Bulls down Sharks to book URC final date with Leinster

The Bulls and Leinster will face off in the URC Grand Final at Croke Park next week in a battle between raw power and polished precision.
First half recap: Bulls start strong
The Bulls stormed out of the gates at Loftus Versfeld, taking early control of the semi-final with sharp attacking execution. Sebastian de Klerk crossed in the seventh minute after a break from Embrose Papier, before Canan Moodie latched onto a cross-kick to make it 12-0. While Jordan Hendrikse got the Sharks on the board with a penalty, discipline issues plagued both sides. Harold Vorster received the first of three Bulls yellow cards, but Johan Goosen extended the lead to 15-3 with a penalty before halftime.
The half closed in chaos as the Bulls were twice reduced to 13 men, first with Cameron Hanekom's dangerous tackle and then a yellow card for Marcell Coetzee. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Bulls' defence held firm, repelling multiple Sharks attacks inside their 22. Missed goal kicks and handling errors cost the Durban side dearly, as they failed to capitalise on their dominance in territory and possession.
Second half recap: Sharks find their bite, but Bulls hold on
The Sharks found a spark after the break, finally making their numbers count. Makazole Mapimpi scored four minutes into the second half, followed soon after by Ethan Hooker, closing the gap to just two points at 15-13. But missed conversions from both tries continued to hurt their chances, as pressure mounted in front of the 47,000-strong Loftus crowd.
The Bulls regained their composure, with Keagan Johannes slotting a penalty to create breathing room. Their third and final try came through David Kriel, capping a slick move that began with a Papier break and ended with Cobus Wiese's pass out wide. At 25-13, the Bulls shut the door on any Sharks comeback and booked their place in the Vodacom URC Grand Final for the third time in four seasons.
The Bulls will take on Leinster in the 2025 URC Grand Final at Dublin's iconic Croke Park on Saturday. It will be the first final hosted outside South Africa, since the inception of the tournament in its current form.
It's a showdown between the tournament's top two seeds, with the Bulls chasing their first title and Leinster looking to end their recent playoff drought. The Pretoria side arrives battle-tested after a gritty semi-final win over the Sharks, while Leinster were clinical in dispatching Glasgow. With contrasting styles and a title on the line, this final promises a fierce contest of physicality, flair, and tactical precision.

Gerda Steyn claims fourth Comrades Marathon title in tactical masterclass

CHAMPION Gerda Steyn clinched her fourth Comrades Marathon women's title with a dominant performance on Sunday, showcasing her ultra marathon dominance in South Africa once more. Picture: Henk Kruger Independent Media A TACTICAL masterclass is what South African Comrades Marathon runner Gerda Steyn produced in landing her fourth title on Sunday. Even when Elizabeth Mukoloma pulled away at a blistering pace from her in the early stages, Steyn kept her composure, and once she reclaimed the lead, she held that position all the way to the 'down run' finish line at the People's Park in Durban. The result confirmed Steyn's status as the dominant force in ultra marathon running in South African with her third consecutive title, her maiden win came in 2019. She crossed the line in five hours, 51 and 19 seconds (5:51:10). While the latter stages of the race became somewhat of a grind for her. Steyn did seem to have her struggles but she managed her fatigue once again. Alexandra Morozova finished in second (5:55:56) and provided a serious challenge, but did not have the legs to catch Steyn ultimately. Steyn started at a steady pace, and was content to let Elizabeth Mukoloma lead the way in the early on. Earlier, in a first for the Comrades Marathon, the elites went off 15 minutes ahead of the rest of the field in what was an attempt to alleviate some of the congestion of runners at the start.

Bulls No 8 Hanekom won't play in the URC final, Evan Roos called up to the Springbok squad

The Bulls' Cameron Hanekom suffered a match-ending injury in the URC semi-final against the Sharks at Loftus Versveld on Saturday. Photo: Itumeleng English Independent Media Image: Itumeleng English Independent Media As the dew was settling on the Bulls' United Rugby Championship semi-final defeat of the Sharks, a disconsolate Cameron Hanekom was hugged by his teammates as he hobbled on crutches, his right leg heavily strapped. It was poignant to see the Bulls players commiserating with the young No 8 who has to live with not participating in this week's final against Leinster in Dublin. The big question now is how long the URC Player of the Year finalist will be out of rugby with the Springbok season looming. Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has moved swiftly to address the loose forward situation, calling up Stormers No 8 Evan Roos to cover for Hanekom for the match against the Barbarians in Cape Town on June 28, and the two-Test series against Italy. Bulls coach Jake White provided some clarity on Hanekom's injury, which occurred in the 47th minute of the closely fought contest. Hanekom was cleared out a ruck by Sharks captain Siya Kolisi. He clutched his hamstring in pain and was in discomfort as he left the field on a golf cart. 'Cameron is being given a probe. Obviously, he's very upset, which is natural. He is quite down,' White said. 'I told his parents earlier in the change room that they must remember he is 21-years old with a long future ahead of him. People forget how times have changed in rugby,' White reflected. 'When I started coaching (in the late 90s), 21-year-old forwards weren't invited to Bulls training. The Stormers' Evan Roos will replace Cameron Hanekom in the Springboks' squad. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix 'If they were, it was generally for the old men to bash them on a Monday night at training. 'Cameron has obviously jumped the line because he is so talented, and he feels a bit down now, but we must not forget that he's just 21. There's still a lot of rugby that he's going to be involved in over the next couple of years.' White is hopeful that Hanekom's injury isn't as serious as it appears but confirmed that he won't play in the final. 'When it is swollen and there's blood on it, it is tough to see,' White said. 'They had a look and he won't play against Leinster, that I can tell you.
