Army chief in Kashmir, ops intensified with search on for 7 LeT terrorists

The Print25-04-2025

He will be meeting with the operational commanders on the field and review the inputs that have come in and the ongoing operation.
Defence sources told ThePrint that the first place the Army chief is visiting is the headquarters of the Victor Force in Awantipora, a Division of the Army in-charge of operations in South Kashmir.
New Delhi: Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi reached Srinagar Friday to take a full security review of the situation and the ongoing operation by the security forces to track down seven LeT terrorists believed to have been behind the Pahalgam terror attack, ThePrint has learnt.
Sources said that according to inputs received so far, it was a group of seven terrorists that carried out the attack, which included at least four Pakistani terrorists and three local terrorists.
As reported by ThePrint, four terrorists, including two Pakistani nationals, carried out the actually killings. It is now learnt that three other terrorists were positioned in the higher reaches on look out.
Sources said that two Sectors (Brigade level formation) of the Rashtriya Rifles have been put on the job to track down the group of terrorists besides those from the Special Forces.
On Friday Pakistan Army fired small arms at some places along the Line of Control (LoC), prompting an effective retaliation from the Indian Army. No casualties have been reported so far. Further details are awaited.
Sources said that the Army chief would be briefed on the status of operations and the security net that is being thrown.
According to them, the Army is for offensive operations and the overall security arrangements is the responsibility of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the CRPF which operates under it.
Gen Dwivedi will also visit the headquarters of the Chinar Corps in Srinagar where he will meet with the Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Suchendra Kumar and 15 corps Commander Lt Gen Prashant Srivastava.
At this meeting, a larger security review is to be undertaken and certain plans and changes will be discussed, the sources said.
At the All Party Meeting held Thursday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah admitted to lapses in the security apparatus.
Shah informed the meeting that local tour operators had opened up the route without informing the administration.
'The government told us that the route usually opens in June during the Amarnath Yatra as pilgrims headed to the holy site take rest at this location. However, this time, local tour operators started accepting bookings for tourists interested in going to the spot in April itself. From 20 April, tourists started going there. The local authorities were not aware of this development and, as a result, there was virtually no security deployment there,' Aam Aadmi Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh told ThePrint.
However, a Jammu and Kashmir Police post is located at the start of the route to the meadows, leading sources to question the claims of unawareness.
'It is sad that Jammu and Kashmir Police claim that they are not aware. Kashmir is a terror zone and police are saying they were unaware that hundreds of tourists were going to a particular zone,' a source said.
The J&K Police have released details about three of the four LeT terrorists.
On Thursday, J&K Police confirmed that one of the four terrorists involved in the Pahalgam massacre is Adil Hussain Thoker, as ThePrint reported the previous day. Thoker is a resident of Anantnag.
The other two terrorists identified by police are Ali Bhai alias Talha Bhai and Hashim Musa alias Suleman—both referred to as 'Pak national LeT' terrorists.

AI Watchdogs, CCTV Cameras And More: Every Terror Suspect Under Scanner On Amarnath Route

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir): Following the deadly terror attack Baisaran meadow on April 22, security forces have deployed facial recognition systems (FRS) along the Pahalgam route for the holy Amarnath Yatra 2025 to bolster pilgrim safety. 'This time, Amarnath Yatra has been made secure with the help of Artificial Intelligence. Every terrorist and terrorist aide will be under strict surveillance,' a top official said. The FRS identifies blacklisted individuals, including active terrorists and suspected overground workers, by analysing facial features from surveillance camera feeds and matching them against a centralised database. When a flagged person is detected, a hooter triggers an alert. It enables security personnel to take immediate action and neutralise the threat in real-time. A similar system is being installed along the Baltal route before the Yatra begins on July 3, 2025 and ends on August 9, 2025. The FRS has already been fully implemented along the 48-km traditional Pahalgam axis leading to the Amarnath cave shrine. The setup uses high-resolution surveillance cameras to capture facial data, which is cross-referenced with a database of persons of interest. The FRS likely employs advanced algorithms for facial feature mapping that can function under diverse lighting conditions and dense crowds. However, technical specifics remain classified for operational reasons. Security personnel have undergone specialised training to operate the FRS effectively and respond instantly to alerts. The Unified Command structure ensures seamless inter-agency coordination, with daily security briefings to assess and counter emerging threats. The Amarnath Yatra has been targeted in multiple terror attacks over the years – 30 pilgrims were killed in Pahalgam in 2000, 13 pilgrims died in Sheshnag in 2001, 9 were killed in Nunwan in 2002 and 8 pilgrims were killed in a bus attack near Anantnag in 2017. These repeated attacks have led to the adoption of AI-based surveillance technologies, including FRS, to prevent such tragedies from recurring. A top official stated, 'This is part of broader security measures, including RFID tagging and CCTV surveillance, prompted by the Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 people were killed.' Despite security concerns, over 3.5 lakh pilgrims have already registered for this year's pilgrimage. This reflects the unwavering religious devotion among followers of Lord Shiva, determined to complete the sacred journey.

"The corruption has gone too far. No thrones. No crowns. Pakistan COAS Asim Munir Invited To US Army Day Celebrations On June 14: Sources

Last Updated: During this visit, the US is likely to urge Pakistan to take action against terrorist groups targeting Afghanistan and India Pakistan's chief of army staff General Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah is scheduled to visit Washington DC, for the US Army Day celebrations on June 14, top intelligence sources have told CNN-News18. He will join other military leaders to commemorate the US Army's 250th anniversary. According to sources at the Pakistani Embassy in Washington DC, Munir is expected to arrive on June 12. During this visit, the US is likely to urge Pakistan to take action against terrorist groups targeting Afghanistan and India. The invitation appears to be linked more to the ongoing US-China rivalry and Pakistan's strategic importance than any stance against India. Due to Pakistan's close ties with China through initiatives like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the US harbours concerns about Pakistan's neutrality. Given the current geopolitical climate, the US is unlikely to view Pakistan as a credible or neutral mediator, said sources. This visit has also provoked political reactions within Pakistan, with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) planning protests against Munir's visit and labelling him a criminal. Pakistan is expected to seek assurances from the US regarding the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) operating from Afghanistan. Historically, Pakistan has sought US mediation on various issues, while India firmly rejects third-party involvement. The US prefers bilateral dialogue and is unlikely to alter its stance in favour of mediation, sources said. Pakistan recognises the potential debt trap associated with China and is eager to attract investment from other global powers. The country possesses valuable resources such as lithium, copper, gold, and rare earth minerals, for which it urgently requires investment. However, Pakistan is wary of potential colonisation similar to China's approach. The visit aims to manage the strained security relationship between the US and Pakistan. Pakistan will likely pursue its agenda on mediation in Kashmir and seek investments in its mineral resources. However, tangible outcomes may be limited, as India is unlikely to accede to any external demands regarding Kashmir. First Published: June 11, 2025, 02:37 IST
