Muscat Municipality celebrates Arab City Day
Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by Muscat Municipality, joined its Arab counterparts in celebrating Arab City Day, observed annually on March 15.
This year's theme, "Resilient and Enduring Cities," highlights 58 years since the founding of the Arab Towns Organization in 1967.
Through its efforts, Muscat Municipality seeks to share expertise, leverage global experiences, and drive growth and prosperity while achieving national development goals.
In his speech on the occasion, Eng. Abdulrahman Hisham Al-Asfour, Secretary-General of the Organisation, emphasised the significance of smart cities, stating: "This year's theme reflects a deep awareness that cities represent the future of global life. With growing global challenges—climate change, health crises, urban expansion, and geopolitical shifts—the need for resilient cities is more urgent than ever."
Al-Asfour added: "Resilient cities rely on sustainable urban planning, robust infrastructure, economic diversity, community engagement, and smart technology. These factors enhance adaptability and ensure cities can withstand environmental, economic, and social shifts. A well- prepared city can respond to crises efficiently, minimizing damage, accelerating recovery, and maintaining a safe and sustainable environment where normal life continues even in challenging times."
For his part, Ahmed Mohammed Al-Humaidi, Chairman of Muscat Municipality, stated: "Muscat Municipality's participation in Arab City Day reaffirms its commitment to adopting the best strategies for urban resilience and sustainability. This includes infrastructure development, service enhancements, proactive responses to environmental and economic challenges, and the creation of innovative solutions that contribute to societal well-being.
"These efforts align with Oman Vision 2040, which aims to enhance quality of life, boost the Sultanate's competitiveness, and build a future-ready, sustainable society and economy."
Resilient cities go beyond infrastructure; they integrate social, economic, and environmental elements that enhance their ability to adapt to crises and challenges. In this regard, Muscat Municipality continues to improve quality of life through balanced urban planning, efficient resource management, and the implementation of smart solutions, ensuring a more sustainable and thriving city.
Recognising the vital role of organizations in urban development, Muscat Municipality became a member of the Arab Towns Organisation in 1971. Since then, it has strengthened international cooperation with cities, institutions, and organisations to enhance collaboration, share expertise, and advance sustainable urban development, ultimately driving growth and prosperity.

The awareness drive came as part of the government's broader public health strategy to prevent zoonotic diseases and ensure a safe Eid celebration across the country. Meanwhile, Muscat Municipality said in a statement that slaughterhouses and fruit and vegetable markets undergo intensive preparations during the festive seasons to provide integrated services for consumers, as municipality continues its efforts to ensure service quality and maintain public health and safety.

Oman Embassy clarifies on recruitment of Indonesian domestic workers
Muscat: The Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in Jakarta issued on Wednesday a notice urging Omani citizens not to deal with offices involved in the recruitment of domestic workers in the Republic of Indonesia. According to the embassy, the export of Indonesian domestic workers is currently not officially permitted to Arab countries, including the Sultanate of Oman. The statement clarified that such recruitment remains unofficial and unauthorised. As a result, any financial transactions made for this purpose cannot be legally pursued, and the embassy confirmed that no legal procedures can be taken to recover funds transferred for unapproved recruitment. The embassy emphasised the importance of avoiding dealings that fall outside the official framework, as they are considered illegal.

Oman presents commemorative plaque to WTO in Geneva
Muscat – Oman has gifted a commemorative plaque to World Trade Organization (WTO) to mark the visit of H H Sayyid Bilarab bin Haitham al Said to its headquarters in Geneva on June 21, 2023. Created by Omani artist Salem bin Khamis al Salami, the plaque is a symbolic representation of Oman's civilisational heritage, natural diversity and its future development vision. It was created under the supervision of Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion in collaboration with Omani Society for Arts, which is affiliated to Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth. Presentation of the plaque reflects Oman's approach to cultural diplomacy and its growing engagement with international institutions. H E Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, said, 'This initiative reflects Oman's commitment to promoting cultural exchange and building international partnerships through the arts.' He also praised H H Sayyid Bilarab's role in promoting art as a means of global communication. H E Sayyid Said bin Sultan al Busaidi, Undersecretary for Culture in Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, described the gift as a 'cultural and civilisational statement' aligned with Oman Vision 2040. H E Idris bin Abdulrahman al Khanjari, Oman's Permanent Representative to United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva, emphasised the diplomatic significance of the gesture. The plaque is now displayed in WTO's Salle des Pas Perdus, a space reserved for artwork that celebrate dialogue and multilateral cooperation. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of WTO, said, 'A nice ceremony to unveil the beautiful painting gifted by Oman to WTO. The occasion also marked Oman's 25th year of accession to WTO. We appreciate Oman for this wonderful gift. Congratulations and many thanks to H H Sayyid Bilarab who took special interest in this project, to the artist, to the ambassador and the team for the hard work.'
