Rail services between Birmingham, Hereford and Worcester cut
A number of train services between Birmingham, Hereford and Worcester are being temporarily cut, with a shortage of carriages blamed.West Midlands Railway (WMR) has halted four of its 48 daily services on these routes including a rush-hour morning train, with the changes starting on Monday and expected to last until early summer.The company was currently short of specialist parts needed to fix some carriages' wheels due to "a blip" in its supply chain, WMR public affairs manager Andrew McGill said."Our message to customers is: Please do bear with us, we're very, very sorry for this inconvenience," he told BBC Radio Hereford & Worcester.
The halted services include the 07:23 BST train from Worcester Foregate Street to Birmingham New Street, as well as the 17:50 train from Birmingham New Street to Hereford.The 19:50 train from Hereford to Birmingham New Street, plus the 22:00 service from Birmingham New Street to Worcester Shrub Hill, have also been withdrawn.Mr McGill said WMR hoped to have enough parts to begin reinstating services in June or July, but it was not yet possible to give an exact date."These are really specialist parts" and "it's not like Tesco has run out of something and you can pop to Sainsbury's to pick up what you need," he said.Mr McGill said WMR had considered all options before withdrawing the services, adding that the company still ran several services from Worcester to Birmingham for commuters in the morning peak period.
'Appalling train service'
West Worcestershire MP Dame Harriett Baldwin has written to WMR and asked it to review its decision, the Local Democracy Reporting Service reported on Sunday."The rail operator has failed to deliver a fit-for-purpose train service for many years, with successive managers blaming anyone but themselves for the appalling train service," Ms Baldwin said."I have asked the management to come up with a better plan that doesn't mean that commuters will simply stop to use the commuter service in the future."In a statement, WMR's engineering director John Doughty said the amended timetable had been brought in due to circumstances "outside of our control" and the company did not "take these decisions lightly".He added he was "very sorry" for any impact on customers.

Aplane bound for Gatwick airport crashed shortly after take off in India with hundreds of people on board. The Air India flight was departing from Ahmedabad airport, with 244 people onboard the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. Air India confirmed 53 of those aboard were from the UK. Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, director general of India's directorate of civil aviation, told the Associated Press the crash happened in the Meghani Nagar area at 1.38pm local time (9.08am BST). Mr Kidwai said there were 232 passengers and 12 crew members onboard. A Foreogn Office update reads: "We are aware of a plane crash in Ahmedabad. The UK is working with local authorities in India to urgently establish the facts and provide support to those involved. British nationals who require consular assistance or have concerns about friends or family should call 020 7008 5000." The FCDO already advises against all travel to parts of India. The FCDO advises against all travel within 10km of the India-Pakistan border. The Wagah-Attari border crossing is closed. FCDO advises against all travel to the region of Jammu and Kashmir (including Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, the city of Srinagar and the Jammu-Srinagar national highway). Curfews and restrictions continue in parts of Manipur following violent ethnic clashes that broke out in 2023. Intermittent incidents have continued and escalated in September 2024. Emergency teams have been activated at Ahmedabad airport. This is the first crash involving a Boeing 787 aircraft, according to the Aviation Safety Network database. A spokesperson for Air India said: 'Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest.' Flight tracking website Flightradar24 posted on social media platform X: 'We are following reports of a crash of Air India flight #AI171 from Ahmedabad to London. 'We received the last signal from the aircraft at 08:08:51 UTC (shortly before 9.09am BST), just seconds after take off. 'The aircraft involved is a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with registration VT-ANB.' Bogota earthquake as huge 6.3 tremor causes chaos at Colombia tourist attraction
The incident plunged the capital city into a state of panic as sirens blared and locals rushed from their homes. A huge earthquake has rocked Bogota causing chaos at a popular tourist attraction. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported that the strong 6.5-magnitude rumble and struck the Colombian capital city earlier today, just after 8am local time (2pm GMT). The quake struck at a shallow depth of 10km (6.21 miles), making it considerably stronger. No immediate casualtie s or large-scale damage have been reported at this stage, but the natural event plunged the city into a state of panic. Local media reported hearing sirens blaring around the area, urging locals to rush from their homes. Locals were seen flooding the streets to get out of the way of the shaking buildings, reports the Mirror. Street lights could be seen shaking and buildings cracking as the tremors continued to rumble on. The 6.1-magnitude quake reportedly hit the gondola lift system in Bogota, forcing a mass evacuation of the aerial transport cars. TransMicable carries as many as 7,000 people every hour in a luxury transportation system often frequented by tourists. Chaos ensued after the tremors, with TransMicable staff seen ushering guests away from the location. Writing on their page on X, the company said at 8:17am local time (2:17pm BST): 'Evacuation of TransMiCable begins due to a strong earthquake that occurred in Bogotá.' Colombia sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a portion of the world known for heavy seismic and volcanic activity. Back in 1999, a magnitude slightly weaker than today's (6.2) killed nearly 1,200 people in the country. It also caused devastating damage, mainly in the areas of Armenia and Perreira.

Mount Etna eruption sees flight warning issued to travellers
The tallest active volcano in Europe erupted on Monday leaving tourists terrified. Holidaymakers with plans to travel to Italy this week are being advised to check with their holiday provider following a volcanic eruption. Thousands of people are facing flight delays, cancellations after Mount Etna erupted in Sicily on Monday, June 2. Tourists were seen running for their lives after Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, started erupting at around 4am. Volcano reported that a volcanic tremor was felt before the eruption. The tremor began at around 10pm on Sunday evening before reaching a peak at 1am on Monday. The tremor was localised at an altitude of 2.8km beneath the crater area. Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology issued a statement at 11.03am local time (10.03am BST), on Monday saying: "Over the past few hours, the activity flagged in the previous statement issued at 4.14am (3.14am BST) has carried on with strombolian explosions of growing intensity that, at the moment, are of strong intensity and nearly continuous. Over the past few hours, the falling of a little thin ash has been flagged in the Piano Vetore area." Following the eruption, Sarah Rodrigues, a travel expert with Avanti travel insurance, has outlined practical steps travellers can take to protect themselves and recover any costs. She said: "Volcanic eruptions can have a huge impact on your holiday plans. If you're due to travel and find your trip will be affected by a natural disaster there are steps you can take to try to change your plans or to get a refund. 'The first thing you should do is contact the holiday provider you booked your trip with to see what support they can give you, as they may be able to provide an alternative, or to refund or reschedule your trip. 'If your holiday provider can't help you reschedule or refund your costs, you should contact your bank. You may be able to recoup your costs through a 'chargeback claim' if you paid using a credit card. 'If you've tried both options without any luck, then you may be able to claim through your holiday insurance . It's important to check your policy documents before cancelling a trip or if you decide not to travel, so check out the 'Travel Delay' section in your policy wording to find out if a natural disaster is covered."
