Mumbai couple harasses pizza delivery man for not speaking Marathi. Video sparks outrage

Hindustan Times14-05-2025

A couple in Mumbai was filmed harassing a pizza delivery agent for not being able to speak Marathi. In footage that has been widely circulated online, fanning the regional language row, the couple was seen repeatedly asking the pizza delivery agent to speak in Marathi even as he protested that he did not know the language.
According to an NDTV report, the incident took place on Monday at the Sai Radhe building in Bhandup, a suburb of Mumbai.
When pizza delivery agent Rohit Lavare landed at the couple's doorstep to deliver the pizza they had ordered, the couple reportedly began asking him to speak Marathi.
Their message to the delivery agent was clear: Speak Marathi or you will not be paid.
'Zabardasti hai Marathi bolne ka? Par kyun? (Is there some compulsion to speak Marathi? But why?' Lavare was seen asking in the video.
'Hai yahan pe aise hi hai (That's how it is here),' the woman replied, to which he shot back: 'Kaun bola aise hi hai? (Who says this is how it must be?)'
The delivery agent – associated with a popular pizza chain – was heard getting frustrated as the couple refused to pay. 'Nahi aata toh phir nahi order karne ka na. Nahi dena hai na paisa, haan theek hai, theek hai (If this was your condition then you shouldn't have ordered. You don't want to pay? Fine, fine),' he was heard saying.
The row escalated when the couple apparently claimed that the food they ordered was spoilt and refused to pay. The woman was also heard telling the delivery executive that he could not record them, while she could record him.
According to NDTV, the delivery agent had to eventually return without the money he was owed.
The video has sparked outrage online, with public opinion largely in favour of the delivery agent.
'As a Marathi I apologize to all Indians. This is not us,' wrote one X user. 'This Linguistic virus started in Tamil Nadu, then moved to Karnataka and now in Maharashtra. All these states are neighboring each other,' another said.
'What a shameless couple. Harassing a poor hardworking delivery guy. On a, flimsy pretext they are trying to get that pizza for free. Happy to see that the guy too is not relenting,' a user said.

Bank accounts of Indians getting frozen in US before deportation? Viral post sparks speculation amid Trump's crackdown

A social media post sparked fear and speculation on X as the user claimed that an Indian immigrant recently told him that a lot of Indians are getting their bank accounts frozen before getting deported. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The post suggested that freezing bank accounts is a sure sign of deportation. "I didn't even know this was happening but I support it 100%," the user posted, drawing cheers from Americans who has been championing for mass deportation in the wake of the Los Angeles riots. The Donald Trump administration has cracked the whip on people overstaying their visas in the US and they did not even spare famous TikToker Khaby Lame. The LA riots, too, have their source in the immigration issue as the protests started against ICE raids on illegal Mexicans staying in LA. There have been some reports of illegal aliens getting their accounts frozen before their deportation, but there is no confirmation on what has been claimed in the viral post -- as a systematic procedure of deportation. Users in the comment section raised questions as to whether these people, whose bank accounts are getting frozen came into the US legally or not. "Many were given endless H-1B extensions as they were on a long waiting list for a Green Card. Which is insane cuz it makes the Green Card just a formality. And its not. Trump has restored order and if your visa runs out, you have to leave NOW. Many thought they could slide, nope," one wrote. "My husband works for a well known company and apparently they have an Iranian employee who just got notice that he's being sent back, so I know this is happening on some scale. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He told me another nationality, too, but I can't remember where that person came from," another person shared what she knows about those. The post came at a time when a video of an Indian student being handcuffed and deported from Newark Airport created much shock and anger among Indians. The US embassy in India issued a statement amid the row over the video and said the US welcomes legitimate travelers while illegal entry, abuse of visas or the violation of US law remain punishable.

Murder, matrimony, and melodrama: A honeymoon in Meghalaya ends in horror

A tragic murder takes place in Meghalaya while a young couple from Madhya Pradesh is on their honeymoon. The girl goes missing, and they find the mutilated body of her husband. We come to know there is a lover who could have collaborated with the wife. Scary. The sister of the poor guy is an Instagram influencer who's asking for justice for her brother with melodramatic music, while also promoting massage salons. Meghalaya Police claims to have solved the case in 17 days. No, this is not the teaser for the third season of Pataal later came to know they got married on the same day India was bombing strategic air bases in Pakistan. It goes to show how much mainland Indians underestimate the capabilities of the Pakistani armed forces. No kamikaze drones. No ballistic missiles. Only a wiry guy with a mic in hand, atop a carriage, belted out 'Aaj mere yaar ki shaadi hai,' causing mass destruction to the eardrums in a 100m blast radius. The astrologer has given the auspicious date; there is no postponing. World War III could they went on with their celebrations, not sharing the same urgency as Mr. Trump, who saved the baraat from a 'major catastrophe.' 'They never give me enough credit,' Trump says, rightly so, like the foofa ji at the same wedding. What's most interesting is how quickly this took over pop culture. It even stamped over the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) news cycle. Murders are commonplace, especially post-familial discord. Just pick up any regional newspaper and turn to page 4; you'll find material worth four seasons of crime dramas. So what's different here?advertisementFor starters, it fits in well with the recent wave of men's rights advocacy. The advocates feel vindicated. It bolsters the case where they claim it's the norm rather than an outlier, where men are routinely harassed in cases of alimony abuse and divorce blackmail. It was reignited by Johnny Depp and locally taken forward by the sad end of Atul Subhash. Above all, it's a man bites dog story. Parle-G-fed dogs biting men are common, but the real journalistic story comes out when a man bites a dog. This is that there is enough online footage to go through. The sister of the deceased, who's an Instagram influencer, has shared a lot of content on her page, where OSINT individuals, who till yesterday were looking for the exact spot where we hit the Kirana Hills, are now combing through wedding videos to see signs of evil on the face of the chief accused as she was taking pheras. There are enough free man-hours in India, where people willingly lend their sleuthing skills to subsequent news cycles. The author of this column is no exception. After consuming that financial independence snake oil, he now devotes time to dissecting such stuff via long write-ups. The one who's read this and made it this far is also a willing collaborator. So we're even. Ha!advertisementThe image that haunts me is the one where the mother of the murdered guy is pleading with the media to let her go, as they hound her with their microphones, like vultures poking with their sharp beaks. I know people are doing their job, but someone at the top, the media bosses, should instruct them to take a step back. Thanks.(Abhishek Asthana is the founder of a creative agency – GingerMonkey. Mangalsutra, Tour Guide's Statement, Vrat Phone Call: What Gave Sonam Away After Raja's Murder

Last Updated: Owing to a trail of subtle clues, the police uncovered a chilling murder plot involving his wife Sonam and four accomplices. The murder of Indore man Raja Raghuvanshi during a honeymoon in Meghalaya initially appeared to be a missing person case. But owing to a trail of subtle clues- a final phone call, a tour guide and a mangalsutra left behind- police uncovered a chilling murder plot involving his wife Sonam and four accomplices. Tour Guide's Testimony Local tour guide Albert Pde told police that on the morning of May 23, he saw Sonam and Raja near Mawlakhiat, accompanied by three unidentified men. This sighting- verified using call data records and location tracking- was the final known moment Raja Raghuvanshi was seen alive making the police move away from the case being about the couple's disappearance. Mangalsutra Left Behind During a search of the couple's homestay room, investigators found Sonam's mangalsutra and a ring. Deputy Inspector General DNR Marak told NDTV, 'That raised our first doubt—how can a married woman leave her mangalsutra behind during a honeymoon?" Raja Raghuvanshi's Last Phone Call Sonam called Raja Raghuvanshi's mother on May 23 which was Gyaras, a fasting day, in which she said that the couple were on a trek to a waterfall. When urged to eat something, Sonam replied, 'Ghumne ke chakkar main vrat thodi tod dungi" (Just because I'm vacationing, I won't break my fast). She sounded short of breath during the call and ended it abruptly, Raja Raghuvanshi's mother said. Raja Raghuvanshi and Sonam tied the knot in Indore on May 11. Just days into their honeymoon in Meghalaya, they were reported missing on May 23. Ten days later, Raja Raghuvanshi's body was recovered from a deep gorge near a waterfall in Sohra in the East Khasi Hills district. Sonam, who was initially reported as missing, resurfaced in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur on June 2, where she surrendered. Raj Singh Kushwaha believed to be Sonam's lover, was caught later. All five accused have now been brought to Shillong by Meghalaya Police and produced in court.
