Learner wins bicycle in Laerskool Panorama pop-a-balloon competition
Laerskool Panorama recently ushered the learners into yet another thrilling session of their pop-a-balloon competition, which got learners winning incredible prizes.
On May 23, the school community engaged in a fun-filled activity that was introduced on May 16 and will be taking place every Friday until June 11.
The learners have to pay an amount of R10 to pop a balloon, and were allowed to buy as many balloons as they wanted. The most exciting part is that each balloon contains a prize, which is all a mystery until the balloon is popped.
From small treats to even bigger rewards, every learner who pops a balloon is guaranteed to win something.
'The event is open to all learners in the school, and many have been taking advantage of the opportunity to win exciting prizes,' said Marilein Hauzer, one of the organisers of the competition.
One lucky learner, Kgomotso Makoea, won a skateboard and a bicycle, sparking so much excitement among his peers.
Marilein explained that at the end of the competition, the parents will also get to take part in a special raffle and a pop-a-balloon, especially for them.

SA musicians TxC and Dlala Thukzin motivated by BET nod
They spoke to Sowetan about preparing for the big night and what the nomination means for their careers. What does the nomination mean for your career? TxC: It's a win for us and the entire journey we have been in together as a DJ duo. Dlala Thukzin: Such motivation is vital for my growth and is a confirmation I am headed in the right direction. I hope to keep improving so I can do more for music culture. What would you say earned you the prestigious nomination? TxC: We spend 80% of our time performing outside the country and we believe the recognition comes from that. The first time we went viral, it was internationally as well. We also do a lot of global collaborations. Dlala Thukzin: Being myself and trying not to emulate someone else's sound. From AmaGear to Sohlala Sisonke and many more, what goes into creating hit after hit? What is the recipe for creating a hit song? Dlala Thukzin: I travel a lot, listen and get to understand the idea of what people respond to. The message in the music I make is the most important thing. People need to stay motivated. In an era where amapiano and Afro beats seem to be the biggest genre, how does it feel for you to be the only gqom/house artist nominated for a BET Award? Dlala Thukzin: Times have changed. It is motivation vital for the movement and house music artists as a whole. We are seeing gqom rise to the forefront again. What would you say was the disconnect and what is making the genre rise? Dlala Thukzin: A lot of producers started lacking creativity and everyone was producing the same sound. The sudden rise is caused by everyone going back to their original creativity and adding vocals to the music. You are active on social media and have teased songs there. How has social media helped your brand grow? TxC: The dance challenges on TikTok and other platforms have assisted a lot in pushing our songs and making them reach a global stage. Social media is perfect for testing out a new sound because that's where you get confirmation and feedback on whether your song is a hit. Apart from your music, fashion is another element that stands out about TxC. Who designs your outfits and what inspires them? TxC: Tarryn is the fashion guru and she comes up with all our outfits. She comes up with ideas on how we can look better. How are you preparing for the BET Awards? Dlala Thukzin: There's no specific preparation. It is our normal daily routine until the day arrives. TxC: It will be our first time attending the awards ceremony so we will be going all out. Expect to see us in South African designs accompanied by gorgeous hair and makeup. We want to look our best.

Guides to walk and picnic
Get your walking shoes on and explore the Ivungu River Conservancy this Saturday (7th). The guiding fraternity celebrates 115 years this year, and to mark this successful milestone the Port Shepstone Teddies, Brownies, Girl Guides and Rangers collectively aim to walk 115km. Bring the family and friends and join the Girl Guides for a walk in nature followed by a picnic. All ages are welcome and the entrance fee is R10 per person. Funds raised go towards the conservancy. On a different note, the teddies and brownies have been 'busy bees' selling biscuits at R30 a packet. There are five different flavours to chose from. The girls are fundraising towards camping equipment. Panda Jolene Evans said the support has been amazing so far, and already the girls have sold more than 500 packets of biscuits. Elliana Olver (Brownie) and Briella Olver (Teddy) aim to sell 100 packets to get their badges. Both agree that the biscuits are delicious with the 'sprinkles' and 'choc chip' flavours being their favourite. If you would like to support the Guides, contact Panda on 072 148 5524. 'So, I'm very happy that she's admitting to having that done but I think a year ago she said she regretted it,' the celebrity plastic surgeon said. In one of the episodes of 'The Kardashians' in 2023, the beauty mogul admitted that she wished she never got her breasts done. Dr Dubrow added: 'So the message you're giving out … I think she should say it's great, but I think it's important that she caution people. She had it at age 19. Age 19 is not cool to have a breast augmentation, right? It's pretty young.
