Rural homestay boom written in tea leaves

Tucked away amid towering trees in Shuikou village, Xu Dan's homestay attracts an uninterrupted flow of urban residents seeking serenity and tradition.
At the main courtyard of her rural abode in Changxing county of Huzhou city in East China's Zhejiang province, lies a tranquil pool so clear that it resembles a mirror of the sky, with a small wooden boat gently drifting.
Arched stone bridges span the water to link scattered courtyards and winding paths that meander through miniature artificial mountains, each rock carefully placed to echo the harmony of classic Chinese gardens.
Tea artisans in flowing robes perform age-old rituals — steeping, pouring, and presenting the tea with graceful movements.
Guests are welcomed not only with warmth but also a ceremonial tea treat: a trio of flavours, each steeped in meaning.
'The sweet tea, crafted from fragrant osmanthus blossoms and delicate tangerine slices, symbolises an abundant and joyful life. The salty tea is a mix of smoked beans, dried carrots, sesame seeds, orange peel, and crushed tea leaves that honours the toil of harvest and the earth's richness,' Xu says as she warmly welcomes guests in late April.
Finally, the plain tea, simple and pure, lingers with a fresh aftertaste that evokes the essence of true friendship — like plain tea, friendship should be honest and unadorned, needing no embellishment to be deeply appreciated, she explains.
'Guests have shown a strong desire to pay more for the tea experiences we arrange,' Xu says.
Born and raised in the village, the woman in her 30s started blending her homestay with intangible cultural heritage, particularly tea culture, in 2023.
'This idea came about because my uncle is a national-level inheritor of the local tea-making craft and its profound history,' she explains.
Zisun tea originates from Changxing and boasts a history of over 1,200 years. It used to be highly prized and designated as an imperial tribute tea during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
Crafted through meticulous traditional techniques, Zisun tea is distinguished by its fine, tender buds, subtle purplish hue, and shape resembling bamboo shoots — hence its name, which means 'purple bamboo shoot' tea.
To integrate tea culture into the guest experience, Xu pays attention to the environment and activities.
'Each of the 16 rooms in two buildings is stocked with Zisun tea and has a designated tea-tasting area,' she says.
'On every floor, there are books about tea and collections of essays from local authors. Guests can enjoy tea while reading, which creates a quiet, immersive experience.'
She also hosts interactive events to deepen visitors' engagement.
'I organise activities like Song Dynasty (960-1279) tea-whisking demonstrations, tea cake-making workshops, and modern tea-blending sessions,' she says.
Currently, it's tea-picking season and guests can participate in harvesting the leaves.
The tea culture theme has noticeably upgraded her business.
The homestay has been a family business since 2014, when her mother opened a farmhouse-style inn. It evolved into a fine agritourism experience when Xu took over in 2018 after quitting her product development job in Hangzhou, the provincial capital.
'I saw huge growth potential and wanted to incorporate my creative ideas into traditional culture,' she says.
Her efforts in cultural enhancement have improved the homestay's overall quality, which has brought guests of diverse backgrounds.
'Previously, most of my visitors were elderly,' she says.
'Now, we're seeing more families and younger seniors. The guests have a greater awareness of culture,' she notes.
Her homestay is among more than 500 in the village, many of which have cashed in on the integration of rural culture and tourism over the years.
'Nearly every household is involved. This makes it the largest rural tourism cluster in northern Zhejiang,' says Zhang Yuhua, the first secretary of the rural homestay industry association in Shuikou. The village attracted over 4.5 million visitors last year, generating about 1.5 billion yuan (£155.37 million) in tourism revenue.

Sandrine Zhang Ferron was born in China, raised in France, educated in business and worked in finance. But a decade ago she had both a moment of realisation and an immediate problem. One, she didn't want to spend her life 'making rich people richer' in finance, and two, she really wanted a yellow Poul Volther chair, but couldn't find one. They became the catalyst for an idea that changed the market for vintage furniture: in 2015 she launched Vinterior, an online marketplace for vintage and pre-owned furniture, lighting, textiles, home decor and art. Ten years on, the platform has 690,000 monthly visits, over half of which are Londoners. 'The city's rhythm, constant energy, and unexpected encounters have made it feel not just like home but the place where everything began,' she says. Now rooted in London, the self-confessed aesthete finds endless inspiration in the city's eclectic mix of cultures, styles and hidden gems. We asked Zhang Ferron to share her favourite spots, from the markets where she unearths unique finds to the places that feed her creativity. Suzhou, the Venice of China, where I lived with my aunt until I was five while my parents were settling in France. Then Lille, in the north of France, where I spent my teenage years. And Paris, where I did my master's, met my husband and built some of my closest friendships. The mix of cultures still lives in me. Split between north London and Mallorca. In London, it's that familiar triangle between Arsenal, Stoke Newington and Highbury, where I had the idea for Vinterior and where the company began. And then there's Puigpunyent, a small village in Mallorca where we spend most summers and long weekends. It's where our daughter learnt to walk, where we celebrated ten years of marriage and where everything slows down. One is full of momentum and energy. I've always admired leaders who stay composed under pressure, and her Tilbury speech is such a powerful example of that. I'd want to see how she handled the political aftermath, balancing strength and vulnerability, leading in a world that wasn't designed to hear her voice. We'd walk the streets of Tudor London (ideally with good boots and a bit of distance: I'm not sure how often things were cleaned) and I'd ask her how she navigated power without compromise, earned loyalty without giving too much away and kept her independence when the world expected her to marry. Her line 'I have the heart and stomach of a king' captures the mix of courage and restraint that true leadership requires. We [her partner and I] planned to stay in London for two years before moving to Asia — it's now been 18. I doubt I would have started a company, let alone Vinterior, if we'd lived elsewhere. London has this way of opening doors you didn't even know existed. Coming from a French and Chinese background I was used to being very direct and sometimes too direct, as I quickly learnt in my early days here. Highbury Barn is pretty close to perfect. It has everything I could want — La Fromagerie for cheese, Godfreys for amazing cuts, Highbury Fishmongers where I pick up fresh clams every Saturday to make spaghetti alle vongole for lunch (my daughter's favourite), and Da Mario for incredible Italian deli goods. Their fennel sausage, rosemary ham and mortadella are the best I've found in London. Swimming at Hampstead Heath Ladies' Pond. Only in London would cold water before breakfast feel like something people queue up for. There's a little hidden gem just behind London Fields that's become our go-to, aptly named Behind. A young, passionate chef puts out a seafood-led menu that changes with the seasons. The dishes are inventive and full of soul, and the wine list is just as thoughtfully curated. It always feels intimate, like you're in on a secret. I also love Prawn on the Lawn in Highbury for something a bit more relaxed: strong flavours, fresh fish and small plates that are made for sharing. My ideal night out starts with an early dinner, followed by immersive theatre — ideally Punchdrunk. Every experience there is electric. I love the ritual of debriefing with friends afterwards: what they noticed, what I missed, how we each saw something different. It's a brilliant conversation-starter. My ultimate breakfast indulgence is the bacon naan (with an egg, always) at Dishoom; the King's Cross location is my usual. It's a comforting ritual. On the weekends, you'll often find me at the French market on Blackstock Road. Their baguettes and croissants are the real deal and, in January, I always make a pilgrimage for a proper galette des rois. French roots die hard. Vinterior, of course. I used to spend weekends scouring vintage fairs and antique shops, hunting for the perfect piece. Now I can do it all online, from velvet Bellini sofas to sculptural art deco sideboards or a rustic ladder-back chair with just the right patina. It's all about character and history — and convenience. I'm at Third Space Islington four to five times a week: it's my reset button. I mix strength training, HIIT (high-intensity interval training), yoga and Pilates, depending on the day. My favourite mornings start with a tough HIIT session, followed by fifteen minutes in the sauna and five minutes in the cold plunge. It wakes me up on every level. I love the full spectrum — musicals, theatre, immersive performances, opera, ballet — you name it, I'll go. Recently I saw Much Ado About Nothing with Tom Hiddleston and it was absolutely brilliant. London's cultural scene never stops surprising me. When I want to slow down and take it all in, I'll head to the Royal Academy of Arts or the National Portrait Gallery. Both have that perfect blend of iconic works and unexpected discoveries. Whether it's a blockbuster exhibition or something more niche, I always walk away seeing the world a little differently. For me, it's Michaela Coel. She grew up in east London, trained at Guildhall, and created work like I May Destroy You that's bold, uncomfortable, and completely original. She embodies what makes London special: that someone with a strong, honest voice can shape culture without needing permission. She's both deeply local and globally resonant. Her work reminds me this city is where unexpected, anti-conformist voices don't just emerge, they thrive.

In James Cameron 's epic 2009 film 'Avatar', characters exist in a beautiful landscape with vast forests and mountains. This fictional setting was inspired by the real-life Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in China, known as a 'wonderland on Earth'. The breathtaking reserve is part of a wider scenic area officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But people have been shocked to discover how Zhangjiajie is being transformed into a 'stinking cesspit'. Disgraceful new footage reveals a look inside one of the ancient natural caves at the site, which was formed hundreds of thousands of years ago. Due to an influx of human visitors, the cave is filled with huge piles of litter, including plastic bottles and wrappers. In the footage, explorers can be seen staring in horror as they cast a torch around the multicoloured rubbish mountains. Over more than a decade, the debris was discarded by park visitors before eventually ending up in the cave, authorities believe. Disgraceful new footage reveals a look inside one of the ancient natural caves at the site, which was formed hundreds of thousands of years ago Officials say that some plastic water bottles found inside the cave date to 2015 – indicating that the pollution has been building up for a while. The cave is also now filled with murky water and sewage, which has 'produced an unbearable stench', reports Need To Know, citing local press. According to an investigation, the source of pollution is suspected to be the long-term illegal discharge of sewage by local farmers. The sewage and garbage has gradually built up in the descending cave like an overflowing toilet, spilling to the surface. As a result, it has flowed into a nearby stream, sparking concern among locals about the cleanliness of drinking water. The Ecology and Environment Bureau of Cili County has launched a district-wide investigation alongside authorities, the report adds. It's unclear exactly which cave it is at Zhangjiajie, but the park's natural voids are filled with incredible stalactites, hanging like an icicles from the roof. Stalactites are produced by precipitation of minerals from water dripping through the cave ceiling – and are different from stalagmites which rise from the floor. 'Avatar' took more than five years to make and was reportedly one of the most expensive films, with a budget of at least $300 million Zhangjiajie National Forest Park inspired the fictional jungle moon of Pandora – home to the blue-hued Na'vi people – in the 2009 James Cameron smash hit. The action-adventure movie, starring Sigourney Weaver, is set in 2154 and tells the tale of a disabled ex-Marine sent to Pandora to infiltrate a race of 10-foot (3-metre) blue aliens and persuade them to let his employer mine their homeland for natural resources. The film took more than five years to make and was reportedly one of the most expensive films, with a budget of at least $300 million. Avatar became the highest grossing film of all time after its release in 2009, beating Titanic, also directed by James Cameron, off the top spot. A year after the film, Zhangjiajie tourism bosses changed the name of the Qiankun Pillar to 'Avatar Hallelujah Mountain' and started to cash in with Avatar souvenirs. There's now an Avatar statue for people to pose with for photos, against the inspiring backdrop of striking sandstone and quartz cliffs. However, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park was already being turned into something of a tourist attraction before Cameron's successful film. It features the Bailong Elevator, opened to the public in 2002, which is the world's tallest outdoor lift, at 1,070ft (326 metres). An Avatar statue is seen at the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, a popular tourist destination - largely thanks to the film Like something from the streets of Beijing, the huge elevator can transport visitors to the top from its foot in less than two minutes. There's also three cable cars and a 1,410ft glass bridge for pedestrians (the highest in the world), opened in 2016. The park is also home to small villages and the 'air garden' – a startling rice terrace 1,000 metres (3,280ft) above sea level. In addition, it has free-roaming wildlife, including monkeys, which have been filmed pinching people's belongings.

Chongqing, in China, is described as a "planning and engineering aberration", thanks to the fact that the ground floor of one building, could be the 20th floor of another. 7 7 7 'In Chongqing, the ground floor could be on the 1st, 5th, or 10th floor, depending on which side you enter from' one local said. The city, which has been described as a "planning laboratory", has been built this way because it is situated amongst steep hills, cliffs and river valleys, where the ground height can suddenly change by hundreds of metres. Because of this, buildings in Chongqing, which is roughly the size of Austria, often have entrances on several different stories, depending on what level roads have been built on. Unlike a regular city, where things are built horizontally, roads, transport networks, and pedestrian walkways are all built on top of each other, a bit like a lasagne. Skyscrapers are often connected to each other using bridges and even rooftop parks, with schools and cultural centres built on upper levels of the city. Attempting to explain the complexities of the city, which is home to 32 million people, Hugh (@hughchongqing), a resident who offers tours of the city took to Tiktok to give viewers a virtual tour. "In Chongqing, we never know which floor we're on", he said in a video that has racked up over 27 million views. Starting off in one of the city's squares, Hugh explained that although it looks like just a 'normal square' on ground level, if you walk across the square you end up on a bridge 22 floors up. However, if you use the lift located on the square, it says you are on the 12th floor. Hugh took the lift down to the eighth floor, and ended up back on ground level. The tour guide then entered the building next door, where a sign on the lift told him he was on the 13th floor. He exited the building from the 13th floor, went in to the building next to it, crossed over a bridge which was suspended high in the air, and then, on the other side of the bridge, ended up back at street level. Hugh then went in to the next building along, took the lift to the fourth floor, and ended up back on street level again. The tour guide then showed footage of a train running straight through a building, suspended high in the air. Finally, he went into another building, took the floor to the 22nd floor, and ended up back on the square again. Hugh's video has likely left many people open-mouthed, as it has racked up over 3.2 million likes, and over 20 thousand comments. TikTokers raced to the video's comments section, to share their disbelief at the remarkable city. One person said: "How is this possible?" A second person said: "How does navigation work there?" A third added: "Imagine how hard it is to go by Google maps there!" 7 7 7
