Matthew Schaefer is expected to be the first overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. But for the 17-year-old defenseman, draft night will be bittersweet. In just one year, Schaefer has lost his mother, billet mother, and a team owner-mentor—three key figures who shaped his journey.
Here's a look at the heartbreak behind hockey's brightest young prospect.

Draft journey becomes deeply personal
The NHL Draft is meant to be a celebration—a young player's first step toward professional greatness. For Canadian defenseman Matthew Schaefer, projected to go No. 1 overall in the 2025 NHL Draft, the moment comes with deep emotional weight.
In February 2024, Schaefer lost his mother, Jennifer, to breast cancer after a two-year battle. Despite her illness, she remained a constant source of strength and inspiration.
Schaefer often reflects on her positivity, saying, 'Just seeing what my mom went through, having a smile on her face with cancer and everything trying to bring her down, but she wouldn't let it bring her down. She's someone I look up to, really strong.
'
Matthew Schaefer's Unbelievable Story Of Adversity And Perseverance
Jennifer played a huge role in Schaefer's development, even acting as a goalie in the basement so her sons could practice. Schaefer remembers those moments fondly: 'When I'm shooting pucks in the basement, she's probably spiritually having the hockey equipment on, trying to save them.

I'm missing the net because she's probably blocker saving that.'
He carries her presence with him every time he steps on the ice. 'I know she has a front-row seat every game,' he said.
Back-to-back tragedies tested Schaefer's strength off the ice
Only three months before his mother passed, Schaefer lost his billet mom, Emily Matson, in a tragic accident. Matson, a local journalist in Erie, Pennsylvania, was killed by a train in what was ruled a suicide in December 2023. She had welcomed Schaefer into her family and home, offering him comfort and stability while he pursued his hockey dreams away from home.
Schaefer has also had to cope with the death of Erie Otters owner Jim Waters, who passed away from a heart attack in December 2024. Waters had bought the Otters in 2015 and quickly became a guiding force in Schaefer's hockey journey. 'Jim and his wife, Sheila, were two big parts of my life,' Schaefer shared.
Despite these unimaginable personal losses, Schaefer remains mentally strong. A collarbone injury kept him out of the final three months of his season, but he shrugged it off in the context of his grief. 'I've been through a lot in my life and I'd rather an injury than losing someone I love. There are a lot worse things than injuries.'

Cues from Birmingham nets: Uncertainty over Bumrah, Arshdeep vs captain Gill, batting coach sweats it out with tailenders
Team India during the net session in Birmingham. (Pic credit: Sahil Malhotra/ in Birmingham: The Indian cricket team had their first training session in Birmingham on Friday and the side sweated it out for over three hours on a very pleasant morning. The sun was out but wasn't harsh as the steady breeze kept the conditions comfortable for training. Shubman Gill & Co. reached the venue around 9:15 am local time and all players were in attendance for the first taste of Birmingham conditions. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Jasprit Bumrah travelled with the side but both him and Prasidh Krishna were absent from the net area. They did travel back with the side in the team bus but didn't make an appearance while the rest of their teammates were doing their share of batting and bowling. Bumrah and Prasidh didn't leave the stadium premises either. India Sweat it out at the Nets in Birmingham Ahead of the 2nd Test vs England Mohammed Siraj's outing was restricted only with the bat only as the seamer worked a lot on the skill with batting coach Sitanshu Kotak. There were plenty of drills for leaving, ducking and playing deliveries and he spent close to 30 minutes before leaving the nets and joining his fellow seamers inside. Poll What is your expectation for the Indian team's performance in the second Test? IC Markets Mendaftar Undo It has now become the most trending keyword in the Indian camp and will be repeated often in the build-up to the second Test as there is no clarity yet on ace pacer Bumrah's participation in the fixture. It's a call which will be taken by the bowler, in consultation with the medical team, and could well open or shut doors for the few waiting in the wings. Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh had long spells, both with bat and ball, and were closely watched by the support staff led by head coach Gautam Gambhir. Gill & Agarkar Strategise at the Nets | India's Batting Plan for 2nd Test vs England? Arshdeep has been spending a lot of time with the bowling coach Morne Morkel in the nets and the duo had worked overtime in Leeds to fine-tune left-arm seamer's run-up, back-foot landing and overall alignment. After almost every delivery, they exchange notes and remain constantly in each other's ears. From Leeds to Birmingham, it has been a similar story for Arshdeep in the nets as he continues to be chatty with Morkel and is always up for a battle with his Punjab teammate Gill in the nets. Gill turns to his old friend whenever he has to work on something specific and Arshdeep runs in full steam to test the right-hander in the nets. He maintains that intensity even during the long hit and is matched there by fellow seamer Akash Deep. If the Bumrah call is taken soon, one between Arshdeep and Akash will be drafted in the Playing XI as India would be in desperate need of a new ball bowler and the two have the required skill set to both control the shining red cherry, and make it talk. Still early days and a lot of time before the Test gets underway on July 2 but both seamers are hitting the right notes in the training and could make that decision very hard for the Indian team management. The answers to their will they, won't they lie in the outcome of Bumrah's will he or won't he? Akash in full flow can trouble the best in the business and Arshdeep could well be the surprise card up India's sleeve at the moment. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Tom Brady and Victor Wembanyama have major disagreement over Los Angeles Lakers veteran LeBron James' retirement
LeBron James, Tom Brady, and Victor Wembanyama. Image via: Getty Images LeBron James ' retirement has been a topic of conversation for a few years now. It has recently sparked a debate between NFL legend Tom Brady and San Antonio Spurs' superstar Victor Wembanyama. In a rare convergence of athletic icons, LeBron James, Tom Brady, and Victor Wembanyama shared a stage at the 2025 Fanatics Fest for a special live episode of The Shop. When the conversation shifted to James' retirement, it sparked an unexpected divide. While Brady pushed for LeBron to keep going, Wembanyama had a different forecast. Tom Brady and Victor Wembanyama split on how much longer LeBron James should lead the Los Angeles Lakers Even at 40, LeBron James is still delivering elite performances for the Los Angeles Lakers, averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists this past season. But for the man who's carried the NBA spotlight for over two decades, the question isn't whether he can keep playing, it's whether he should. Victor Wembanyama, the 21-year-old phenom from the San Antonio Spurs, didn't hold back when asked about LeBron's timeline. 'You might retire after me,' Wembanyama joked, earning laughs from the audience. He later added a more realistic projection: 'Two more years.' LeBron, sitting next to him, quipped in return, 'The more and more time that I play, as long as Wemby keeps smacking my f***ing shots into the stands, it's gonna make me retire. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Die schönsten Sport-Moderatorinnen der Welt - Weiterlesen Undo ' The playful back-and-forth has a subtle context. Truthfully, at his age, LeBron feels the weight of time, especially when faced with talents like Wemby. Still, he's shown little sign of actual decline, continuing to play at an astonishing level even as new stars rise to challenge him. Tom Brady, however, wasn't on board with Wembanyama's two-year window. The seven-time Super Bowl champion and longevity legend offered a different view: "He's gotta make those records truly unbreakable," Brady said. "He's worked so hard for so many years, and if he can push himself a little more, his records will be secured forever." LeBron already holds the all-time scoring record with 42,184 points in the regular season, and over 50,000 points total, including playoffs. That's uncharted territory in the NBA. He also boasts 21 All-Star selections, MVPs, and a staggering three-decade run of dominance. But Brady believes there's still more to be done. 'You're witnessing the greatest ever, and I hope you all appreciate that,' Brady added. He also praised LeBron's all-around career, saying, 'LeBron has always done things the right way. Be it his MVP-winning stint in the Olympics in Paris or playing for different teams. That, in his opinion, sets LBJ apart.'
