Ukrainian drone triggers fire in apartment building west of Moscow, official says
A Ukrainian drone struck a multi-storey apartment building outside Moscow early on Tuesday, triggering a fire and injuring two people, TASS news agency quoted a local official as saying.
Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the Moscow region, said the drone started a fire on the 17th floor of the building in the town of Krasnogorsk, west of the capital. The injured people were receiving treatment at a hospital.
Vorobyov said two other drones were shot down west of Moscow.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said earlier that Russian air defences had intercepted two Ukrainian drones heading for the city overnight.
Sobyanin, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said specialists were examining the debris of at least one drone downed after midnight.
The mayor said a third drone targeting the capital had been repelled earlier in the evening.
Russia's defence ministry reported that air defence units had destroyed nine drones in a 90-minute period before midnight, including nine over the border regions of Kursk and Bryansk.
Ukraine has launched drone attacks on a wide range of targets in recent months, some a long distance from the Ukrainian border.
In one attack this month, dubbed 'Operation Spider's Web,' Ukrainian drones targeted long-range military aircraft at a number of Russian bases.

Ramli, who is also a Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker, became Malaysia's first Orang Asli MP when he was elected to the Cameron Highlands seat in a by-election in 2019. He won with a majority of 3,238 votes. He defended the seat for a second term in the 2022 general election, winning with a greater majority of 4,544 votes. PAS needs intellectual, moderate leaders to broaden support, says analyst

PETALING JAYA: PAS needs intellectual and moderate leaders, not just loud or outspoken politicians, to win broader support, according to an analyst. Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said the Islamic party must project such leaders to counter the perception among non-Malays that PAS is an extremist party. 'What PAS needs is not just a vocal leader, but someone who is intellectual and moderate, especially to ease fears among non-Malay communities,' he told FMT. Azmi was commenting on a recent move by Alor Setar PAS to nominate the party's election director, Sanusi Nor, for the vice-president's post ahead of the party elections in September. PAS Dewan Ulama committee member Mokhtar Senik gave Sanusi's nomination his '200%' support, citing the latter's bold and outspoken nature. Azmi said the majority of voters were likely to judge Sanusi based on his performance as Kedah menteri besar, particularly compared with other PAS-led states like Perlis, Kelantan, and Terengganu. Meanwhile, Syaza Shukri of International Islamic University Malaysia said Sanusi stood a strong chance of winning the vice-presidency although she expected the race for the position this time to be highly competitive. Sanusi declined nomination for the vice-president's post during the 2023 party elections, saying he had already turned down the offer twice before. The PAS vice-presidency is currently held by Kemaman MP Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, Bagan Serai MP Idris Ahmad, and Kelantan state assembly speaker Amar Abdullah. None of the three was challenged in the last election. Married couple claims trial to abusing daughter

(Freepik pic) KANGAR: A married couple pleaded not guilty in the sessions court here today to a charge of abusing their 10-year-old daughter last week, resulting in physical injuries to the child. The man, a mechanic, and his wife, a homemaker, both aged 37, claimed trial after the charge was read before judge Sharifah Norazlita Syed Salim Idid. The husband and wife, as individuals having custody of the child, were accused of committing the offence against the girl at a house in Taman Desa Saujana, Arau, at around 12.15pm on June 18. They were charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which is punishable by a maximum jail term of 20 years, a fine of up to RM50,000, or both, upon conviction. The court allowed their release on bail of RM20,000 each with the additional conditions that they report to the nearest police station every month and are prohibited from approaching or disturbing the victim until the case concludes. The court fixed July 17 for mention.
