Rothko painting worth more than £42m damaged by child visiting gallery
An abstract painting thought to be worth millions of pounds has been damaged by a child at a gallery in the Netherlands.
The painting 'Grey, Orange on Maroon, No. 8' by artist Mark Rothko was housed at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
However, it appears a young visitor got a little too close to the masterwork and touched it.
The museum told The Independent the artwork had 'sustained superficial damage', which included 'small scratches' in the lower part of the painting.
'We are currently researching the next steps for the treatment of the painting,' the statement said.
No information was provided about the possible cost of restoring the artwork, and no pictures of the damage were released.
'We expect that the work will be able to be shown again in the future,' the museum added.
A spokesperson for the museum told Dutch media outlet Algemeen Dagblad on Friday that the damage occurred during an 'unguarded moment.'
The artwork is estimated to be worth up to €50m (£42.5m), according to the Dutch newspaper.
Another Rothko painting was defaced in 2012 while on display in London's Tate Modern museum.
'Black on Maroon' was part of a series originally commissioned by the Four Seasons Restaurant in New York, which was housed in the Seagram Building, a celebrated modernist skyscraper on Park Avenue.
Artist Wlodzimierz Umaniec vandalised the painting in the name of his Yellowist movement. He was jailed for two years.
And last year, London's National Gallery made the 'unfortunate decision' to ban liquids in the wake of a spate of attacks by activists on its artworks.
'Unfortunately, we have now reached a point where we have been forced to act to protect our visitors, staff and collection,' the National Gallery said in a statement on Thursday.
'From 10am on Friday October 18 2024, no liquids can be brought into the National Gallery, except for baby formula, expressed milk and prescription medicines.'
It cited paintings including Vincent van Gogh's Sunflowers, John Constable's The Hay Wain and Velazquez's Rokeby Venus among those targeted in 'five separate attacks on iconic paintings'.

Man found dead at church youth camp south of Midway
A 38-year-old youth leader was found dead in a trailer at the Chalet Campground in the Wasatch Mountain State Park on Thursday. The man had slept in an enclosed trailer Wednesday evening and was found dead by other leaders the next morning, said Wasatch County Undersheriff Josh Probst. THC Gummies Linked To Prosper Graduation Celebration Hospitalizations
Two teenagers face second-degree felony charges after distributing THC-infused gummies at a Prosper graduation party last month. The gummies, which led to overdose-like symptoms and hospital visits for at least seven attendees, were purchased from a Plano smoke shop, according to arrest warrants obtained from the Prosper Police Department. Kyle Muchineuta, 17, of Prosper, and Cesar Omana, 18, of Frisco, are charged with the manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance. Records from the schools' graduation programs indicate Muchineuta attended Walnut Grove High School, while Omana attended Rock Hill High School. The incident occurred at the Prosper Graduation Celebration, held from 11 p.m. on Friday, May 16, to 3 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, at 3R's Ranch in Prosper. The event, organized by a nonprofit and not affiliated with Prosper ISD, is traditionally alcohol—and drug-free. It offers games, dancing, music, and food for seniors from Prosper's three high schools. According to the warrants, Muchineuta and Omana purchased the THC-infused gummies from A&A Smoke Shop at 3620 State Highway 121 in Plano, CBS News Texas reported. Victims paid Omana via a cash app for the edibles, which the teens then distributed at the party. Nine attendees ingested the gummies, with eight requiring hospital transport after exhibiting overdose-like symptoms. At least seven students were hospitalized. Prosper police responded to the ranch around 2:15 a.m. on May 17. The town said in a written statement, 'Paramedics from Prosper, Celina, and Frisco treated multiple individuals experiencing medical distress and transported eight patients to local hospitals.' Allan Haji, founder and owner of A&A Smoke Shop, defended his business's practices, stating, 'We do not sell to minors. Period. This isn't just a guideline—it's a non-negotiable rule that we enforce with the utmost seriousness. Every team member is trained and held accountable to verify IDs without exception.' Brian Brobbey blackmailed: explosive reports emerge about Ajax striker
As per Het Parool and VoetbalPrimeur, Ajax's Brian Brobbey has reportedly been the victim of blackmail. A good friend of his was 'shot as a result and barely managed to survive'. According to Dutch investigative circles, Brobbey fell victim to what is referred to as the 'Holleeder method'. This refers to when one Willem Holleeder and his accomplices deliberately created fake conflicts in which they made wealthy businessmen believe that they had problems with heavy-hitters from the criminal circuit. They then offered to solve these fictional problems in exchange for large sums of money. Advertisement Brobbey's unfortunate situation concerns the notorious Antillean-Amsterdam criminal Jeymon A. (31) according to sources within the police and justice system. He used a 'classic extortion trick' to get the better of Brobbey. Jeymon A., known in the underworld as 'Piccalo', approached the Ajax striker in 2022 at Valhalla, an annual festival at the RAI complex. During that approach, Brobbey was told that 'Moroccans from Utrecht' were looking for him. Jeymon A. claimed to have solved that for him, but made it quickly known that he wanted a fee. He has now been sentenced to 10 years in prison for attempted manslaughter of Brobbey's childhood friend, possession of a firearm and possession of 1.6 kilos of MDMA.
