Sadio Mane sends heartfelt message to Taiwo Awoniyi after horror injury

Daily Mirror16-05-2025

Liverpool icon Sadio Mane shared the dressing room with stricken Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi during his time at Anfield and has sent him a lovely message as he recovers from injury
Sadio Mane has sent his prayers to former Liverpool team-mate Taiwo Awoniyi as he recovers from his horror injury. The Nottingham Forest star ruptured his intestine colliding with a goalpost against Leicester last weekend.
He initially attempted to play on but was forced off the pitch. Awoniyi's condition then deteriorated, needing to undergo emergency surgery before being put in an induced coma to aid his recovery.

Awoniyi has been brought out of that since. And as he begins his road to recovery, Mane posted a message of support to his ex-Anfield colleague.

Sharing an image of Awoniyi during his time on Merseyside, the now Al-Nassr forward wrote: 'Get well soon my brother! My prayers are with you and your family.'
Awoniyi, 27, spent six years at Anfield but failed to make a first-team appearance due to work permit issues. He was sent out on a series of loans before joining German side Union Berlin permanently.
25 goals in 65 appearances in the German capital convinced Forest to splash out a reported £17m on the striker in 2022 and he has gone on to score 19 goals for the Midlands side. Forest remain in the hunt for a Champions League berth, but defender Ola Aina has admitted the scary nature of Awoniyi's injury has impacted the dressing room.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Aina said: 'T is a very chilled guy. He doesn't like to get in the way. He goes about his own business but he can have fun as well.
'He has been in a couple of my [ YouTube ] videos but I know he doesn't like the cameras too much so I try not to put them in his face. I respect that about him. I have sent him a message of course. The whole team has.

'I have heard he is recovering well so hopefully we will hear from him soon. I knew he had hurt himself at the time but just didn't realise it was to that extent. I only really heard when everyone was sending messages on our players' group chat.
'We have a lot of things in common, me and Taiwo. Like our faith. But this is our team-mate and brother and someone we spend most of the year with day in day out. It affects everybody in some sort of way. All we can do is show our support and hopefully everything goes well for him now.'
Forest will be without Awoniyi as they attempt to seal a Champions League spot over the next fortnight. They take on West Ham on Sunday before a key clash with Chelsea on the final day.

Cesc Fabregas says he believes in ‘long-term' Como project amid links to Inter

The former Arsenal and Spain midfielder guided the team to an impressive 10th-place finish in their first top-flight campaign for 21 years helped by a club-record six-match winning run between April and May. A first season in senior management for the 38-year-old ended with his reputation as a head coach significantly raised, reportedly catching the eye of Inter who are without a manager after Simone Inzaghi departed this week in the aftermath of Saturday's 5-0 Champions League final loss to Paris St Germain. 'I really believe in the Como project,' Fabregas said at the SXSW event taking place in London, as reported by La Gazzetta della Sport. 'I started with this club because I was thinking about a long-term project. I don't want to finish my career at a club where there's a project for one or two years and then everything ends.' Fabregas, who is a minority shareholder of the club, joined Como as a player in 2022 and played out the final year of his career with the club in Serie B. After retiring the following summer, he joined the coaching staff, briefly taking charge of the first team as caretaker after boss Moreno Longo was sacked. Welsh coach Osian Roberts took charge for the remainder of the promotion-winning season while Fabregas completed his UEFA coaching qualifications, with the World Cup and Champions League-winner taking over last summer. ⚫🔵✍️#ForzaInter #WelcomePetar — Inter ⭐⭐ (@Inter_en) June 4, 2025 'I really believe in Como's long-term project,' he said. 'I arrived here as a player and I'm very, very happy because I get to work in the way that I want. We have the same goals and the same ambition. 'The President allows me to work the way I want, the way I see things. Fortunately, we share the same vision and have the same goal, which is to go as far as possible. 'We've become a really good team together, in a small town, in a small club but with big, very big ambitions for the future.' Inter meanwhile have signed Croatia international Petar Sucic from Dinamo Zagreb. The midfielder, who has seven international caps, played last season on loan at Bosnian side Zrinjski Mostar.

Leny Yoro names shock ex-Arsenal star as 'toughest striker' he's ever faced

Manchester United defender Leny Yoro has picked out ex-Arsenal star Alexandre Lacazette as the toughest striker he has ever come up against on a football pitch. Though still in the infancy of his career, Yoro has already locked horns with some of the finest attacking talent in world football, including Erling Haaland, Alexander Isak and Kylian Mbappe. And given the French centre-back is not even out of his teens, there are sure to be many, many more daunting challenges ahead of him over the coming years. Yoro could be forgiven for wanting United to bring in a high-class centre-forward of their own this summer, with both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee badly struggling to live up to expectations at Old Trafford. Prior to his £52million transfer move from Lille to United, the 19-year-old only had one full season under his belt in senior football with his boyhood team. But the second leg of United's Europa League quarter-final with Lyon in April marked the fifth time that Yoro had gone toe to toe with Lacazette – and it's clear he rates his fellow countryman extremely highly. Lacazette has racked up four goals in his those five meetings with Yoro, leaving a strong impression on the youngster. 'The toughest striker [I've faced]? I would say Lacazette, even in Ligue 1. He was very good,' Yoro told Rising Ballers. 'He's got a lot of experience because he played Premier League and Ligue 1. 'And his positioning in games, sometimes it's difficult for defenders, always in your back.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Yoro opened his account for United in the first leg of the side's quarter-final with Lyon, directing home Manuel Ugarte's scruffy effort with a precise header from close range. 'Honestly, I was not ready to score!' Yoro joked when looking back on the 2-2 draw at Lyon's Groupama Stadium. 'But I didn't want to celebrate because I wanted to play quick to try to win the game. 'I was really happy because my family was there and after the game, they said they were really happy for me and proud so it was good.' Going forward, Yoro is keen to add another string to his bow by bringing more 'aggression' to his game. Asked which area he most needs to improve, Yoro replied: 'Maybe I would say, sometimes, my aggression, being more aggressive. 'With the ball, I need to improve, of course, but I think I'm good so maybe, sometimes, I need to be more aggressive.' Yoro sees his long-term future at United and is desperate to start adding major trophies to his collection sooner rather than later. Quizzed on where he sees himself in five years' time, he responded: 'I hope I will stay here, for sure, in Manchester. '[Hopefully] I can say that I've won some titles and something has changed, maybe I have a child.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Russell Martin strikes next Rangers manager agreement as appointment timeline and backroom staff revealed

Record Sport can reveal that the former Southampton boss has agreed in principle to become Philippe Clement's successor Russell Martin's imminent return to Ibrox has been agreed in principle and is expected to be confirmed in the next 48 hours. Record Sport understands Martin's appointment as Philippe Clement's successor is now in the final stages pending contracts being rubber stamped and the make-up of his backroom team approved, ratified and signed off by the Ibrox club's new board. ‌ It's understood Martin's long term assistant boss Matty Gill has been lined up to follow the 39-year-old north of the border, after the pair linked up together at MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton. ‌ And, as we revealed last week, former Rangers full-back Maurice Ross has also been earmarked for a key role in the coaching staff if Martin lands the top job, with further additions expected. Martin and his men have emerged as the clear front-runners following a major plot twist in talks with rival target Davide Ancelotti. It's understood, over the last two days, Ancelloti has suddenly appeared to cool on the prospect of making the move from Madrid to Glasgow's south side. Ancelotti had seemed in pole position after holding a series of discussions with sporting director Kevin Thelwell and Gretar Steinsson, football adviser to the San Francisco 49ers. It's understood incoming chairman Andrew Cavenagh has also been involved in the final stages of those talks. But sources in Milan have now confirmed to Record Sport that Ancelotti's camp began to stall on a move to Ibrox at the start of this week. ‌ The timing seems significant as it coincides with dramatic developments at the San Siro and the news that Simone Inzaghi is on the verge of quitting Champions League runners-up Inter Milan for a lucrative move to Saudi outfit Al-Hilal. Inter immediately set their sights on Como boss Cesc Fabregas to fill Inzaghi's shoes - and that appears to have been a game changer in terms of Ancelotti's own position. ‌ The 36-year-old - who is ready to take his first steps into management after following his father Carlo around some of the greatest clubs in Europe - had initially been linked with Como when it seemed Fabregas might be on his way to Bayer Leverkusen. Reports of Como's interest in Ancelotti began to circulate almost immediately after it was leaked to media outlets in Madrid that Rangers were also involved in advanced discussions with Ancelotti Jr. But within days it was confirmed that the Bundesliga big guns had turned to former Manchester United flop Erik ten Hag to replace Xabi Alonso - who has taken over from Ancelotti Snr at the Bernabeu. ‌ Those managerial dominoes appeared to fall in favour of Rangers and their pursuit of the young Ancelotti. But that all changed again over the weekend when Como learned of Inter's interest in Fabregas. Martin, meanwhile, has been holding off on accepting an offer to take over from Ruud van Nistlerooy at Leicester City while the uncertainty has played out across the continent. ‌ And he now appears to be on the brink of turning his back on the King Power to finalise a move to Rangers instead. Ibrox sources have remained adamant throughout that the process is not yet complete and that further interviews have been scheduled for this week. But that messaging has begun to soften. And with Martin apparently emerging as the last man standing and a financial agreement already thrashed out, the former Scotland international could be in place at Auchenhowie before the weekend. Rangers players will report back to the club's Auchenhowie HQ on June 23 to begin pre-season preparations which means Cavenagh's new look regime is already racing against the clock ahead of a major squad rebuild and the beginning of the next campaign.
