Two Thai women among five nabbed using illegal jetties to enter Malaysia
RANTAU PANJANG: Two Thai women were among five individuals arrested by the General Operations Force (GOF) for entering the country through illegal routes.
The five were detained at three separate locations here between 8.45am and 1.30pm yesterday.
GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said the arrests were made during a surveillance operation under 'Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan' in the Rantau Panjang area.
"The suspects, three Malaysian men and two Thai women, were apprehended at three illegal jetties, namely Parkir, Pohon Jambu, and MCA.
"The Thai women were found to have entered Malaysia without valid travel documents," he said.
Nik Azhan added that the three Malaysian men tested positive for methamphetamine and ketamine.
"They were detained under Section 5(2) of the Immigration Act 1959/63," he said.
He added that the GOF would continue efforts to curb illegal border crossings along Malaysia's borders.
In a separate case, a Thai woman was detained for smuggling frozen chicken and food items worth RM62,000 in Tumpat yesterday.
The 48-year-old woman was arrested during a raid at a store in Pengkalan Kubor.
"Also seized in the 11.30am operation was a four-wheel drive vehicle used to transport the goods," he said.
He added that the 602kg of frozen food and 240kg of frozen chicken had been smuggled from Thailand for local distribution.

SEPANG: A freelancer was fined RM20,000 by the Sessions Court here today after pleading guilty to distributing obscene and sexually explicit videos for commercial purposes in February last year. Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman handed down the sentence to Ahmad Ali Madali, 40, and ordered a six-month jail term in default of payment. The man was charged with knowingly using a Telegram account to transmit obscene communication by providing access to the Telegram group 'Swinger Melayu VVIP XXXX,' which contained pornographic videos, for commercial purposes to an undercover agent from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) at 10.05 pm on Feb 10, 2024. The charge was framed under Section 233(2)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, punishable under Section 233(3) of the same Act, which provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000, a jail term of up to one year, or both, upon conviction. Based on the facts of the case, a check on the mobile phone used by the accused revealed a Touch 'n Go e-wallet transaction history of RM400 made to him by the undercover agent. Ahmad Fuad said the offence had a significant impact on public morality and was contrary to Islamic values and the Rukun Negara principles. 'Society today is becoming increasingly indecent, and if this trend continues, it will lead to serious problems. Public morality must be upheld, and such activities must be appropriately punished,' he said. The charge was handled by MCMC prosecuting officer Mohamad Azmir Mohd Razali, while the accused was unrepresented. Pleading for leniency, Ahmad Adli said that he had no fixed income, was supporting his wife and three-year-old child, and was paying for his father-in-law's medical expenses. However, the prosecution urged the court to impose a heavy sentence on Ahmad Ali, citing the severity of the offence and its negative impact on society, noting that children could potentially access the videos. NIOSH urges tighter safety measures at construction sites after Bangsar incident
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has urged improved safety measures at construction sites following the discovery of a British traveller's body at a site in Bangsar recently. NIOSH chairman Chong Chieng Jen said the incident raised questions about public access to the area and called for a review of existing safety protocols. "Construction sites are inherently high-risk and should not, under any circumstances, be accessible to the public," he said in a statement on Thursday (June 12). On June 5, police confirmed that the body found the previous day at a construction site in Bangsar was that of the missing 25-year-old British national, last seen on May 27. Chong said Section 15 of the Occupational Safety and Health (Amendment) Act (OSHA) 2022 spells out the duty of employers to ensure the safety, health and welfare of employees at the workplace, while Section 17 emphasises the responsibility to safeguard others present at the site. "Employers and self-employed individuals are also required, as far as reasonably practicable, to ensure that their operations do not pose safety or health risks to non-employees. "They must also provide information on any hazards that could affect the safety or health of individuals present at the worksite," the statement said. Chong reminded developers, contractors and all relevant parties to comply with the Act or risk being fined up to RM500,000, jailed for up to two years, or both. He said that preventive measures, including effective perimeter fencing, adequate security surveillance, systematic access control, and clear warning signage, should be standard at all construction sites. "Risk management at construction sites should not only focus on protecting workers, but also on ensuring the safety of the public, especially in densely populated urban areas frequented by tourists," he said. In addition, NIOSH has called on the Occupational Safety and Health Department and the Construction Industry Development Board to conduct an immediate and comprehensive investigation to identify any breach of standard operating procedures or provisions under OSHA. MACC nabs four for alleged NGO fund misappropriation
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested four individuals, including three committee members of a non-governmental organisation (NGO), on suspicion of conspiring to misappropriate funds belonging to the NGO where they work. According to a source, the suspects—two men and two women in their 30s—were arrested between 4 pm and 7 pm yesterday when they came to give their statements at the MACC office in Melaka. 'Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were believed to have committed the offence between 2015 and 2025. They are suspected of conspiring with the NGO chairman, who abused power and misappropriated funds for personal gain,' the source said. Following the arrests, the MACC seized RM900,000 in cash, jewellery, nine land lots located in Melaka, Penang and Selangor, and four residential units in Melaka. Fourteen accounts—eight belonging to individuals and six to companies—with a total balance of about RM5 million were also frozen. Magistrate Nur Afiqah Radhiah Zainurin today granted a seven-day remand order until next Tuesday for all suspects, following an application made by the MACC at the Melaka Magistrate's Court. Meanwhile, Selangor MACC director Hairuzam Mohmad Amin@Hamim, when contacted, confirmed the arrests, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.
