Top NBA free-agent centers: Would Myles Turner really leave an NBA Finalist?

Top NBA free-agent centers: Would Myles Turner really leave an NBA Finalist?

Yahoo5 hours ago

The NBA's runners-up have some business to tend to in a surprisingly deep — for this year's class — positional group.
Let's break down the potential top available centers in this year's free-agent market, with the negotiating window opening at 6 p.m. ET June 30.
(Note: Positions are being determined off Basketball-Reference's positional breakdowns, meaning a player will be listed at the position in which he played the most minutes.)
Free-agent position rankings: Point guards | Shooting guards | Small forwards | Power forwards
1. Myles Turner, Indiana Pacers
Status: Unrestricted free agent
Rule of thumb: When you've been historically underpaid, you're the starting center for a Finals team, you're one of the best defenders in the league, and you're in your prime, you're in line for a raise.
Turner, one of the league's most potent 3&D centers, has undergone an offensive transformation over the past few years, to the point where the Pacers cannot lose him.

What makes sense: With not a lot of money on the market, and the fact that both sides seem motivated to continue their partnership, expect Turner and Indiana to find common ground on a new deal that looks significantly richer than the ones before.
2. Naz Reid, Minnesota Timberwolves
Status: Player option
Value of option: $15,022,464
There's no question some teams will view Reid as a starting center, especially given his touch from the outside. Yet, the Wolves have used him in a backup capacity throughout his career, which makes you wonder if Reid himself is open to chasing a starting role.
Reid is ingrained in the local community and seems to genuinely treasure being a Timberwolf. Of course, that doesn't mean he'll just sign whatever is in front of him, but it does seem likely he could be willing to sacrifice something to stick around.

What makes sense: The best path forward could be to wait until next summer by picking up his option and hope more teams have money to spend. That also gives him another year of data to determine whether he indeed wants to be a career backup.
3. Brook Lopez, Milwaukee Bucks
Status: Unrestricted free agent
Lopez might be 37. He might be slow. He might be declining. But the man is still a physical behemoth who will clog the paint, block shots and drain a ton of 3-pointers.
Those are valuable marks in today's NBA, even if Lopez doesn't necessarily fit into the 'switch everything' ideology. As such, there should be a market for a team, especially among good teams looking for someone reliable who has championship experience.
What makes sense: Staying with the Bucks another year isn't a bad play, but if Lopez is looking for another title run, he'll have to look outside of the organization and identify a team that's closer.
4. Clint Capela, Atlanta Hawks
Status: Unrestricted free agent
Capela is getting older and less dynamic, but he's still a tough rebounder who challenges shots at the rim and remains a solid lob threat.
While his compensation level will diminish due to his age and a starting role no longer being a sure thing, plenty of teams should give him a look.
What makes sense: The Los Angeles Lakers will unquestionably have internal meetings about Capela, considering his theoretical fit with Luka Dončić. Should that be the path Capela chooses, there's a world where he once again will produce impressive box scores.
5. Moritz Wagner, Orlando Magic
Status: Team option
Value of option: $11,000,000
Advertisement
Wagner tore his ACL in December, so we should see teams offer him deals that greatly benefit them in terms of flexibility.
If we assume he returns to full health, Wagner immediately becomes one of the best backup scoring big men in the league, with the capability of stretching the floor and providing necessary spacing.
What makes sense: Despite the injury and the fact that he could be an unrestricted free agent next summer, the Magic should try to keep him long term. Perhaps Wagner is inclined to agree to a longer deal worth less money than he's earning now in the hope that he can bounce back after his injury.
6. Guerschon Yabusele, Philadelphia 76ers
Status: Unrestricted free agent
Advertisement
Using last year's Olympics as a display window, Yabusele made the most of his NBA return, becoming a key offensive contributor for the Sixers.
The 29-year-old, affectionately known as The Dancing Bear, is at a stage in his career when optimizing his own salary and role should be his top priority.
What makes sense: Yabusele should hear out the Sixers but absolutely seek the biggest payday possible, regardless of team, since he's closing in on 30. For a guy like him, who can occasionally play recklessly, securing his own future is the goal.
Best of the rest
Jaylin Williams, Oklahoma City Thunder
Status: Team option
Value of option: $2,187,699

Williams, who was drafted in the second round in 2022, is in an interesting situation. If the Thunder pick up his option, he'll enter 2026 as an unrestricted free agent. If they don't, he'll become a restricted free agent this summer. Williams is a solid talent, even if he isn't playing a ton of minutes. The 6-foot-9 big man has multiple double-doubles to his name, which underlines the vastness of his skill set. Plenty of teams should have an eye on him.
Andre Drummond, Philadelphia 76ers
Status: Player option
Value of option: $5,000,000
One of the greatest rebounders of his generation can dictate his own future, but the market for him hasn't been strong these past few years.
If he sticks in Philadelphia, it's likely he'll get a ton of minutes should Joel Embiid not be available.

Ex NFL Wideout Solves Browns Quarterback Dilemma

Ex NFL Wideout Solves Browns Quarterback Dilemma originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cleveland Browns are working with a crowded quarterback room this offseason. With Deshaun Watson shelved due to a second Achilles tear in three months back in January, general manager Andrew Berry signed a couple of veterans to fight for the starting role. Advertisement Berry also drafted two young players to make things interesting. The 40-year-old Joe Flacco is the most experienced in the room, followed by Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh's first-round pick in 2022. Berry selected Dillon Gabriel in the third round this season and Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round. They're all fighting for the starting job in Week 1. But former Green Bay Packers wide receiver James Jones has it all figured out, as he described on a recent episode of "The Facility." "Pickett is still extremely young," Jones said. "If he goes out here and plays well, that's a bonus for your football team, and then you have two young dudes behind them that you are developing. Joe Flacco going out there, I absolutely disagree with that because he's older. You're not going to win a lot. But with Kenny Pickett going out there, he's young. He was a first-rounder." Advertisement 'If it's not Kenny Pickett, the only other option is Shedeur because I believe he's the most-talented quarterback on that roster.". Flacco is clearly the favorite to start due to his experience both in the NFL and in Kevin Stefanski's offense when he subbed for five games back in 2023. But Jones thinks that's a terrible idea. Training camp and the preseason should be fun in Cleveland this season. Justin Tucker Handed 10-Game Suspension By NFL

Justin Tucker Handed 10-Game Suspension By NFL originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Baltimore Ravens were thrust into uncertainty on special teams when kicker Justin Tucker was accused of sexual misconduct by several Baltimore-area massage therapists. Advertisement On May 5, the Ravens moved on from the former All-Pro, even after having remained adamant that they will wait for the NFL to conclude its investigation before making any significant moves regarding Tucker's future. Now, the NFL has announced Tucker's punishment. According to league insider Adam Schefter, Tucker, 35, is suspended without pay for the first 10 weeks of the 2025 season for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. The following statement has been released by Tucker's representative Rob Roche: "We are disappointed with the NFL's decision. Justin has always strived to carry himself in a way that would make his family and community proud. He stands by his previous statements. In order to put this difficult episode behind him and get back on the field as soon as possible, we have advised Justin to accept this resolution and close this matter. The people who know Justin best know his character and understand that while he remains fully committed to excellence as a football player, he is deeply dedicated to his most important lifetime roles as a father, husband, and friend.' Advertisement In the league's press release, the suspension will take effect on roster cut day, August 26 and he will be eligible for reinstatement on November 11. Tucker is currently still a free agent. If he were to be signed by a team, he is able to serve his suspension under contract. He is able to communicate and try out for a club, and if he is signed, is able to attend training camp this offseason. Six massage therapists have come forward, accusing Tucker of inappropriate behavior during sessions that took place between 2012 and 2016. The allegations include claims that Tucker exposed himself, made inappropriate contact, and left bodily fluids on massage tables. Advertisement After the investigation had gotten underway, Tucker released a statement to address the allegations. "The allegations against me in The Baltimore Banner article about me are unequivocally false. Throughout my career as a professional athlete, I have always sought to conduct myself with the utmost professionalism," said Tucker. "I have never before been accused of misconduct of any kind, and I have never been accused of acting inappropriately in front of a massage therapist or during a massage therapy session or during other bodywork. I have never received any complaints from a massage therapist, have never been dismissed from a massage therapy or bodywork session, and have never been told that I was not welcome at any spa or other place of business." These accusations have cast a dark cloud over Tucker's otherwise stellar career. Tucker - maybe the best kicker of his generation - is coming off the worst year of his career. He made a disastrous 73.3 percent of his field goal attempts (especially compared to his all-time best career average of 89.1 percent). He also missed more field goals between 40 and 49 yards than he had in any other season. Advertisement With the 10th pick of the sixth round of the NFL Draft, the Ravens took Arizona kicker Tyler Loop, who is expected to be Tucker's replacement this season. 2025 NBA Draft grades: Second-round pick-by-pick analysis

It's Day 2 of the 2025 NBA Draft. Let's hand out grades for every second-round pick. Also, click here for first-round grades. Grade: A- Fleming is a hustler who drains spot-up jumpers and brings energy on defense, swatting shots and snagging boards. But he has some real warts as a ball-handler with a lack of experience against high-level competition. This matters less for the Suns, since he'll play in a role in which he just needs to do the simple stuff as a floor spacer rather than worry about shot creation. Grade: C+ Penda plays with a veteran's mind and a winning mentality, offering connective playmaking, switchable defense, and high-level feel. It's a bit of a risk for Orlando though since Penda needs to improve his jumper to shine in the long-term. But his unselfish game and defensive utility give him a strong foundation to build on. Grade: B Fans who happen to root for both Duke and Charlotte know that James has role-player qualities that can fit next to the Hornets' core pieces. James is a versatile defender who sets a tone with his hustle, and after years of laying bricks he worked hard to become a dead-eye, spot-up shooter. And he brings much more than shooting as a crafty playmaker who keeps the ball moving. But without the handle of a primary creator, it's critical he sustains his newfound success as a shooter. Grade: A A ton of teams were hoping Kalkbrenner would fall to them in the second round, but the Hornets land him here after trading away center Mark Williams during Day 1 of the draft. Kalkbrenner is a throwback 7-footer who owns the paint, swatting shots with his giant wingspan and dunking everything in sight. It's a bit strange he isn't a better rebounder. But as a super senior, he's also developed some sneaky passing and shooting skills that hint at higher upside, which could allow him to help facilitate for Charlotte's offensive engines. Grade: B+ Could Broome be the best backup center of the Joel Embiid era? Perhaps so, because he brings a ready-made game as an interior finisher with a passing feel and tone-setting defense. Though his jumper hasn't progressed as much as NBA teams would hope, Embiid's ability to space the floor could make for intriguing two-big lineups this season. In Philadelphia, it's more important that he progresses moving laterally on the perimeter. Grade: A 37. Detroit Pistons 38. Indiana Pacers 39. Toronto Raptors 40. New Orleans Pelicans 41. Phoenix Suns 42. Sacramento Kings 43. Washington Wizards 44. Oklahoma City Thunder 45. Los Angeles Lakers 46. Boston Celtics 47. Milwaukee Bucks 48. Memphis Grizzlies 49. Cleveland Cavaliers 50. New York Knicks 51. LA Clippers 52. Golden State Warriors 53. Utah Jazz 54. Indiana Pacers 55. Chicago Bulls 56. Memphis Grizzlies 57. Boston Celtics 58. Cleveland Cavaliers 59. Golden State Warriors
