Ten killed as bus rams vehicles at Philippine toll gate

Manila - Ten people were killed and another 37 injured when a bus ploughed into vehicles waiting at a toll gate in the northern Philippines on May 1, police said.
The bus set off a chain reaction involving multiple stopped vehicles after first slamming into a sports utility vehicle, the authorities said.
Police told AFP the driver of the bus admitted falling asleep at the wheel before the crash near Luzon island's Tarlac City.
'Per the initial interview by our investigators... the driver said he fell asleep and was woken up to the scene of crashed vehicles,' said Colonel Romel Santos of the Tarlac City police.
Four minors were among those killed in the accident, he said.
The crash happened as freeways were filled with families heading to and from Labour Day holidays.
Both the driver and conductor had been taken into custody, Mr Santos said, with the former facing a potential charge of 'reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicides'.
Investigators were still waiting at a local hospital for relatives to identify the victims taken there, he said.
The extent of injuries suffered by survivors was not yet known.
Deadly road accidents are common in the Philippines, where drivers frequently flout the rules and vehicles are often poorly maintained or overloaded. AFP

The clean up efforts come after protesters clashed with the Los Angeles Police Department, other law enforcement personnel and ICE agents amid ongoing immigration sweeps in Southern California. The protests reached a boiling point on June 8 as multiple vehicles, including a California Highway Patrol cruiser, were set on fire. Police fired tear gas into the crowds. Los Angeles television station KTLA reported several businesses in the downtown area, including a cell phone retailer and a clothing store, were looted and vandalised overnight and in the early morning hours. Los Angeles Public Library said it would close its branches in downtown, Chinatown and Little Tokyo due to the protests. Russia's new drone strikes hit Kyiv, maternity ward in Odesa, Ukraine says
KYIV - Russia launched another large drone attack on Ukraine, striking Kyiv and damaging a maternity ward in the southern port of Odesa, regional officials said early on Tuesday. The overnight attacks follow Russia's biggest drone strike on Ukraine on Monday - part of intensified operations that Moscow said were retaliatory measures for Kyiv's recent brazen attacks inside Russia. Medics were called to four districts of Kyiv a couple hours after midnight on Tuesday, including the historic Podil neighbourhood, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging app. The military said the strikes were still ongoing and urged people to seek bomb shelters. The full scale of the attack was not immediately clear. "Enemy drones are simultaneously attacking several districts of the city," Timur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration said on the Telegram messaging app. "There is damage to residential buildings and fires. Rescuers are working at the sites." Reuters' witnesses heard a series of loud explosions throughout the city. In the southern port of Odesa, a "massive" drone attack targeted an emergency medical building and a maternity ward, as well as residential buildings, Oleh Kiper, governor of the broader Odesa region said on Telegram. Regarding the maternity hospital there were no casualties and patients and staff were evacuated, Kiper said. He posted photos of broken windows in what looked like a medical facility and of damages to facades of several buildings. Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war that Russia launched against Ukraine more than three years ago. PHOTO: AFP Chinese man in US pleads guilty to exporting arms to North Korea WASHINGTON - A Chinese man pleaded guilty on June 9 to exporting guns and ammunition to North Korea, the US Justice Department said. Shenghua Wen, 42, who was living illegally in the United States after overstaying his student visa, was charged with violating long-standing US sanctions against North Korea. Wen, arrested in California in December, was paid US$2 million (S$2.57 million) by North Korea for the arms shipments, the Justice Department said. Wen and unidentified co-conspirators allegedly concealed firearms and ammunition inside containers that were shipped from Long Beach, California, through Hong Kong to North Korea. The Justice Department said law enforcement in August seized two devices at Wen's home that he planned to send to North Korea – a chemical threat identification device and a handheld broadband receiver that detects eavesdropping devices. In September, law enforcement seized 50,000 rounds of 9mm ammunition that Wen allegedly obtained to send to North Korea, the department said. Wen also attempted to obtain a civilian plane engine from a US-based broker, it said. Wen faces up to 20 years in prison for violating export controls as well as a maximum of 10 years in prison for acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government.
