I must start by saying I have always been a relatively easy-to-please traveller.
I love airline food and tiny containers of yoghurt and mini packets of nuts make my heart sing. I love little gins and small wine bottles. I love amenity kits. I adore travel-sized beauty products. I even really like eating overpriced airport food and drinking overpriced airport sparkling wine while waiting for a flight. It's all part of the experience and I can't get enough of it.
I also love in-flight entertainment and once upon a time would stop watching new movies in the weeks leading up to a flight so that I could enjoy them one after another on the plane. Long-haul flights? An excuse to watch all the movies, eat all the nuts and drink all the small gins. Bliss.
But times have changed, and these days I don't watch in-flight movies at all. I don't even bother to scroll through the selection – after all, with the streamers showing most movies before they've even left the cinema, I'm destined to be disappointed when the one new film I haven't seen stars a bunch of nobodies and a lesser Baldwin. Nothing against the Baldwins, but you know what I mean.
Today, I'm all about the box sets. Hear me out.
There will always be a TV series you have missed. I have every streaming service under the sun (and my accountant will tell you it's not a good use of my money) and yet I still somehow haven't seen season five of Breaking Bad or season three of Industry. A few hours in the air and you can knock those shows over before you can say 'another tiny gin and tonic, thank you'.
If that mid-air malaise kicks in, getting to the end of a 30-minute episode sets you up perfectly for an uncomfortable attempt at sleeping without having to stop mid-movie and remember where you got up to when you wake up approximately 40 minutes later.
You can smash through a box set of 13 half-hour eps in sixish hours and really feel like you've achieved something. I watched three seasons of Mad Men on a recent trip back from the UK – I felt like I worked at Sterling Cooper by the time I landed home in Sydney. I was au fait with how to make a great Martini, plus I had a list of retro furniture I wanted to buy and a desperate desire to join a typing pool. I also kept telling my husband I had Peggy on the line for him, which understandably confused him.
Watching a box set can become a fun sport as you try to finish an entire series before dinner service or get to a season finale before the lights come up.
True, there can be a panic when you're two eps away from the end and the captain suddenly tells the crew to prepare the cabin for landing, but that's what fast-forward is for, quite frankly, and a seasoned pro will never let it happen twice.
Look, I get it. If you've been wanting to watch The Joker since it came out, and there it is on your entertainment system just as the crew serve you your chicken and black bean sauce, then by all means go for gold. But if you're scrolling and no movies appeal, then just give one tiny box set a crack and see how good it feels. Polish off a series of Arrested Development, why don't you? Or watch the three hour-long eps of A Very Royal Scandal. Finally get stuck into Game of Thrones – that's a real hoot. Or come and join me in Don Draper's world.I promise you'll never look back. And those Martinis are to die for.

As reported by Code Sports, Gorry is the second Matildas' player to marry this week with Ellie Carpenter marrying Danielle van de Donk last weekend at an elaborate celebration in France. The couple, who went with public with their relationship in 2023, announced their engagement in January 2024. Carpenter, 25, took personal leave from the last Matildas window to put the finishing touches on the wedding. Matildas teammate Teagan Micah was part of the wedding party - making a quick trip to France after helping the Matildas beat Argentina earlier this month. Carpenter took to Instagram on Wednesday night to share two photos of the happy couple with the caption 'I choose you. I always choose you.' Both wore traditional white gowns. Paris Jackson gave a sarcastic 'f**k you' to the critics who are slamming her for scheduling a performance gig on the anniversary of father Michael Jackson's death. 'So, people are mad again,' the singer began a series of videos shared to her Instagram Stories on Friday. 'One of the tour dates I'm supposed to be going out on tour with Incubus and Manchester Orchestra happens to be June 25, which is a very negative anniversary for me in my life and my family.' On Wednesday, June 25, the musician is scheduled to perform at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. The date coincidentally falls on the 16-year anniversary of her dad's death. The pop icon died at age 50 on June 25, 2009 after suffering a heart attack caused by a drug overdose. 'So, what I guess I have to explain to these people is that when you're first of three, and you're not headlining these shows, you don't pick what date you perform or what time you go on stage to perform, or what city you perform in,' she continued, adding that the decision was made by the 'big boss' headliner. Never afraid to speak her mind or seek fair compensation for her work, Stone, 67, has been in the headlines for her criticism of Hollywood's pay gap. In a resurfaced 2023 interview with Deadline, Stone revealed how she is still offered far less money than her male co-stars, despite being a world-famous star. 'Thirty years ago, when I did Basic Instinct, Michael Douglas made $14 million and I made $500,000,' she told Deadline. 'Last year, there was a $100 million film being made by a studio, and the actor, who was new, was going to be paid something like $8 million or $9 million – someone we don't really know – and the studio offered me again $500,000 to be the female lead. In her autobiography, The Beauty Of Living Twice, she described the humiliation of the producer constantly calling her 'Karen' and being reminded she was the 'thirteenth choice' for the role of Catherine Tramell. Plus, Stone was duped into filming the movie's infamous leg-crossing scene, only discovering she had exposed herself at a screening. 'That was how I saw my vagina-shot for the first time, long after I'd been told: 'We can't see anything – I just need you to remove your panties, as the white is reflecting the light, so we know you have panties on,'' she wrote. 'Yes, there have been many points of view on this topic, but since I'm the one with the vagina in question, let me say: The other points of view are bullsh*t … It was me and my parts up there.' Describing herself as the 'the last of the sex symbols' in an interview with the BBC, Stone explained how her Basic Instinct fame has been a double-edged sword. On one hand it put her on the map in Hollywood and gave her a platform to raise money for AIDS charities, but it also came at a huge personal cost. Appearing on Bruce Bozzi's Table For Two podcast, Stone said her groundbreaking performance was weaponised against her during a custody battle with her ex-husband Phil Bronstein. 'The judge asked my child – my tiny little boy, 'Do you know your mother makes sex movies?' Like, this kind of abuse by the system – that I was considered what kind of parent I was, because I made that movie,' she reflected on losing custody of her eldest adopted son Roan. Far from being a sex siren, before Basic Instinct Stone insists she was 'still shy and introverted', and had to be coaxed into embracing a more sexually confident persona. 'Chuck, my manager at the time, had told me that no one would hire me because everyone said I wasn't sexy,' she wrote. 'I wasn't, as they liked to say in Hollywood at the time, 'f**kable'.' All that changed after Basic Instinct, and the line between Stone herself and her character became blurred for many in the industry. On Louis Theroux's podcast, Stone divulged that producer Robert Evans had asked her to have sex with her Sliver co-star Billy Baldwin to save the film from being a flop. '[Evans is] running around his office in his sunglasses, explaining to me that he slept with Ava Gardner and I should sleep with Billy Baldwin, because if I slept with Billy Baldwin, Billy Baldwin's performance would get better,' Stone remembered. 'And we needed Billy to get better in the movie, because that was the problem.' Stone refused. And was painted as the villain of the Sliver set by Evans, who told everyone she had the charm of a barracuda. It all became part of the enduring narrative that Stone is demanding. There was talk she'd pulled a gun on a Basic Instinct cameraman to warn: 'If I see one ounce of cellulite on the screen, you're a dead man.' Then she was painted as greedy for taking producers of the sequel to court. And in his gossip-laden autobiography, Red Carpets And Other Banana Skins, Rupert Everett moaned how Stone had kept cast and crew waiting on the set of their 2004 film A Different Loyalty. While unapologetic about being a strong woman in Hollywood, surviving a catastrophic stroke has given Stone fresh perspective. In a candid speech at the Women's Brain Health Initiative panel in 2017, she described how the life-threatening brain injury – which, she was told, only had a 1 per cent survival rate – made her re-evaluate a lot of things. 'I had lost my marriage, lost custody of my child, lost my place in line in the business, lost all my money because I was paying so many different things,' she detailed. '[I was] scraping by. I know what it's like to go through a situation where you are the top, top, top of your field, to [be] absolutely wiped out.'
