The Pong-Pong Fruit in ‘White Lotus' Really Is That Dangerous

New York Times07-04-2025

This article contains spoilers for the Season 3 finale of 'The White Lotus.'
After the season finale of 'The White Lotus,' viewers may never look at a piña colada the same way again.
The long-teased murder-suicide fantasies of Timothy Ratliff (played by Jason Isaacs) come into sharp focus during the episode, as his family faces an uncertain future. He decides to poison them with the seeds of the pong-pong tree's fruit rather than face their disappointment over losing their fortune.
A hotel worker at the luxury Thai resort has already warned Ratliff of the tree's toxicity. By the season finale, the same worker inadvertently gives him instructions on how to extract poison from the seeds of what locals call the 'suicide tree.'
But what's the real story behind the pong-pong?
What is pong-pong fruit?
Pong-pong trees, or Cerbera odollam, are indigenous to South and Southeast Asia, tropical Pacific islands and parts of Australia, according to the National Tropical Botanical Garden, a research garden in Hawaii.
The fruit is two to four inches in length and turns from green to red as it ripens. Ty Matejowsky, the chairman of the anthropology department at the University of Central Florida who specializes in cultural anthropology and food studies, said the fruit's cardiotoxin is concentrated in the seeds' kernels, 'almost like a peach pit.'

Missoma sale 2025: Shop Doechii and Bella Hadid's fave jewellery brand

The Missoma summer sale is an event we magpies like to mark in our diaries. Because if there's one thing we love more than shopping for new jewellery, it's shopping for new jewellery when there's a sale on. And while we're partial to a Van Cleef lookalike or a Cartier watch alternative, all eyes are on one of our fave affordable jewellery brands and the mega discounts available RN. Coming at you with the best discounts outside of Black Friday, Missoma's summer sale is offering up to 50% off (yep, you read that right) from 9 June to 2 July, so there's no time to dilly-dally, when stock is sold out, it's gone 4eva. 💔 When it comes to spending your hard-earned coin, you can rest assured that you're getting the best quality from Missoma. Designed exclusively in-house at their London studio, each piece is handmade by skilled artisans using responsibly sourced and 100% recycled 14ct and 18ct gold vermeil and sterling silver.'Whether you're getting on a flight or spending the summer staycation-ing, we've got you covered,' Marisa Hordern, founder and creative director at Missoma, said in a press statement. Shop the Missoma sale now Considering we're your besties, we couldn't let you scroll aimlessly through the site looking for the best Missoma pieces to shop. Instead, we've curated this edit of our fave pieces in the sale, plus, the most iconic celeb-approved pieces that you can bag for a hefty discount. Don't say we don't put you on. As seen on Bella Hadid. As seen on Selena Gomez. As seen on Simone Ashley. Now, we love Missoma for its tarnish-free options, incredible Bottega-inspired drop earrings and super-speedy delivery. But we'd be lying if we said the gaggle of VIP faces dripping in the brand hasn't won us over. The Swamp Princess – Doechii – was spotted wearing Missoma on the streets of NYC in June. And if this stylish queen is sporting something, we've got it on good authority that it's fashion girl-approved. As seen on Bella Hadid. While Doechii chose a gorge pair of Lucy Williams Gold Plated Entwined Hoops to top off her playfully tailored look, Bella Hadid was recently snapped in the Square Pearl Statement Earrings – an apt choice for anyone looking to invest in some timeless studs. As seen in The White Lotus. Although gold often complements warm-toned skin and olive undertones, I found that – after getting a personal colour analysis – my cool undertones actually make me much more suited to platinum and silver jewellery. I'm hoping to nab the Savi Dome Mini Hoop Earrings in the sale. The right necklace can take your fit from basic to brilliant in a matter of seconds, which is why you should never sleep on a versatile chain or head-turning pendant necklace. Whether you like a nice lil stack or love to go all out with an eye-catching, gem-studded cocktail ring, Missoma is here to make sure your fingers get the love they deserve. A diamond tennis bracelet is a classic choice that also makes for a great gift. It's a luxe finishing touch for a wedding guest outfit, pretty summer dress, or cocktail look. If you're more of a bangle girlie, DW, there's options – the Savi Singature Hinged Bangle in Mixed Metal is top of my list. Follow Shadé on Instagram. King Charles Makes Major Change to Trooping the Colour Tradition, Signaling the End of an Era

King Charles will be celebrated at Trooping the Colour on June 14—the annual birthday parade for the monarch. 2025 will mark the King's third birthday parade since taking the throne on September 8, 2022. Amid his ongoing cancer treatment, Charles will no longer ride in the parade on horseback, and will instead ride in a carriage alongside wife Queen he continues treatment for cancer following his 2024 diagnosis, King Charles will make a permanent change for Trooping the Colour, the annual birthday parade held in his honor every June. The King—who The Times noted is 'one of the royal family's most accomplished equestrians'—will no longer ride on horseback at the yearly event, with the outlet reporting he 'has hung up his riding boots.' Instead, Charles will travel in a carriage for the procession from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade and back at the event, which this year is on June 14. 'He is not expected to ride at the parade again,' the publication added. The King rode on horseback in 2023 for his first Trooping the Colour as sovereign; his mother, Queen Elizabeth, hadn't ridden on horseback since 1986, the year she turned 60 years old. Afterwards, the Queen traveled via carriage from 1987 until her last Trooping the Colour in 2022, which also doubled as her Platinum Jubilee celebrating her historic 70 years on the throne. Following his cancer diagnosis—which was announced publicly on February 5 of last year—the King rode in a carriage; this announcement makes that change permanent, it seems. Meanwhile, the King's sister Princess Anne—who turns 75 years old in August—plans to ride on horseback this year alongside Prince William. This will be the Princess Royal's first public appearance on horseback since her accident involving a horse last June that left her with a concussion and in the hospital for five days. The Telegraph reported that Charles' weekly cancer treatment—while it continues in a 'very positive direction, as reflected with the very full national and international diary program,' as the palace put it—will likely last for the remainder of his life. According to the outlet, it is understood that 'he may die 'with' cancer, but not 'of' cancer,' the publication reported, with The Telegraph adding that Charles and his wife Queen Camilla are likely to never move into Buckingham Palace following the completion of its restoration in 2027. That said, there's hope that the King isn't going anywhere anytime soon—tentative planning has begun for his 80th birthday celebrations, which will take place in 2028, and there's even talk that Charles might reunite with his son Prince Harry when the Duke of Sussex travels to the U.K. for the 2027 Invictus Games, which will take place in Birmingham, England. Lars von Trier threw water at Bryce Dallas Howard and insulted her father

Lars von Trier threw a glass of water in Bryce Dallas Howard's face and insulted her father because he wanted to see her "angry face". The 'Jurassic World' actress worked with the director on 2005 film 'Manderlay' and she revealed her first meeting with the moviemaker on the set in Norway came as a bit of a shock as she was subjected to a barrage of insults and a jibe about her director dad Ron Howard. Bryce told The Times newspaper: "He started insulting me: 'Your father's a terrible filmmaker.' I went: 'Lars, what are you trying to see?' and he said: 'Your angry face. I don't know what it looks like'." She went on to reveal von Trier then threw a glass of water in her face and Bryce responded by doing the same to him. The actress added: "So I threw a glass of water in his face. He goes: 'Why did you do that?' and got up and left. That was my introduction to the Lars von Trier experience." However, Bryce is adamant she wasn't upset by the encounter. She explained: "It wasn't like I went to my room and cried or anything. I was sort of delighted by it." Bryce's dad started as an actor before moving behind the camera and she hopes to do more directing in the future, but she will never give up acting completely like he did. She added: "I don't want to let go of acting as my dad has done. That would be really heartbreaking because I learn so much being on a set. I have so much fun.' Bryce is close to her filmmaker father and he recently shared a sweet tribute to her on Instagram to mark her 44th birthday earlier this year - declaring she has far exceeded the family's expectations with her huge success in the movie business. Ron wrote: "Happy Birthday, Daughter! You've always made your mom and me happy and incredibly proud. "But the scope of what you've achieved with your family and career and the future you are building exceeds our wildest hopes from back when you were this adorable kid we loved so much." It came just a day after Bryce shared her own tribute to her dad on his birthday, writing in a post on Instagram: "I love you so much Dad, more than words can say."
