
Eco-Shop confident ahead of main market debut with RM420mil IPO
PETALING JAYA: Eco-Shop Marketing Bhd, which is en route to a listing on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd, remains confident in its prospects as underpinned by strong fundamentals despite uncertainties in market sentiment and the economy.
Eco-Shop said its initial public offering (IPO) is set to be the largest IPO to be launched in the past eight months, with an estimated RM419.87 million to be raised through the public issuance of 347 million new shares, based on the IPO retail price of RM1.21 per share.
The company will also offer 675.37 million shares to institutional investors at a price to be determined through a book-building process, it said in a statement.
The IPO has secured ten investors acting as cornerstone investors, who collectively subscribed for 90.91 million shares or 90.31 per cent of the institutional offering, the firm said.
Its chief executive officer and executive director Jessica Ng said that global market uncertainties have undoubtedly impacted both investor and consumer sentiment.
However, she said Eco-Shop remains optimistic that its value proposition is timely and well-suited to the current environment.
"Market forces are definitely one of the factors that we take into consideration (for listing).
"However, in this tough situation (with market uncertainties), a business model like ours is even more needed. (Looking at the US tariffs) and the rising cost, we are very ultra-affordable," she told reporters during the press conference today, in conjunction with the launch of the IPO prospectus.
She said Eco-Shop has consistently proven its business strength over the years, with strong sourcing capabilities and a competitive edge in bulk purchasing.
"We also have solid operations and infrastructure, and the ability to buy in volume and repackage products into smaller sizes," she added.
Eco-Shop's listing on the Main Market is set for May 23, 2025.
In response to a question about the product price hike, Ng explained that the rise from RM2.40 to RM2.60 (starting April 14) was due to the increase in the minimum wage, but she emphasised that most of its workers fall within the B40 income group.
"The majority of EcoShop employees are under the B40 group. So, we will have to make this adjustment to help our employees as well.
"While the basic pay is RM1,700, Eco-Shop pays a basic wage of RM1,800. So, the decision was made as we have to balance between taking care of the stakeholders in the right way," she said.
Meanwhile, commenting on the IPO proceeds utilisation, Ng said Eco-Shop has allocated RM56.27 million (13.4 per cent) to accelerate the expansion of its retail footprint nationwide and RM200 million (47.6 per cent) to expand its distribution centres.
She added that RM10.90 million (2.6 per cent) is earmarked for investment in information technology hardware and software, RM100 million (23.8 per cent) towards repaying bank borrowings, and RM52.70 million (12.6 per cent) for working capital purposes and defraying the costs of the IPO and listing.
"We are targeting 70 stores per year for the next five years, and currently, the under-penetrated market will be the Klang Valley as well as East Malaysia.

SELANGOR is experiencing a shift in its tourism landscape as international visitors begin to form a larger part of the state's tourist arrivals. Held at Terminal Sekinchan, the festival was the first of its kind in Malaysia and had been held in support of Visit Selangor Year (VSY) 2025. The second day offered even more attractions, which included a padi field run, free health screenings and environmental volunteer activities. The festival was part of the VSY2025 campaign that aimed to draw 8 million visitors and generate RM11.7bil in tourism- related transactions. To support these goals, the Selangor Budget 2025 has allocated RM8mil for VSY2025 preparations. These include programming and upgrading tourism facilities across all nine districts. In the works are over 100 programmes and initiatives covering educational tourism, sports, food and beverage, arts, culture and heritage. Also present during the festival press conference were Menteri Besar Incorporated chief executive officer Saipolyazan M. Yusop and Tourism Selangor chief executive officer Chua Yee Ling.

Samenta heartened by Inland Revenue Board's latest measures on e-invoicing
PETALING JAYA: The Inland Revenue Board's (IRB) decision to exempt micro enterprises from e-invoicing and to give small and medium enterprises more time to comply with the mandate is a positive step that will help ease the current difficulties faced by businesses in the country. The Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Malaysia (Samenta) stated that IRB's exemptions are not only timely but also reflect an understanding of the real challenges faced by small businesses on the ground. 'We have provided input on both issues, and we are grateful that the government has shown genuine care and support for our most vulnerable enterprises,' Samenta national president Datuk William Ng said. 'We are especially heartened by the government's decisive move to permanently exempt businesses earning less than RM500,000 annually from the e-invoicing mandate. 'This exemption spares our smallest traders, hawkers and family-run shops, many operating without digital infrastructure, from compliance burdens that could have forced them to shut down or operate informally,' he added. Ng said the postponement of e-invoicing requirements until Jan 1, 2026, for businesses earning below RM5 million a year provides SMEs with much-needed time to prepare, strengthen their skills and adjust to new demands. This flexibility is essential for SMEs to survive and grow in today's changing economic environment, he added. On Thursday, IRB announced that the e-invoicing implementation for taxpayers with annual income or sales between RM1 million and RM5 million is postponed to Jan 1, 2026, while those below RM500,000 are exempted, and the deadline for those up to RM1 million is extended to July 1, 2026. The board also set a new e-invoicing implementation timeline: Phase 3 for taxpayers with annual income or sales between RM5 million and RM25 million starts on July 1, 2025; Phase 4 for those earning RM1 million to RM5 million begins on Jan 1, 2026; and Phase 5 for taxpayers with income up to RM1 million will commence on July 1, 2026. On the government's decision to postpone the permit requirement for the use of subsidised liquefied petroleum gas, Ng said: 'In response to the concerns of our street-level food operators, the temporary waiver of liquefied petroleum gas permit requirements will go a long way in safeguarding the daily livelihoods of thousands of families and small traders. It may be a small administrative change, but it carries significant implications for business continuity and the cost of living.' Without these timely measures, he said, Malaysia could have faced the potential collapse of thousands of small businesses, particularly those in the micro and informal sectors. Ng pointed out that the government's proactive stance has averted what could have become a national micro-business crisis. 'More importantly, these decisions send a clear message that the government sees SMEs as a central pillar of our economy and is responsive and willing to amend policies based on feedback from the ground,' he said, adding that Malaysia is a country where small businesses are treated with respect and understanding.

Bursa Malaysia publicly reprimands Meridian, fines five directors total of RM350,000
KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd has publicly reprimanded Meridian Bhd and imposed fines totalling RM350,000 on five of its directors for the breach of Main Market listing requirements. It said in a statement today that MERIDIAN was publicly reprimanded for failing to make an immediate announcement that the company had insignificant business or operations upon announcement of the unaudited quarterly report for the financial period ended June 30, 2023 (4Q FY2023) on Aug 29, 2023. "In this regard, MERIDIAN had an insignificant business or operations based on 4Q FY2023, where the company's revenue of RM2.738 million on a consolidated basis represented 0.93 per cent of the company's share capital of RM294.021 million as at June 30, 2023," Bursa Malaysia added. The fines were imposed against its executive director and chief executive officer, Datuk Yap Ting Hau, who then resigned on Dec 29, 2023 (RM100,000), Tang Boon Koon (RM100,000), Chew Shin Yong (RM50,000), Ng Kok Hok (RM50,000) and Kunamony S Kandiah (RM50,000).
