The University of Mississippi joins 14 other institutions in selective OpenAI initiative

Yahoo04-03-2025

The University of Mississippi is one of only 15 research institutions chosen to partner with OpenAI as a unique consortium which will provide AI tools to assist in research projects.
OpenAI, established in 2015 and co-chaired by Elon Musk and Sam Altman, is one of the most influential AI research organizations across the globe. The company will gift $50,000 to the University of Mississippi for research projects using the company's tools. The most widely known OpenAI tool is ChatGPT, a chat bot released in November of 2022.
The initiative, called NextGenAI, points to the University of Mississippi's established role as a leader in the growing AI space. Wes Jennings, co-director of the National Center for Narrative Intelligence at the University of Mississippi, said OpenAI was very selective in their choosing candidates and reached out directly to him in November of 2024.
The University of Mississippi is the only institution in the state on the list and is one of three SEC schools. As the initiative continues to grow, other institutions throughout the nation may be selected to join.
Other universities or institutions in the United States chosen include Caltech, the California State University System, Duke University, the University of Georgia, Harvard University, Howard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University and Texas A&M University. Partners also include Sciences Po in Paris, the University of Oxford, Boston Children's Hospital and the Boston Public Library, making 15 institutions total.
OpenAI announced the initiative Tuesday morning. In a press release, OpenAI Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap said NextGenAI will "accelerate research progress and catalyze a new generation of institutions equipped to harness the transformative power of AI.
"The field of AI wouldn't be where it is today without decades of work in the academic community," Lightcap said. "Continued collaboration is essential to build AI that benefits everyone."
In the same press release, Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development at University of Mississippi John Higginbotham said the new initiative will strengthen the university's mission.
"The NextGenAI partnership marks a significant step in the University of Mississippi's efforts tobuild on our existing expertise in artificial intelligence and explore new ways to integrate AI intoour core mission of education, research and service. This collaboration strengthens ourcommitment to innovation and positions our campus as a leader in advancing AI-drivensolutions that benefit our students, faculty and the broader community.'
Jennings, who will lead the initiative on the Ole Miss campus, said the $50,000 does not come with any requirements on how the money should be spent, so NextGenAI opens up a range of research possibilities.

A call for research project proposals from students and faculty will go out later this semester. Those chosen will spend the summer months working on the projects using OpenAI tools, and hopefully present findings in the fall, Jennings said.
"We've got plenty of people on this campus that are doing cutting edge and innovative stuff," Jennings said. "We're looking to kind of shake the trees and identify who's out there.
Beyond the research opportunities, Jennings sees this initiative as a way to educate students and faculty on AI, especially those who may be apprehensive or anxious about the concept. AI has been the center of constant debate both from an ethical and a practical standpoint. However, for better or worse, AI has become a part of daily life.
Jennings hopes to show researches that they can work with AI tools to make projects much more efficient, especially with time-consuming tasks.

"For example, if I was looking to do a traditional content analysis on perceptions of crime in the state of Mississippi, I would then historically talk with a couple colleagues of mine, bring a bunch of graduate students or undergraduate students on board... go through all the media stories, write it up, and then, two years later I have a paper," Jennings said. "Using AI, we can develop the methodology and scope pretty quickly and then use the AI in the natural language processing models to shift through all that instantaneously."
As AI continues to expand into every day life, initiatives like this are especially important to states like Mississippi which are often overlooked when it comes to resources, Jennings said.
"(The University of Mississippi) wasn't just picked out of a basket. They found us," Jennings said. "The fact that we can be in on the ground floor of something will shine a great spotlight onto our state."

BNB Price Climbs in Strong Rebound as Trump-Musk Spat Uncertainty Fades

BNB, the native token of the Binance ecosystem, staged a swift comeback after a jolt of market turbulence rattled the broader crypto market. The coin rose more than 4% from this week's low and is up around 0.7% in the last 24 hours, reversing from a dip to $631 to around $657 after forming a textbook V-shaped recovery pattern, according to CoinDesk Research's technical analysis data model. The rebound came as the uncertainty associated with a flare-up between U.S. president Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk that triggered a sell-off for risk assets started fading. BNB Chain's fundamentals have been improving. Daily active users jumped 26.4% to 1.2 million, while revenue in Q1 2025 grew 58% from the previous quarter to $70.8 million, according to a Messari report. Technical charts show BNB hit resistance around $657 after heavy buying at the $650 level. A critical pivot now lies at $654, with traders eyeing U.S. inflation data, due to be released this Wednesday, for cues on the next move. Meanwhile, Binance is leaning into innovation. Its June 9 hackathon opened new tracks in decentralized science and physical infrastructure. Apple admits to delays in Siri AI overhaul at lackluster WWDC presentation: ‘Overall a yawner'

Apple admitted it needs more time to complete its long-delayed overhaul of the Siri voice assistant – the latest sign that CEO Tim Cook is struggling to meet investor demands for innovation in artificial intelligence. The Cupertino, Calif.-based firm revealed bumps in AI development on Monday at its Worldwide Developers Conference, a yearly event that used to represent the cutting edge with software engineers — but which lately has lost its cachet. 'This work needed more time to reach our high quality bar and we look forward to sharing more about it in the coming year,' Apple software chief Craig Federighi said regarding the delays to Siri's AI overhaul. Getty Images Apple unveiled plans to allow app developers to use the large language model that powers its AI systems, dubbed 'Apple Intelligence.' Apple also announced a sweeping design overhaul of its operating systems featuring a sleek new look called 'Liquid Glass.' Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, an Apple bull, said the event showed 'slow and steady improvements' but was 'overall a yawner.' Advertisement 'WWDC laid out the vision for developers BUT was void of any major Apple Intelligence progress as Cupertino is playing it safe and close to the vest after the missteps last year,' Ives said in a note to clients. During the event, Apple touted a 'live translation' tool that works for real-time conversations. The company also plans to rename its operating systems updates based on the year they are released, rather than the sequential numbers they've used in the past. 5 Apple shares fell slightly in trading during the presentation. AP Elsewhere, Apple unveiled a 'Call Screening' in which iPhones will automatically answer calls from unknown numbers and ask the caller why they called. The company is also partnering with OpenAI's ChatGPT to add image generation to its 'Image Playground' app. Advertisement Apple shares were down more than 1% during the keynote presentation. 'Has there actually been an exciting WWDC in the last decade?' X user @MikeYelovich wrote in a post. 'This feels like what ChatGPT thinks people want from Apple.' Analysts had widely expected this year's event to be underwhelming, with minor software improvements, such as an AI-powered writing assistant, taking center stage. 5 Apple software chief Craig Federighi said the Siri enhancements 'needed more time. Getty Images Advertisement 'There's no way Writing Tools is the first apple intelligence thing they brag about at wwdc,' joked Interaction co-founder Marvin von Hagen. 'Every single time i've seen this menu was against my will.' The company also detailed enhancements to its 'Visual Intelligence' app, which allows users to seamlessly identify products through their iPhone cameras. Federighi said the plan to open up Apple's 'Foundation Models framework' to developers and users would have a transformational effect – allowing them to use an advanced AI model without even needing an internet connection. 'This will ignite a whole new wave of intelligence,' said Federighi, who cited examples such as apps using the AI model to recommend nearby hiking trails or create practice exams for students. 5 Apple CEO Tim Cook addresses the crowd at WWDC. AP Despite the lukewarm reception, Apple is still in an 'enviable position given its large installed base of users' and still has time to catch up to its rivals, said Paolo Pescatore, an industry analyst and founder of research firm PP Foresight. Apple is focused on ensuring its major AI products are ready for prime time rather than risk a backlash from its fans. Advertisement 'While it might seem others are leading the AI race, it is not a sought-after feature among users and there's no revenue uplift – for now,' said Pescatore. 'Considering the negative perception, Apple needs to tread carefully not to frustrate and disappoint its loyal base of iPhone users.' Apple is locked in a fierce competition with rivals like Google and Sam Altman-led OpenAI – the latter of which recently acquired famed iPhone designer Jony Ive's firm with an eye toward developing its own hardware product built specifically for AI. OpenAI Fights Court Order Requiring It to Store Deleted ChatGPT Conversations Indefinitely

OpenAI is appealing a court order requiring it to store deleted ChatGPT conversations "indefinitely." The court order was issued as part of The New York Times' copyright lawsuit against OpenAI, where it has been accused, alongside Microsoft, of using the newspaper's articles to train its artificial intelligence models. In a statement, OpenAI chief operating officer Brad Lightcap described the court order as one that "fundamentally conflicts with the privacy commitments we have made to our users. It abandons long-standing privacy norms and weakens privacy protections." He added that the company believes that The New York Times has overreached with this court order and that OpenAI will continue to appeal the decision. According to The Verge, OpenAI in May was forced by the court order to preserve "all output log data that would otherwise be deleted," even if a user requests the deletion of a chat or if privacy laws require OpenAI to delete data. OpenAI said it filed a motion requesting that the magistrate judge reconsider the preservation order, adding, "Highlighting that indefinite retention of user data breaches industry norms and our own policies." Products impacted by the court order include ChatGPT Free, Plus, Pro, and Team subscription, or if users use the OpenAI API (application-programming interface) without a Zero Data Retention agreement. Excluded from this arrangement are customers using ChatGPT Enterprise or ChatGPT Edu. OpenAI noted that the deleted data will not be automatically shared with The New York Times and that it has been securely stored, accessible only under strict legal protocols.
