
Cars' Forward Blind Zones Are Worse Now Than 25 Years Ago: Study
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has developed a new way to measure a driver's outward visibility from a vehicle.
DOT researchers used the method to examine the change in what a driver can see out of multiple generations of popular vehicles produced over the past 25 years.
The results show that, for the selected vehicles (Chevrolet Suburban, Ford F-150, Honda Accord and CR-V, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Toyota Camry), the outward view has decreased.
When we review a new vehicle, we pay close attention to how easy or difficult it is to see out of, and that information makes it into everything from road tests to comparisons to our buyer's guide. But even our exhaustive test regimen doesn't spit out a quantifiable value for outward visibility. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has a new method to look at what drivers can't look at, and the results of a DOT study using the method suggest that things have gotten worse over the past quarter-century.
The IIHS came up with an easier way to repeatably measure and compare what a driver can see in a 180-degree forward-facing view out of a vehicle. The method involves a special portable camera rig that captures a driver's view. That image is then processed to determine what percentage of the road in a specified radius is visible, and what's blocked by the vehicle's A-pillars, hood, and side-view mirrors. The result is an aerial view of where the driver's vision is obstructed—the blind zone—as well as a percentage of the surrounding area that's visible.
Previously, this task required either access to engineering drawings or a specially prepared area in which to take measurements. Researchers can also use lasers for this, but, according to the IIHS, that method doesn't capture zones blocked by side-view mirrors or the wide bases of a vehicle's A-pillars.
For the study, researchers with the U.S. Department of Transportation's Volpe Center used the IIHS method to examine every generation of some popular vehicles sold between 1997 and 2023. The models chosen were the Chevrolet Suburban, the Ford F-150, the Honda Accord, the Honda CR-V, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the Toyota Camry. The analysis measured how much of a 10-meter radius is visible to a driver; this distance was chosen because that's approximately how much space a driver needs to react and stop when traveling at 10 mph. The study also measured visibility between 10 and 20 meters from the vehicle.
The biggest model-specific difference was observed with the Honda CR-V. In a 1997 model, the researchers measured 68 percent visibility, while the 2022 came in at just 28 percent. In a 2000 Suburban, the study measured 56 percent visible area within the 10-meter radius, but in a 2023 model it was down to 28 percent. The study concluded that higher hoods on newer versions of both models had the biggest impact on outward visibility.
The F-150 started out with low visibility (43% for a 1997 model) and also declined (36% for the 2015 version). The two sedans in the study saw the least regression: A 2003 Accord was measured at 65 percent visibility, with the 2023 close behind at 60 percent, and the Camry went from 61 percent for the 2007 model to 57 percent for a 2023. Results for visibility between 10 and 20 meters were mixed, with some improving and others decreasing over subsequent generations.
The study also notes that, during the same time period, pedestrian and bicyclist deaths on U.S. roads increased dramatically—37 and 42 percent, respectively.
While this is not conclusive evidence across the industry, the results from these representative vehicles suggest an overall decline in outward frontal visibility. There's likely at least some causation with that correlation, even when you consider the addition of features such as automated emergency braking that are meant to intervene and prevent such collisions.
Anecdotally, it's pretty clear that it has gotten harder to see out of new vehicles over the years. We're now at a point where technology like digital rearview cameras is augmenting—or, in the case of the rear-window-less Polestar 4, replacing—what a driver can see from the helm. This, along with features such as blind-spot monitoring, seems to have emboldened designers to further shrink the glass on a vehicle and worry less about what parts of the body obstruct the outward view.
While we welcome this new measurement technique developed by the IIHS, it's interesting to note that some of the group's own ratings may also play into this reduction in forward view. Enlarging A-pillars, along with increased use of high-strength steel, is one way automakers improve a vehicle's crash performance, especially in rollover testing. Those changes, of course, have the negative downstream effect of obstructing a driver's vision.
The Volpe Center researchers conclude that this new measurement method shows promise, and they believe the trend of worsening outward visibility warrants further study.

Is Ford Blue Fueling Model e's Future in the Changing Auto Landscape?
The automotive giant, Ford Motor Company F, is steadfast in its race toward relevance. As the company electrifies its product lineup through the Model e segment, its legacy Ford Blue segment is the cash engine behind it. The traditional internal combustion engine business has iconic models like the F-Series, Ranger, Maverick, Bronco, Explorer and Mustang under its name. In the last reported quarter, total wholesale volume in the Ford Blue segment decreased 6% year over year to 588,000 units but exceeded our expectation of 524,000 units. Ford Blue segment had logged revenues of $21 billion (with an EBIT of $96 million) compared to Ford Pro and Model e's revenues of $15.2 billion and $1.2 billion, respectively, in the first quarter of 2025. Model e remained a loss-making segment. As Model e's ambitions require capital-intensive investments, Ford primarily funds those with the profitability from its ICE vehicles. The massive Ford Blue segment continues to generate profits to balance off losses, maintain customer loyalty with legacy models, leverage dealer networks and lead through innovation in hybrid models. This would act as a strong foundation for Model e to build on its EV and software-led business. Ford expects to sell fewer ICE vehicles compared to last year. Additionally, a shift in product mix and foreign exchange headwinds will drag profits. Despite that, it is expected to sufficiently do well as a bridge to EVs' long-term growth strategy. General Motors Company (GM), Ford's closest rival, boasts of 17.2% U.S. auto market share. General Motors has lowered its full-year 2025 guidance, owing to an estimated $4-$5 million exposure to the impacts of auto tariffs. However, it is advancing well in its electrification journey. In the final quarter of 2024, General Motors' EV portfolio became 'variable profit positive' with plans to cut EV-related losses further this year. On the other hand, the company continues to invest heavily in expanding ICE production at the U.S. plants. Stellantis N.V. (STLA), another multinational automaker, has plans to reassess its capital spending strategies. The company has also brought down its EV production and is bringing its ICE back. Stellantis notices that U.S. markets are still demanding the traditional gas-powered muscle cars. EVs are gaining traction but will be put in the backseat for now. Cory McClenathan Not Closing Door on Return to NHRA Competition
All-time racing great Cory McClenathan is still active in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series. Sure, the 34-time NHRA Top Fuel winner and four-time season championship runner-up hasn't raced in the category since losing his ride in 2020. And, sure, McClenathan is 62 years old. But that doesn't mean he doesn't still check his phone and his emails for a call asking him to get back in the game. These days, the closest McClenathan gets to the cockpit of a race car is through a five-year partnership of his current business—Reno, Nev.-based RevChem Composites—with Kalitta Motorsports. McClenathan was at Kalitta HQ in Ypsilanti, Mich., this past Thursday to participate in a Business-to-Business Summit with fellow Kalitta Motorsports Partners. "I last raced in 2020 during Covid," McClenathan said. "We did like five races at Indianapolis that year." The two-time U.S. Nationals winner would love to get back out there. "I try to keep my ties," McClenathan said. "It's not like I'm too old to drive a race car. If something was to come up, I think I'd do it. But really, I got tired of chasing the money myself, trying to do it all myself." In a perfect world, McClenathan says he'd love to find a partial-season ride. He's not interested in going to a new team or helping a fledgling team figure it out. "At first, I was going to people who had new teams," he said. "Let's get the car figured out. A guy like me could help. That got old after a while, and I finally decided that unless I'm doing three or four of five races in a row or in a year type of thing, I wasn't interested. "There's no way I could go back to it full time. I have a house, I have a job, I have a daughter, my mother. If the right thing came along and came up and it was the right deal, I'd take it. "I still have the competitive spirit. I can still drive one. I'm not too heavy to get into a dragster. So, for now, the drag racing fix will have to be as a business partner to Kalitta Motorsports. "I enjoy this," he said. "I can see my friends. I get to see all the sponsors. Scott Kalitta and I were really good friends. I have a lot of friends here." McClenathan says that if he did get another opportunity, there's still room for guys like him in the sport. "Kids with money, kids with parents with a lot of money, are the ones coming into the sport," he said. "Some eventually end up getting sponsors. Fans like seeing some of the good rookie drivers that have come up, but for the most part, a lot of people miss us old guys." And McClenathan misses the action. "I got replaced by a guy—Spencer Massey—that could leave the starting line and who had money in his pocket," McClenathan said. " I'm one of those guys who could be back at any time if the right thing happened. "It's nice to see guys like me come back for five, six races. It brings my old fans back and it gives the NHRA something to talk about." In the meantime, McClenathan keeps checking those messages. "Always, always," he said. "I never let that go."

How Costco's electric vehicle charging experiment could be a game changer for American drivers
Costco is one of the few retailers in America where consumers can get an affordable slice of pizza just a few steps away from furniture, produce, and technology. Costco warehouses are essentially one-stop shops for everything folks need for their daily lives. The retailer even offers gasoline at certain locations (via their gas stations). Transportation is evolving and Costco plans to evolve with it, according to Electrek, an electric vehicle news site. The retailer will host fast EV charging stalls from Electric Era (an EV charging company) at a North Port, Florida location. Here's how this collaboration could change the way American Costco shoppers charge their EVs forever. Solving the electric vehicle charging infrastructure issue in America may seem like rocket science. That's why a team of former SpaceX engineers − the founders of Electric Era − might be the ideal group to tackle the lack of reliable fast EV chargers in the country. Electric Era provided Costco with six EV fast charging stalls in just 54 days. These charging stalls are capable of recharging a battery by up to 80% of its total capacity in 20 to 60 minutes. So, folks using these chargers could theoretically park their vehicles in a Costco parking lot, shop, and return to an EV that has a replenished battery. Positive non-Tesla charging experiences can be few and far between as electric vehicle market share drastically outpaces the amount of available reliable chargers in America. Over 1 million new electric vehicles were registered in 2024 according to Experian. Several automakers including General Motors are seeing record EV sales in 2025. Costco's experiment at its North Port, Florida location could lead to future partnerships with Electric Era on similar charging stations across its retail locations. There are at least 531 Costco warehouses in the U.S. according to a 2023 article by Visual Capitalist. Adding charging stations to Costco parking lots nationally could result in thousands of new fast charging stalls in America for EV owners (independent from any federal investments or incentives). Electric vehicle charging is on its way to becoming more ubiquitous, but it still has a long way to go. Part of the reason charging is such a headache to many electric vehicle owners is the lack of fast charging stalls and stations. Level 2 chargers can take hours to provide an EV with enough power to make a charging session beneficial to drivers. Level 3 charging stations are the most convenient types of charging stations thus far. They can provide more kilowatts than weaker Level 2 charging stations, providing significant battery percentage gains in under an hour. In comparison, it can take six to eight hours for a Level 2 charging stall to provide an adequate charging session. Tesla has partnered with several automakers including Hyundai, Kia, General Motors, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Honda, Acura, and more to allow Tesla Supercharger compatibility via adapters (that may be built into charging stalls). This partnership is good for non-Tesla EV owners, but it means more Tesla superchargers are being used than ever before, increasing the demand. If you don't have access to a reliable home charging system, electric vehicle charging can be anything but easy. EV owners without a home charger have to rely on public charging stations, which can be crowded and problematic. There are peak charging times where local public charging stations can amass crowds patiently waiting for their turns at the stall. Typically, there are only four to six stalls at a station. Charging stalls can be slower during peak hours and in extreme weather conditions. If Costco chooses to sign additional contracts with Electric Era, the retailer's parking lots could become extremely beneficial to customers and electric vehicle owners. A weekly Costco run could also be a weekly charging session, making a process that can be frustrating part of a weekly shopping routine.
