you accidentally discover it. Multiple stories have been shared on Reddit and other forums about drivers coming back to their cars only to find the windows are down. As commenters note, these drivers likely unknowingly activated this key fob feature. This can happen when the key fob is sitting buried in a purse or deep down in pants pockets. Drivers have left cars in parking lots for hours with windows fully rolled down, only to hope nothing is gone or damaged. In addition, storms can sweep through at any moment, which would put a real damper on the day. While some drivers are excited to flex this feature off, others are irritated by it. Which side are you on? What Did Viewers Think? 'That's not crazy y'all what's crazy is that they built these cars to go over 300000 miles y'all now that's crazy,' one commented. 'Does nobody read their car's instruction manuals anymore?' a second added. 'Most cars nowadays do it, y'all just gotta figure out the sequence for your specific car,' a third shared. 'Took me 6 months to find out my car does this,' another driver added. Motor1 has contacted Bryce via TikTok direct message. We'll be sure to update this article if we get a response. You Can't Give Teslas Away These Days, but Tesla's Actually Trying To
Free car giveaways are typically associated with TV game shows, radio sweepstakes, or halftime contests, but right now there's one being hosted directly by an automaker. By participating in Tesla's 'TeslaVision' contest, you could score a brand-new Model Y and a private tour of the Texas Gigafactory. In 2017, Tesla held 'Project Loveday,' a video contest named after a 10-year-old fan of the brand who wrote a letter to CEO Elon Musk suggesting that customers submit promotional video clips to make up for the company's lack of traditional advertising. That contest received thousands of submissions and was eventually won by none other than YouTube superstar Marques Brownlee. The TeslaVision Contest Now, Tesla is holding the TeslaVision contest as a follow-up to Project Loveday. According to the company, it's here 'to commemorate launching deliveries of New Model Y in all continents where we operate.' That new Model Y is the so-called Juniper version, which arrived earlier this year sporting hardware updates, a remodeled interior, and a Cybertruck-esque headlight bar. So, the TeslaVision contest—it is, in Tesla's words, 'a global celebration and showcase of the owners and fans who have always recognized the true value and impact of our products.' To participate, submit a video no longer than 90 seconds 'showing how Tesla vehicles give you more in your life—more freedom, more safety, more fun, more convenience.' That video must then be posted to YouTube and shared on X and Instagram with Tesla's accounts tagged, and then those links uploaded in the contest submission form on Tesla's site. In addition to the Model Y winner, two runners-up will get an all-expenses-paid private tour of the Gigafactory outside of Austin, Texas, which produces some Model Ys and every Cybertruck. We Have Some Thoughts Acclaimed as America's best-selling EV, one might imagine that the Model Y is in such high demand that it wouldn't be so available as to be offered up as a giveaway. Evidently, however, Tesla has enough idle inventory to make one the grand prize in the TeslaVision contest. The EV innovator has faced harsh backlash due to CEO Musk's controversial involvement in Donald Trump's presidential administration. It's possible that the TeslaVision contest is being held to gather and then promote positive takes from Tesla fans who remain unbothered by Musk's drastic social impact, and are uninterested in the numerous other EVs from brands that don't have the contentious symbolism that Tesla now does, in addition to potentially longer range, faster charging, better quality, greater comfort, prettier styling, or higher performance. To wit, we question how a video could be created under Tesla's suggested parameters. Regarding 'freedom,' the advantage Tesla once held by keeping its widespread Supercharger network exclusive to its own cars is slipping away as other EVs gain access, allowing rivals to also enjoy road trip ease. Regarding safety, the 2025 Model Y scores the highest five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, as a plethora of other EVs do, but it no longer qualifies for IIHS Top Safety Pick as it did in years past. Furthermore, how Tesla's flagship Full Self-Driving (FSD) software has a propensity to make errors such as veering across a solid double yellow line into the oncoming lane of traffic makes safety seem tenuous at best. About fun, in our testing and assessments we've found Tesla vehicles don't have much to offer beyond the common EV attribute of quick straight-line acceleration, while rivals have superior chassis and handling refinement. To convenience, the spacious cabin, frunk and sub-trunk, and minimalistic layout found in Tesla vehicles contribute to that measure. However, the experience with MotorTrend 's 2023 Model Y long-term review car has often proved incredibly frustrating, such as the finicky flush-mounted exterior door handles, which often do nothing because the car doesn't recognize its smartphone app-based key, or how the cruise control can deactivate when using the windshield washers, or how, for now, using an adapter is necessary to charge on public Level 2 plugs. Hmm, maybe we wouldn't win this contest... positive thoughts! We should also point out the incongruity between asking fans and owners—many of whom likely already own a Model Y, given its ubiquity—to get excited about winning another one. If you're super excited about Tesla and want to show the company just how great you think it is and win a Model Y, you can submit your video clip to the TeslaVision contest website. Act soon, since the contest closes on July 17, 2025 or when 10,000 entries are received, whichever comes first.
