BURBERRY has pinned its revival on 'timeless British luxury', while telling staff their jobs will not be safe if they work at a certain time of day.
The fashion house yesterday said it would be culling 1,700 jobs as part of a radical cost-cutting strategy in the face of losses and slumping sales.

The job cuts, equivalent to a fifth of its entire workforce, will fall on head office staff and cutting back on the shifts at its retail stores depending on peak hours.
Bosses admitted that the firm would also be culling its entire night shift workforce at its Castleford factory in West Yorks.
Around 150 workers there will lose their jobs, despite Burberry announcing a tie-up with King Charles' Highgrove estate to make £2,490 limited edition trench coats.
CEO Joshua Schulman, who was sent in to Burberry ten months ago to spearhead a turnaround, yesterday said the changes were needed 'to maintain the long-term viability of UK manufacturing'.
He added: 'We want to reiterate our commitment to making trench coats here in the UK.'
Mr Schulman has recently launched his turnaround based on Burberry's heritage products.
But he has also tried to make the brand more accessible with cheaper items, such as £450 bikinis as modelled by Rosie Huntington- Whiteley and £320 bucket hats, as worn by tennis star Jack Draper.
Burberry said it wanted to cut costs by £100million after swinging to a £66million loss in the year to April.
A year earlier it had profits of £383million.
Shares in Burberry still rose 8.93 per cent to 900.63p yesterday as investors welcomed the cost-cutting.

The brand has been battered by a slowdown in consumer spending in China, nervousness in the US and an ill-fated move into streetwear fashions, which alienated its discerning wealthy shoppers.
Burberry, which used to rely on China for 40 per cent of its sales, said they fell by 16 per cent in Asia Pacific, while in America they were down by 9 per cent and in Europe they fell by 8 per cent.
The firm also repeated its call for the UK Government to scrap the so-called tourist tax, which it says has made Britain a less attractive shopping destination in relation to its European peers.
Mr Schulman said: 'We would love the UK to be an attractive destination. The withdrawal of UK tax-free shopping heaped additional pressure on the UK and we would welcome the repeal of that.'
Co-op to recover
THE CO-OP yesterday said its shops will be back to normal by the weekend — two weeks after it was hit by a cyber attack.
Pictures of empty shelves have circulated on social media after the food retailer's deliveries were disrupted and its IT systems went down.
Co-op — targeted by the same gang as Marks & Spencer — now insists that it is in the 'recovery phase'.
Two weeks ago, it revealed hackers had accessed its data.
Merger delivers a threat
A NEWLY privatised Royal Mail faces more pressure from rivals after delivery firm Evri struck a merger with DHL, and locker business InPost announced a jump in revenues.
Evri, which rebranded three years ago from Hermes to improve its reputation, is to become a logistics giant in the UK after the deal with DHL.

The tie-up will create a new firm delivering two billion parcels and letters a year.
DHL has a smaller presence in the UK but will take a minority stake in Evri, which is owned by equity firm Apollo.
Separately, InPost reported a 39 per cent rise in parcel volumes while revenues rose by a fifth to £585million.
InPost, which recently bought Yodel, has 16,000 lockers across the UK and has benefited from Brits using it to buy and sell via platforms such as Vinted, as well as retailers.
Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky, who sealed his £3.6billion takeover of Royal Mail last month, has said he wants to roll-out InPost-style lockers to his new purchase.
Direct to probe
AVIVA's £3.7billion takeover of rival insurer Direct Line has been referred for a probe by the competition authority.
The insurer announced its takeover in December and received approval from shareholders in March.
But it has taken until now for the Competition and Markets Authority to open its 'Phase One' investigation — looking at whether it will result in a 'substantial lessening' of competition.
It comes as the Government says it wants the regulator to 'drive investor confidence and support economic growth'.
Pawn is taken
PAWNBROKER H&T Group is the latest British firm to be snapped up by an overseas rival, after agreeing to a £297million takeover.
Shares soared yesterday by 40 per cent to 644p after it revealed US suitor First Cash made its first approach in December and made three more offers before a fourth cash proposal at 661p-a-share.
H&T, which has 285 shops across the UK, has recently toasted a boom in revenues on the back of record-high gold prices as squeezed Brits cash in their jewellery.

Labour's tax raid on family businesses is projected to cost hundreds of jobs in Sir Keir Starmer's constituency alone, new analysis shows. The revenue-raising scheme is also projected to hit the local economies of Labour constituencies harder than their Conservative, Reform and Liberal Democrat-voting counterparts. Analysis by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), which represents nearly 200,000 UK businesses, revealed that the changes to business property relief (BPR) announced in Rachel Reeves's October Budget will stifle growth in Labour seats across the country. The CBI claims that the average gross value added (GVA) losses in seats that elected Labour MPs at the last general election will be over £24 million, compared to £20 million in Conservative seats and £18.5 million in Reform constituencies. The projections span from the October 2024 budget to April 2030, after the next general election. Only seats held by the Green Party fared worse with an average GVA loss of around £40 million, suggesting that cities and urban centres will be worst hit by the raid. The CBI expects the economic hit to result in thousands of job losses in the most-exposed constituencies. Sir Keir's seat of Holborn and St Pancras will be the fourth-worst hit constituency in the country with 1,037 jobs expected to be lost, according to the analysis. Cabinet ministers to feel the pinch in their seats Red Wall seats are also set to suffer. The analysis shows that of £14.9 billion in nationwide GVA losses, some £4.6 billion (31 per cent) of that will hit constituencies that the Tories won in 2019 and Labour won back in 2024. These seats include the 31 Red Wall seats in the North and Midlands along with other key marginal constituencies which Labour will hope to win again at the next election if it wants to stay in power. Senior Cabinet ministers will also feel the pinch in their constituencies. The second-worst hit seat in the country, Manchester Central, is currently represented by Lucy Powell, the Leader of the House of Commons. The third-worst hit seat is Birmingham Ladywood, represented by Shabana Mahmood, the Justice Secretary. Hilary Benn, the Northern Ireland Secretary, represents the ninth-worst-hit seat of Leeds South. In the October Budget, the Chancellor slashed BPR in an attempt to raise money from family businesses. BPR was originally introduced by a Labour government in the 1970s. It allows company shareholders to leave business assets to loved ones without paying inheritance tax on them. But in a sweeping change that will take effect in April 2026, full business relief will only apply to the first £1 million of a business's assets upon a shareholder's death, with everything above this subject to 20 per cent tax.

US trade tariffs have dealt a £150 million blow to the UK steel industry as a wave of cheap products driven from American shores are being dumped in Britain, senior industry figures warn. The UK risks being hit harder than other countries in the tariff chaos despite having negotiated a deal with Donald Trump on exports of steel to the US. This, steel bosses say, is because the UK does not have 'the right defences' to prevent countries such as China from flooding our market with cheap steel that would have been sold to the US. That will drive down prices and crowd out domestic British steelmakers. By contrast, EU countries have erected barriers to protect their steel industries. Trade body UK Steel said imports were 'flooding on to the UK market depressing prices' as a result of the US tariffs, which last week rose to 50 per cent for steel and aluminium from a previous rate of 25 per cent. The UK managed to avoid the higher levy after securing a last-minute exemption. But Russell Codling, commercial director at Tata Steel, told MPs urgent measures were needed to protect UK industry. He said steel prices in the UK were tanking below those in Europe following the US tariffs – a price difference 'leading to something like a £100 million- £150 million-a-year loss in the UK compared with Europe.' The UK industry is already struggling to remain profitable due to high energy costs and environmental taxes, which are heavier than those on EU manufacturers. Codling added that the UK market for foreign steel imports was 'far more free-flowing than into mainland Europe'. The latest crisis comes hard on the heels of Government intervention to prevent the country's last blast furnaces at the British Steel plant in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, from being closed by Chinese owners Jingye in April. Codling, whose firm employs 8,000 people, said the UK needed to bring in measures to shield producers against cheap imports that 'are as least as good as our trading partners around the world.' A 25 per cent levy will still apply until the Government finalises a proposed trade deal with the US which should see tariffs cut to zero. Steel exports from Britain to the US are worth £400 million a year, making it the sector's second-biggest market. But UK bosses fear the Trump administration could alter the terms of any deal before it is signed. Gareth Stace, director general of UK Steel, said the Government needed to take 'decisive action' to protect producers. He added: 'The EU has stepped up its trade defences, and now we must do the same.' Respected industrialist Andrew Cook warned that the dumping of cheap steel would cause 'great damage'. He said: 'China built 600 million tons of surplus steel-making capacity to dump on foreign markets. This is the main reason why Britain's steel industry has suffered so badly.' Currently, the UK sets a quota for steel imports allowed into the country tariff-free. Imports above that level incur a 25 per cent levy. But UK Steel says the quotas do not offer 'adequate protection'. The UK's Trade Remedies Authority (TRA), which monitors unfair practices, is reviewing whether the measures, which are based on EU controls from 2018, suffice. Industry minister Sarah Jones insisted the Government – which is set to unveil its £2.5 billion steel strategy later this year – is backing the industry 'to the hilt'. She said: 'The TRA has been working at pace to identify stronger measures to defend the industry.' Rajesh Nair, head of Tata Steel UK, urged Ministers to ensure the US doesn't require British exports to have been 'melted and poured' in the UK to be tariff-exempt. This process now only happens at British Steel's Scunthorpe blast furnaces. Tata, which closed its UK blast furnace last year, is having to import steel until electric arc furnace steelmaking starts in Port Talbot in late 2027, Nair said.

Kiki McDonough's status as a successful businesswoman would have come as a surprise to her father, her teachers and at least one bank manager. It even seems to slightly surprise Kiki herself, who has the air of an accidental entrepreneur. Her eponymous jewellery brand, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this summer, is worn by the Princess of Wales and the Queen. She is invited to give her views on business and the economy on high-profile TV programmes, including Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, where she lambasted the Labour Government. McDonough, who turns 71 this month, started her business in the heady 1980s when Mrs Thatcher was in Downing Street and women were storming the City and setting up businesses of their own. 'Unless you were there you can't understand how extraordinary it was to have the first woman Prime Minister,' she says. 'She pushed her way through the old school network. There were so many entitled men. I knew some of them.' She has considerably less admiration for the country's first female occupant of No 11 Downing Street, Rachel Reeves. 'It's great to have a female Chancellor but unfortunately this one... it hasn't worked as well as we would have liked. Being the first woman chancellor and to have screwed up,' she says, referring to the increases in employer National Insurance Contributions. 'These tax changes Labour has brought in – it is completely counterproductive. If you want business to succeed you don't pile on a lot of hurdles and barriers. They spread doom and gloom like butter, and once you have done that, it is very hard to unspread it. Rumour has it Reeves might take more taxes in the next Budget. She shouldn't be spending so much.' McDonough started her business when a family friend, Nigel Milne, asked her to design modern jewellery for his shop in Mayfair. Until then, she had been a secretary, including for David Stirling, the founder of the SAS, having left school as soon as she could because lessons bored her. Though her father had an antique jewellery shop, she says she knew nothing about the business, adding: 'But I was young and you just go for it. I'm not much of a feminist but I priced my jewellery between £95 and £950 as women were starting to earn more, to make their own decisions and buy their own jewellery.' Her first designs included crystal heart earrings with a diamond-set bow on top. 'Well it was the 80s,' she says. David Deakin, whom she had lined up to make them, told her he didn't think they would sell. 'I wasn't sure either. We laugh about it now,' she says. The designs, which are still on sale today, proved wildly successful. 'I asked my father for £5,000 to start my own jewellery business,' she says. 'He had been a jeweller – I am from five generations of jewellers – but none women. 'He looked rather bemused and said he was not sure it was a good idea. He loaned me the money for two years. I paid him back within a year, and no one was more surprised than me, let alone him.' 'Women were not taken as seriously back then. I remember going to the bank manager at Barclays when I had been in business six or seven years. 'He asked me into a meeting where he said he didn't think this was the bank for me. 'I rang up HSBC and they have been fantastic ever since. I do feel a little bit of that Pretty Woman thing, that he made a big mistake, huge. It was definitely because I was a little woman with a little jewellery company.' One or two snooty rivals on Bond Street 'thought I was pathetic' she says. 'I never let it bother me. Have a laugh and soldier on. 'My mother said it is terribly unattractive to complain. My father was a prisoner-of-war and that puts it in perspective.' McDonough's Royal connection goes back to 1986, when Sarah Ferguson arrived at Bordeaux airport wearing onyx heart and bow earrings and a pearl and onyx heart necklace. Soon after, Diana, Princess of Wales, began wearing Kiki jewellery too. McDonough knew Diana's sisters and thinks they must have said something to her about McDonough's jewellery. 'She was lovely. When she came to my shop she waited her turn. 'The jewellery I do is not bling or cutting edge, it is pretty and hopefully makes you feel prettier. 'That's what I think jewellery should be, it shouldn't walk in the door before you. It suits the working mother lifestyle, where you can wear it every day and love it. Twice divorced, she combined the business with bringing up two sons. She says: 'I had children quite late and thought why have them if you're not going to see them? I didn't take a break, I just ran the business at a slightly slower growth rate. Then when the children went away to school, I thought right, that's it. 'My prices are now £950 to about £25,000. I still love seeing people in the street wearing my jewellery. It's a bore to keep something in a safe, I think jewellery should be worn with jeans. I put on a pair of earrings on a Monday and take them off on a Friday.' She is, she says in cut-glass tones, a 'great Liverpool fan', a passion acquired from her youngest son. Her other great passion is ballet, and she has designed a collection inspired by prima ballerina Lauren Cuthbertson. She says: 'Ballet and football are both about really neat footwork and amazing athleticism and strength, but ballet is my ultimate. I love it.' Next on the agenda is expanding in the US. She hasn't seen Melania Trump wear her jewellery, adding: 'Though I have to say, she does dress beautifully. I think she's amazing. She is a cool customer.' McDonough has no plans to retire, and says her two sons won't take over when she eventually steps back. She says: 'I don't have that ambition to pass on a family business. I have had the best 40 years any woman could possibly ask for, and counting, so whoever has it next – lucky them.'
