Fire at W.B. Mason warehouse in Boston causes $1 million in damages
A fire that broke out at the W.B. Mason warehouse in Boston on Sunday morning caused an estimated $1 million in damages.
The costly fire broke out at around 10:30 a.m. on May 4, according to the Boston Fire Department.
Heavy smoke could be seen coming from the W.B. Mason warehouse — located at 647 Summer St. in South Boston — when firefighters arrived, and a second alarm was ordered, the department said.
Firefighters attacked the blaze inside the building and outside with ladders, Boston Fire Deputy Chief Martin McCormack said. No injuries were reported from the incident.
However, damages from the fire were at an estimated $1 million, McCormack said.
The department began to clear the scene by noon, with some firefighters remaining on the scene to monitor hotspots. The investigation into the cause of the fire was ongoing as of Sunday afternoon.

Mass. lottery drawing postponed after numerous balls fell out of machine
Prior to a Mass Cash drawing Thursday, a door on the machine was left open, allowing numerous balls to fall out. The game, which has drawings twice per day, had to be postponed. It was for the 9 p.m. drawing. The door that was left open was on the Mass Cash drawing machine's mixing chamber. The balls fell out prior to the first number being drawn, which made the entire drawing invalid, lottery officials said. 'The Lottery is committed to ensuring the integrity of our games,' said Lottery Director Mark William Bracken. 'Drawings are conducted twice a day, 365 days a year and while we strive for perfection, we're all human and mistakes can happen. We apologize to our players for the inconvenience and appreciated their patience as we worked diligently to resolve the situation.' Instead, the drawing happened at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday. The winning numbers for the Mass Cash drawing on Thursday are 6-15-22-28-30. Mass. State Lottery winner: Mobil gas station sells $100,000 ticket Mass. Padres Held Call With Red Sox Regarding Jarren Duran Trade, Second MLB Insider Reports
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Since Monday, Boston Red Sox fans have been all abuzz with a rumor that the San Diego Padres are attempting to make a trade for Boston's 2024 All-Star outfielder Jarren Duran. The buzz started with a report by Padres correspondent Dennis Lin of The Athletic, who noted that San Diego had first tried to get Duran prior to last season. With an offensive disaster in left field — Padres left fielders rank second-worst in MLB with a combined .533 OPS — San Diego president of baseball operations A.J. Preller is once again setting his sights on Duran as he searches for some way to improve the position, Lin reported. MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN - MAY 28: Jarren Duran #16 of the Boston Red Sox poses for a photo with the Wally Home Run Head in the dugout before a game against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on May 28, 2025. More Maddie Malhotra/BostonThe following day, a veteran Boston baseball writer said he had independently confirmed with "an industry source" that Preller did, in fact, call the Red Sox to inquire about Duran's availability. But that writer, MassLive Red Sox columnist Sean McAdam, went on to say that while the Padres' interest in Duran is real, the Red Sox appear far less enthusiastic about parting with their 28-year-old leadoff hitter, who still has three years of team control after this one remaining before he hits free agency. More MLB: Watch: Tempers Flare Between Red Sox, Angels as Multiple Players, Coaches Involved "While Duran may represent the perfect fit for the Padres — relatively affordable for a team currently not in position to add much to its payroll," McAdam wrote, "the same can't be said from the Red Sox' perspective." Duran through the first two months of the season has lagged somewhat behind his pace from last season, particularly in May when the entire Red Sox team hit a slump and won just 11 games while dropping 17. Last season, Duran posted an OPS of .724 in April and March, and .767 in May. This year, those numbers are .762 and then, in May, .697. But it was in June that Duran really started to put together his All-Star credentials last year, hitting .360 with seven home runs, nine stolen bases and a sparkling 1.063 OPS for the month. While this June is just getting started, Duran through the first three games was showing signs that this is indeed his favorite month, with five hits including four doubles in 15 plate appearances, and a .933 OPS. It would not be surprising, then, if the Red Sox wanted to wait a few weeks to evaluate what Duran's performance actually looks like this season, before deciding whether to part ways with him. Red Sox Urged to Trade Pitcher Lucas Giolito Ahead of Deadline
Red Sox Urged to Trade Pitcher Lucas Giolito Ahead of Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox, currently facing a below .500 record and trailing by eight games in the American League East, are considering the possibility of becoming sellers as the 2025 season progresses. Amid speculation surrounding Jaren Duran's availability following a report by Dennis Lin of The Athletic, CBS Sports' Matt Snyder suggests that the Red Sox could potentially trade starting pitcher Lucas Giolito before the July 31 deadline. Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Lucas Giolito (54) pitches against the Atlanta Braves during the first inning at Truist Zanine-Imagn Images After missing the entire 2024 season following Tommy John Surgery, Giolito has made six starts in 2025. Although the optics do not look good, especially with a 4.78 ERA and pitching under five innings in half of his starts, Giolito may have more trade value than expected. Advertisement According to Baseball Savant, Giolito's fastball has crept back up to 93 mph, and his chase rate is 66 percent – the highest since 2017. As he continues to work his way back from injury, inconsistency is expected. Yet, the 30-year-old has given up one run or less in three of his last four starts. Giolito's season has been a mixed bag, but Snyder points to his recent track of success as a reason teams could take a flyer on the former first-round pick closer to the trade deadline. While Giolito will not be a hot commodity on the trade market, if healthy, he can provide much-needed depth to a rotation. A return to the A.L. Central should not be ruled out, with the Kansas City Royals ranking 15th in pitching, according to FanGraphs. The Arizona Diamondbacks could also take a long look at Giolito as the team tries to stay afloat with Corbin Burnes' health now uncertain in a loaded National League West. Giolito is under contract through the 2025 season and has a $14 million club vesting option for next season. When talking about a low-risk and under-the-radar arm, Giolito might fit the bill better than anyone approaching the trade deadline.
