Insider says ex-Steelers QB Russell Wilson expected to lose Giants starting role

USA Today4 hours ago

Russell Wilson can't catch a break.
After serving as the quarterback scapegoat for the Steelers' offensive struggles at the end of last season, Wilson is reportedly at risk of eventually losing the Giants' starting QB role to rookie Jaxson Dart.
On a recent episode of The Insiders, Ian Rapoport acknowledged that while Wilson is currently the starter, he predicted Dart will eventually take the QB1 reins:
"You listen to everything Brian Daboll says, you get an understanding of how far along Jaxson Dart is, and where you think he's going to go," Rapoport said. "It's clearly a matter of when, not if. And I'm really curious to see how good this Giants team could be, whenever they deem Jaxson Dart ready."
One could argue that Wilson wasn't to blame for the Steelers' offensive issues in 2024 — as the late-season collapse falls more on the shoulders of scheme predictability and the lack of WR2 production.
Still, the situation spells bad news for the former Steelers quarterback, who was hoping for a potential career resurgence in New York this season.

Giants Receive Justin Verlander News After Red Sox Game

Giants Receive Justin Verlander News After Red Sox Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The San Francisco Giants continue to battle for playoff positioning with a 44-34 record, sitting 3.5 games behind the NL West-leading Dodgers and holding sole possession of the league's second Wild Card spot. Advertisement After winning two out of three games in a series against the Boston Red Sox this past weekend, they now aim to build on that momentum as they head into a series against the last-place Miami Marlins, who currently stand at 31-45. Much of the Giants' success this season has been driven by a consistently strong pitching staff. Ranked third in ERA at 3.26, the staff has also been exceptional in limiting power, giving up only 62 home runs—the second fewest in the league—and striking out 8.76 batters every nine innings. San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Justin Verlander (35)Neville E. Guard-Imagn Images Yet even as the rotation shines, offseason signing Justin Verlander has encountered his own set of challenges. Verlander recently returned to the mound last Wednesday after suffering a strained right pectoral, and in that outing, he allowed 4 runs in 4.2 innings—giving up 7 hits and 1 walk—and took the loss. Advertisement The veteran right-handed starter inked a one-year, $15 million deal heading into his age-42 season this offseason. In a recent roster move, the Giants optioned Tyler Fitzgerald to Triple-A as Verlander returned from paternity leave. In his 11 starts with the Giants this season, he is 0-4 with a 4.45 ERA, allowing 9.4 hits and posting 7.5 strikeouts per nine innings—numbers that fall well below his established career norms. Despite a career that includes an MVP, Triple Crown, three Cy Young Awards, nine All-Star selections, and two World Series championships over 20 seasons, his current performance thus far has been underwhelming and he will look to bounce back in his next scheduled start against Miami. Russell Wilson says he signed with Giants because of Malik Nabers

Russell Wilson did not have many options in free agency. According to the 10-time Pro Bowler, though, it was the presence of wide receiver Malik Nabers that prompted Wilson to sign with the Giants. 'I came here because of him,' Wilson said during the Fanatics Fest over the weekend, via Anthony Rivardo of Empire Sports Media. 'I really wanted to play with someone who is special like him.' Wilson played with three 1,000-yard receivers in Seattle in Tyler Lockett, Doug Baldwin and DK Metcalf. Metcalf caught 83 passes for 1,303 yards for the Seahawks in 2020, Wilson's next-to-last season in Seattle. Nabers had 1,204 yards as a rookie despite missing two games and playing with three different starting quarterbacks. He proved in his first season that he will get his yards no matter who the quarterback is. The question is: Who will throw to Nabers this year? Wilson is the favorite to start the season, but it won't be a surprise if rookie Jaxson Dart takes over the starting job at some point. Wilson will have to beat out Jameis Winston and Dart in training camp, and then, if he does that, he will have pressure to win to keep the job. The Giants start the season at Washington and at Dallas before hosting the Chiefs and Chargers. It is not going to be be easy for Wilson, but it will help to have Nabers.

A 6-foot-2, 225 pound linebacker from Steelton, Pennsylvania, attending Steelton-Highspire High School, Ward-McMullen has yet to be ranked. Michigan State has gone into Rossi's home state to give Ward-McMullen his first division one offer. Minnesota has also shown interest in the 2027 linebacker prospect.
