Certificate of Need approved for $320 million Bluffton hospital
BLUFFTON, S.C. (WSAV) — The South Carolina Department of Public Health has approved Novant Health's Certificate of Need (CON) application to build an innovative, 50-bed hospital in Bluffton.
This approval allows the $320 million, full-service community hospital help reach its goal to expand medical care services to the Lowcountry area.
'The approval of our CON application reaffirms Novant Health's commitment to bring world-class medical care closer to home,' said Jason Bernd, Novant Health senior vice president and president of the South Carolina Region. 'This hospital is a long-term investment in Bluffton and the surrounding communities to ensure families have access to high-quality care without having to travel great distances.'
The site, which will be called the Novant Health Bluffton Medical Center is designed to meet the healthcare needs of Beaufort and Jasper Counties. The full-service hospital will open with 50 beds and, according to Novant, can expand to 100 beds as community needs grow. The facility will offer a wide range of medical specialties, including medical, surgical, emergency and trauma services, intensive care, labor and delivery, cardiology, neurology and orthopedics.
'This hospital will be a game-changer for the Lowcountry, bringing much-needed specialty care to one of South Carolina's fastest-growing areas,' said Joel Taylor, president of Hilton Head Medical Center. 'Not only will Novant Health Bluffton Medical Center transform healthcare access, but it will also drive significant economic growth in the region, creating as many as 1,000 jobs in the Bluffton area over the next five years.'
The center is expected to open in 2028.

King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation holds new board member reception
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – On Sunday, June 8, the King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation marked a significant milestone in its 40-year legacy of preserving and promoting Savannah's African American history, culture, and community leadership. The foundation hosted a New Board Member Reception and Open House at the historic Beach Institute African American Cultural Center. Chairman Jerry Q. Greene, Sr., spoke to those in attendance about the foundation's guiding purpose, stating, 'History teaches us how people who looked like us solved similar problems in the past.' With their generous support, many in attendance were inducted into the newly established 'Friends of the Cottage', a dedicated group formed to help secure resources and broaden community investment in the King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation. 'Friends of the Cottage' will serve as an important fundraising and advocacy arm for the foundation by supporting its preservation efforts, educational programming, and cultural initiatives, including exhibits like 'The Art of Richard Law' and 'Priced Out', a collaborative project with Housing Savannah and SCAD Serve.
