Owner of fire-ravaged Scots garage claims three businesses are gutted by blaze
It is understood the fire ripped through scrapyard Wishaw Auto breakers and has caused extensive damage to three buildings and a number of vehicles on the yard.
The owner of a fire-ravaged Scots garage has said he has no idea what caused the devastating blaze which is understood to have gutted three businesses in a Motherwell industrial estate.
Mindagas Virketis told Lanarkshire Live a huge fire erupted at a car repair centre in Biggar Road Industrial estate which has now spread to neighbouring businesses and is believed to have destroyed three premises under his tenancy.
It is understood the fire ripped through scrapyard Wishaw Auto breakers and has caused extensive damage to three buildings and a number of vehicles on the yard.
Scottish Fire and Rescue have confirmed no one was injured in the incident.
Firefighters were on the scene at the industrial estate in Cleland on Tuesday afternoon, where flames and thick plumes of smoke could be seen billowing into the sky.
Police urged people to avoid the area as a road closure was in place at the junction with Bellside Road.
Mr Virketis, who was there when the fire started, said: "We don't know what has caused this, we're still trying to find out.
"I'm the owner and I was there when the fire started. I'm renting the building to tenants who were not there.
"I saw the shutters were closed and wanted to find out if anyone was in the garage so I phoned the tenants.
"Everything was burned before the firefighters started putting water on it. They couldn't get a supply of water because there's no water supply in the industrial estate so it took one hour-and-a-half to get the water from the main road which is what has caused the big fire.
"It's a car repair garage that went on fire - three different businesses under the one roof and I don't know how many cars. It looks accidental but we will hopefully find out what's happened in the next day or two."
Local councillor Louise Roarty, depute leader of North Lanarkshire Council, shared a video of the blaze and claimed fires are a "regular occurrence" at the site.
She added that the fire service attended the fire "within minutes".
She said: "It's a regular occurrence unfortunately. I thought at first it was tyres on fire, until I received the drone footage. Nobody has been injured and that's the main thing.
"The fire service was there within minutes."
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 9.37am on Tuesday, May 27, to reports of a building fire in Cleland, near Motherwell.
"Operations Control mobilised six appliances to the town's Biggar Road, where firefighters were met by a fire involving an industrial unit.
"Crews remain on scene working to extinguish the fire.
"There are no reported casualties."
A police spokesperson said: "Emergency services are dealing with a fire at Biggar Road Industrial Estate, Motherwell.
"The road is closed at the junction with Bellside Road. Motorists and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area."

Elise Kinnell and Holly Urquhat were rushed to hospital following the terrifying crash. Two Scots teens have relived the terrifying moment they were hospitalised in a horror crash. Elise Kinnell, 17, and Holly Urquhart, 16, from Edinburgh were passengers in a car on Linkfield Road, Musselburgh last Thursday when it suddenly did a 'full 360 spin' before ploughing into a parked tractor. Elise managed to free herself from the mangled wreckage before flagging down passing vehicles to help Holly who was unconscious in the back seat. Elise, from Niddrie, said: "I was out with two friends and we were coming along the road. As we got to the bend, I just went blank cause I knew something was going to happen. He went right into a fork thing, like a tractor, and my whole passenger door came in on me. The windscreen smashed on top of me and my window at the door came through. "It happened within minutes because of the way the car spun. The whole car just did a whole 360 and that was us. By luck the engine turned off itself but there were no airbags so I was unprotected. "By luck, I was still awake and aware of what had happened, so I took my seatbelt off and I flung myself out the driver's door. My friend was unconscious in the back. My Apple Watch had phoned the police, it was an SOS, because of the crash. I got out of the car, I was lying on the floor trying to wave people down as much as I could for help because I just didn't feel right." While Elise was bravely trying to flag down help, Holly was lying passed out in the back seat of the car. A hero passer-by eventually pulled her out of the crumpled vehicle before she regained consciousness. Holly said: "All I remember is me waking up on the pavement. The guy was standing a bit back and there was police, I think, around me, telling me to just lie down and stay still, this and that, making sure I was alright. I did not know a crash had even happened. "My main priority was obviously - I'm not gonna lie to you, I was in like a lot of pain - but all I cared about was making sure my pal was alright." The pair were taken to hospital for treatment but thankfully escaped without serious injuries. Elise suffered bruises while Holly underwent scans for a concussion. Elise continued: "I was told I was very lucky that I didn't lose my life." Now the teens are searching for the mystery man that helped them that night. Elise said: "I just want to thank the man that helped us because if it wasn't for him, I don't know what state would be in. He went and he actually got into the car. The driver's door was open and there was no glass on the driver's side so he was able to get my friend that was unconscious and help her out. "I waved so many people down and no one stopped for me and at that point I just didn't, I didn't know what was gonna happen. I thought I was going to die but the way the man came over to help, it just describes him as a person. He's been our lifesaver. If it wasn't for that man I'd have been dead. "I thought that I was about to take my last breath, but by luck I was able to survive and I don't know what would have happened if it wasn't for that man who pulled over in the middle of the road." Holly, from Prestonfield, said: "It means a lot because if he wasn't there, I don't know if I would be here. I got told if I wasn't pulled out, if the ambulance wasn't there and the police wasn't phoned, me and Elise would be dead." Cara, Holly's mum, also praised the mystery good samaritan for coming to her daughter's aid. She said: "I want to thank him a lot because it's any parents' worst nightmare to get a phone call to say their kids in a car crash, but to know that someone was actually there to stop and take the time to help and make sure that they're OK, not everyone's gonna do that." Holly and Elise are asking the man who helped them to reach out to them through Elise's sister's Facebook post, or by contacting Police Scotland. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'A 20-year-old man was charged in connection with a crash which happened on Linkfield Road, Musselburgh. "The incident happened around 12.45am on Thursday, 29 May, 2025 and involved a vehicle and a tractor. "The man and two passengers in the vehicle were taken to hospital for treatment. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

CCTV footage captured the moment a runaway horse sprinted through a Dumbarton street and slammed in to a car at a junction A runaway horse damaged a car as it galloped through a Scots town centre at the weekend. Stunned locals watched on as the horse bolted along Dumbarton's High Street on Sunday afternoon - with the animal slamming in to the side of a car at a junction. Luckily, the horse appeared to walk away uninjured and seemingly unfazed by the carnage left behind. The dramatic incident happened at around 2.35pm on Sunday and was captured on CCTV from Dumbarton Harp Social Club. In the shocking footage, the horse appears from nowhere, running at speed. It then disappears behind a van waiting to pull out from the junction. As the van pulls away, the horse is then seen slamming in to the passenger side of a grey car which was also waiting to pull out from the junction. The car was hit with so much force that it was briefly lifted up on to two wheels as it rocked back and forth. Footage later showed the side of the car damaged, with dents along the door and side panel. Locals then managed to get the horse under control as baffled onlookers tried to piece together the events. It remains unclear where the horse came from and how it came to be bolting along the busy street at such speed. The shocking clip has been viewed more than 48,000 times on social media. Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
