One of the eyewitnesses said the fire was massive, ACs were exploding, and despite efforts to save two children, doctors couldn't help
A massive fire on the ninth floor of a building in Delhi's Dwarka claimed the lives of three family members, including a young girl and a teenage boy, and trapping 12 family members inside with no escape and no help from the neighbours.
The deceased included 40-year-old Yash Yadav who was a flex printing businessman, his 11-year-old daughter Ashima and his nephew. According to a PTI report, they succumbed to multiple fractures resulting from an approximately 80-foot jump, as well as burns sustained in the fire.
The heartbreaking sight of the three victims standing on the balcony, with no way out but to jump, left onlookers helpless.
Yash's son Aditya, along with his wife and several family members visiting from Uttar Pradesh, narrowly escaped a fire, according to PTI reports. The survivors, including Aditya, Suraj, Uditya, Mamta's sister Madvi, and a few other relatives, were rescued when locals broke open the front door of their flat and rushed to their aid.
Police and fire officials reported receiving the fire call around 10:01 am on Tuesday. However, the emergency response teams allegedly arrived an hour later. By the time help reached the scene, three individuals had already jumped from the ninth-floor apartment in a desperate attempt to save themselves.
Eyewitnesses were deeply moved, with one recounting, 'There was a massive fire and the AC was also exploding. We tried to save two children, but we couldn't. I took them to the hospital myself, but the doctor said 'sorry'. The little girl kept screaming as people made videos."
'At around 9:40 am, I was nearby buying vegetables when I noticed flames and smoke. Three people were clinging to the balcony, screaming. Despite people urging them not to jump, they had no other choice," an eyewitness recounted to PTI under anonymity.
Another local described their helplessness as they watched the tragic event from the street below. 'We could see everything but couldn't do anything. There were no bedsheets, mattresses, or safety nets to save them," he explained.
Jitender Singh, a local shopkeeper, mentioned that numerous calls to emergency services were made, but the fire brigade arrived about an hour later. 'If they had come on time, lives could have been saved," he remarked.
According to a PTI report, Amit Bhandari, a close friend of Yadav, said the family had returned home from a Bhagwat Katha at his sister's house, about three kilometers away, late Sunday night. 'No one could imagine this would happen," Bhandari expressed.
Bhandari also stated that when the fire started, the guards didn't even open the gate. People were screaming, but no one came to assist. Neighbours were busy recording videos instead of helping, he alleged.
Police reported that the fire likely began due to a short circuit in the temple area of the house. The exact cause will be determined following a forensic inspection. Despite the family's desperate pleas for help, bystanders were more focused on recording the incident than offering assistance.
The fire brigade reportedly took about an hour to arrive, during which the fire spread quickly, filling the flat with dense smoke. The delay in emergency response and the onlookers' lack of action have prompted intense scrutiny and raised questions about the building's safety measures.
Yash Yadav, a businessman who started his interior design and kitchen module business during the lockdown in the aftermath of the pandemic, had purchased the flat just two years ago.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he started a small business focused on modular kitchens and interior design. Only two years ago, he moved into this flat, and now everything is lost," Bhandari expressed sorrowfully.
According to the PTI report, Yadav's family intends to take the bodies to Etah in Uttar Pradesh, Yash's hometown. Yash's eldest son, Aditya, is currently in his first year of BBA.

Mamata writes to Modi, seeks international pressure on B'desh govt for vandalism of Tagore property

Expressing her anguish over the incident, Banerjee urged Modi to 'take up the matter very strongly with the neighbouring country's government, so that no stone is left unturned to swiftly bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous and mindless act'. What was damaged is not just a house but a 'towering fountain of creativity' in the subcontinent, she said in the letter. Kolkata, Jun 12 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister on Thursday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention into the alleged vandalisation of Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral mansion in Banglaesh's Sirajganj district by a mob on June 11. According to local reports, the attack on the Nobel Laureate poet's ancestral residence was a follow-up of a June 8 dispute over the parking fee for a two-wheeler between a visitor and staff member of the Rabindra Kachharibari in Sirajganj which also doubles up as the Rabindra Memorial Museum. 'Although untold damage has already been done, a strong international protest would at least deter in future any attack on monuments of cultural legacies that have withstood steadfastly all tests of time,' Banerjee wrote in the letter, while adding: Tagore is famous not only in Bengal but also in the whole world. Reports in Bangladeshi media have stated that the Department of Archeology has temporarily suspended visitor access to the building and set up a three-member committee to probe the incident. 'Tagore frequented the place repeatedly in his lifetime, and many of his finest works were conceived or written while he was there,' Banerjee stated. 'The poet's creativity was intertwined with his association with this ancestral estate of theirs in an intimate manner. What has been vandalised is not a mere house, but a towering fountain of creativity in our subcontinent,' she continued. Local reports in Bangladesh suggested that what began as a minor dispute escalated quickly after the visitor was allegedly locked inside a room and physically assaulted, sparking anger among locals. A mob later stormed inside the museum premises and ransacked the building, especially its auditorium while also allegedly assaulting the director of the institution. 'For the people of Bengal, this attack is an onslaught on the commonly held legacy of Tagore… To strike at the ancestral traditional roots of Tagore today tantamounts to striking at the roots of immortal creations of the great poet intrinsically bonding the brothers and sisters of the world,' the chief minister wrote in her letter. Located in Shahzadpur in the Rajshahi division, the Kachharibari served as the Tagore family's revenue office and residence. Purchased by Rabindranath's grandfather Dwarakanath Tagore in 1840, the premises worked as a favourite recluse for the Nobel laureate who wrote many of his notable literary works at this site. Tagore's celebrated works from the Sirajgunj Kachharibari include plays like 'Bisarjan', poetry collection 'Sonar Tori' and several shorties of 'Golpoguchho'. The BJP has already slammed the Md Yunus government alleging that the destruction was a 'preplanned attack' by radical groups, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh. UP govt to equip UP Forest Force with smart surveillance tools: Officials

'The initiative also includes the development of an Integrated Forest Management System (IFMS) and the establishment of a centralised command centre for real-time monitoring,' the statement read. According to officials from the department, the force will be upgraded using IT and AI technologies, sensor-enabled surveillance cameras, GPS tracking devices and other smart monitoring tools to strengthen forest protection, management, and prevention of wildlife crimes. Lucknow, Jun 12 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh Forest and Wildlife Department on Thursday said it has formulated an action plan to modernise the 'UP Forest Force', according to a statement. 'The effort aims not only to enhance conservation and management but also to ensure data-driven decision-making and swift action in response to forest offences,' it added. Uttar Pradesh, known for its rich biodiversity and forest resources, has long faced challenges such as illegal logging, wildlife trafficking, and human-wildlife conflict. To combat these issues, the Forest and Wildlife Department has, under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's leadership, developed a plan to make the UP Forest Force more vigilant and effective through the use of modern technologies. 'As part of this plan, the department is developing an Integrated Forest Management System (IFMS) that will utilise advanced technologies like drones, satellite imagery, GIS mapping, and sensor-based surveillance. This system will allow for precise and efficient monitoring and forest conservation,' it said. 'It will also help track all activities within forest zones, aiding in the prevention of unexpected and unlawful incidents,' it added. To facilitate real-time monitoring across forest regions, tiger reserves, safaris and national parks in the state, the department is establishing a centralised command centre. This digital control hub will monitor all key operations related to forest and wildlife management and collect relevant data, the statement said. The analysis of data at the command centre will provide immediate insights into forest crimes, fire incidents and wildlife movements, enabling prompt and effective response, it added. A senior Forest Department official stated that the goal is to make forest management and conservation more efficient and responsive through modern technology. 'The department is also prioritising data-driven decision-making, which will enhance accuracy. In addition, the use of AI and machine learning will allow for better analysis of wildlife behaviour and environmental changes, helping to formulate long-term conservation strategies with greater ease,' the official said.
