John Fogerty is following Taylor Swift's lead, as he not only re-records and re-releases some of his most famous tunes, but also renames them with 'John's Version' at the end of each title, just as Swift did with her famed Taylor's Version albums. Fogerty is planning on releasing Legacy: The Creedence Clearwater Revival Years later this summer, which will feature new recordings of some of the band's most popular tracks. He already owns the rights to this music after a lengthy court battle, but it looks like he is intent on celebrating the tunes anyway.
This Friday (June 27), two of his John's Version tracks have become fast bestselling cuts in the United States, just hours after being released.
John Fogerty Shares a New Double Single
Fogerty released a double single on June 27, including the John's Version takes on both 'Born on the Bayou' and 'Lodi,' two Creedence Clearwater Revival classics. Fans have loved the originals for decades, and now it seems they are interested in these updated renditions as well.
As of the time of writing, 'Born on the Bayou (John's Version)" sits at No. 20 on the iTunes Top Songs chart. 'Lodi (John's Version)" is only two spaces below, at No. 22. Separating the pair is 'Five More Minutes,' a track American Idol winner Scotty McCreery originally released back in 2017.
More Re-Recordings Arrived in May
Fogerty has now released five songs from his upcoming retrospective project. Back in May, he shared a triple single that featured re-recorded takes on 'Up Around the Bend,' 'Porterville,' and 'Have You Ever Seen the Rain,' one of Creedence Clearwater Revival's most famous smashes, which regularly appears on the Billboard rankings to this day.
Taylor Swift's Re-Recordings Set the Standard
Taylor Swift released the first of four Taylor's Version albums in April 2021. All of those projects — Fearless, Red, Speak Now, and 1989 — hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and dozens of songs featured on their tracklists made it to the Hot 100, including several chart-toppers.
The singer-songwriter recently acquired the rights to her entire catalog, essentially making this process no longer necessary for her. Although the future is unclear for this effort, Swift has stated she has already re-recorded her self-titled debut, which could arrive at some point. Sadly, Reputation may never earn a Taylor's Version.
