The best lightweight running shoes for warm weather training, according to podiatrists
When you're looking to beat the heat, hit a personal record or even just meet your step count for the day, swapping your sandals for lightweight running shoes is one of the best exercise ideas to help you stay active in the summer heat. And while selecting the perfect lightweight running shoes for your purposes — be it trail running or strolling — can feel daunting, a few careful considerations from the pros are all it takes to help you breeze through your summer cardio sessions with ease.
We tapped board-certified podiatrists to find out exactly what to look for in the best lightweight running shoes for warm weather training, along with the specific models they recommend shopping for a smoother run, walk or jog this summer.
Brooks Women's Launch 10 Neutral Running Shoes
'For patients who are into running […] I recommend Brooks' Launch 10 neutral running shoes,' said Dr. Michael Nirenberg, clinical and forensic podiatrist at Friendly Footcare in Indiana. With these sneakers, you can expect their breathable knit uppers to keep your feet dry during long-distance runs, as well as their traction-heavy rubber outsoles to keep you stable on all terrains.
Brooks Men's Launch 10 Neutral Running Shoes
The best part about these breathable running shoes? Their lightweight cushioning allows for quick transitions so you can stay comfortable and dry while maintaining speed. For an even more lightweight and responsive feel, Brooks just launched the Launch 11 that'll help launch you to new personal records with improved stability thanks to its lower heel-to-toe drop. Brooks Women's Glycerin 21 Road Running Shoes
'I recommend these because they are lightweight, have a wide toe box and provide good stability,' Nirenberg said. 'They're not too firm or rigid, yet also not too soft, providing a good mix of support and flexibility. I joke they are the Goldilocks of running shoes!' With their responsive and plush fit, the updated Glycerin 22 is also a smart low-bulk bet.

In our roundup of our favorite Brooks running shoes, we call out how perfectly suited these lightweight running shoes are for everything from a quick treadmill run to a several-mile-long training session ahead of race day. New Balance Women's FuelCell Rebel V4 Running Shoes
Dr. Adenike Sonaike, a podiatrist with Baker Street Health in Motion in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, loves these lightweight running shoes. These daily trainers by New Balance are by far the most lightweight out of her picks at around 168 grams in the average size, she said. Synthetic mesh uppers help keep the weight down so you stay light on your toes (and dry too).
New Balance Men's FuelCell Rebel V4 Running Shoes
Opting for these running shoes is a solid bet in high temps when you need some extra breathability and performance. The brand's signature FuelCell foam combines PEBA and EVA technologies, and will help provide the fuel you need to stay propulsive during your daily run, be it a recovery jog or sprint intervals (sprintervals?).Puma Women's Velocity Nitro 3 Running Shoes
If you experience excessive inward rolling of your heels, you may benefit from stability shoes from Puma's Nitro stability line to promote better alignment. Before your next warm weather run, be sure to grab Sonaike's lightweight pick for a smoother and more stable stride.
Puma Men's Velocity Nitro 3 Running Shoes
These stabilizing sneakers are free of extra bulk and instead offer stability at the heels along with breathable engineered mesh uppers and grippy rubber outsoles for further control as you crush those miles.Nike Women's Vaporfly 3 Running Shoes
You'd be hard-pressed to find shoes that offer this level of propulsion and lightness, but that's exactly what these Nike beauties achieved when we tried them. We appreciate not only their full-length carbon fly plates for a smooth and snappy stride but their flared midsoles for a touch of extra stability in featherlight shoes that weigh around 165 grams each.
Nike Men's Vaporfly 3 Running Shoes
While the Vaporfly 3 sneakers for men technically shine during race day, you'll find yourself reaching for them on the hottest of days, thanks to their "barely there" Flyknit uppers and offset laces that won't further squeeze your insteps. You can upgrade your running game with the newest iteration of the shoes, the Vaporfly 4, designed with even lighter midsoles, outsoles and uppers than its predecessor.Puma Women's Deviate Nitro 3 Running Shoes
Our experts agree nitrogen-infused foam is the key to keeping it light, so it's no surprise these Puma kicks are one of Sonaike's favorites. They're designed with nitrogen-infused foam midsoles and breathable uppers to make outdoor interval, tempo or long runs this summer a true walk in the park.
Puma Men's Deviate Nitro 3 Running Shoes
While these lightweight running shoes will make you feel like you're floating on clouds, they come at a reasonable price point compared to the competition. Running shoes that feature carbon footplates for more efficient energy return are hard to find for under $200. Brooks Women's Hyperion 2 Road Running Shoes
Got a need for speed? Don't sweat it. These Sonaike-endorsed sneakers have you covered this summer. Adding 4 more millimeters of cushioning than their predecessor had helps absorb impact during snappy runs while breathable uppers prevent foot sweats.
Brooks Men's Hyperion 2 Road Running Shoes
With an average weight of around 200 grams each, these lightweight running shoes help you go the extra mile even in peak summer temperatures, helping you mitigate foot sweat that can contribute to chafing and blisters.Hoka Women's Clifton 10 Running Shoes
The new-and-improved version of these editor-loved shoes is a year-round favorite for a reason. They provide unmatched comfort through impossibly plush midsoles, they fare well during both strength and cardio workouts, and they feature Hoka's signature rocker bottoms for smooth, efficient heel-to-toe transitions. Hoka Men's Clifton 10 Running Shoes
If you're looking for a lightweight pair of running shoes to beat the heat (and personal records), look no further than the Clifton 10, weighing in at just over a pound for the pair. Boasting an additional 3 millimeters of stack height over the previous model, the Clifton 9, you'll experience plush landings and improved comfort.Altra Women's Experience Flow Road Running Shoes
These aren't your run-of-the-mill lightweight running shoes. Clocking in at around 200 grams per shoe, these Altra runners will keep you feeling both light and dry on your feet. They boast the brand's signature wide toe boxes to accommodate swelling associated with skyrocketing temperatures or any foot deformities.
Altra Men's Experience Flow Road Running Shoes
The Altra Experience Flow running shoes offer ample breathing room, giving your toes extra room to splay, which helps you stay stable with every step. A low heel-to-toe drop creates a barefoot feel — perfect for enhancing your stride if you experience underpronation. On Women's Cloud X 4 AD Training Shoes
Clocking in at a featherlight 220 grams per shoe, these plush On Cloud X 4 AD shoes will have you floating on a cloud. Their allure lies in their elasticated laces that don't require tying, so you can race out the door for your next run or outdoor HIIT class.
On Men's Cloud X 4 AD Training Shoes
In these light and breathable running shoes, engineered mesh uppers keep feet cool and dry while roomy toe boxes help account for foot swelling. Plus, their signature pillowy CloudTec will keep you comfortable even in grueling temps.Saucony Women's Endorphin Pro 4 Running Shoes
At just 185 grams per women's shoe and 212 grams per men's, you'll wonder if you're wearing anything at all in the Endorphin Pro 4 — and that's exactly what you want when additional layers feel cumbersome under the sun.
Saucony Men's Endorphin Pro 4 Running Shoes
Thanks to their carbon plates, speeding through personal records will feel like child's play in these lightweight running shoes. Integrated tongues and heel liners help prevent chafing and foam-heavy midsoles provide unparalleled responsiveness without contributing to extra weight. Weight
When looking for the best lightweight shoes, it helps to identify a specific weight range to reduce bulk and improve comfort during hot weather. 'I consider a running shoe to be lightweight if it's less than or around half a pound (225 to 250 grams),' Nirenberg said.
Breathability
Sweaty feet can ruin a successful workout during the summer. Ensure your comfort (while warding off related conditions like athlete's foot) by opting for breathable fabrics. 'Materials for lightweight running shoes have become quite advanced now, and you should look for a shoe with fabrics engineered to allow for better airflow in order to help keep your feet cool during long runs,' Nirenberg said. Mesh and lightweight knit materials are popular choices to reduce perspiration while you work out.
Durable uppers
Your lightweight shoes for training shouldn't be flimsy but, instead, boast firm uppers, according to Sonaike. 'This will give stability regardless of the thickness of the sole,' she said.
Cushioning
For comfort and podiatric health, cushioning for shock absorption is your best friend when it comes to lightweight running shoes, according to Nirenberg. 'New foam technologies are now being implemented into running shoes,' he said. 'Look for a shoe with lightweight foam cushioning that can reduce the impact, which is especially important for runners who are heel strikers.'
Structure
Don't sacrifice structure for light weight. Sonaike said the shoe shouldn't bend easily in half. 'It should have some midfoot structure and should bend mostly at the toes,' she said.

I'm over 40 and there are some bathing suits I just won't wear. Here are my favorite styles instead
Over-40 swimsuits quick picks Scoop-neck one-piece: Skims Signature Swim Scoop-Neck One-Piece Tummy-control one-piece: Cupshe V-Neck Tummy-Control One-Piece Tankini: Bleu Rod Beattie Print Ruffle Tankini Bikini bottom: Summersalt The Wrap High-Leg High-Rise Bikini Bottom Square-neck one-piece: Hunza G Square-Neck Swim One-Piece There comes a time in a woman's life when she realizes she can no longer wear certain items of clothing. For me, that moment came when I was packing for a beach vacation and was met with a sea of skimpy bikinis in eye-catching Day-Glo colors that I'd accumulated over the years. These would not do. That's not to say women over 40 shouldn't wear bikinis; I simply don't feel comfortable in the two-pieces I was wearing in my 20s and 30s. So, in search of some more flattering swimwear for my upcoming trip, I decided to call in some experts to see what I should be looking out for. If I want swimwear that fits, flatters, feels fashionable and is actually comfortable, stylist Elisa Ellis of Turnkey Style said to focus on features like 'high-waisted bottoms, ruching or twist designs. When it comes to the bust area, molded cups, built-in support and adjustable straps are nonnegotiables.' She added that 'these small details can make a big difference in how the suit fits and how confident you'll feel in it.' After an extensive search, I found that spending a little extra money on swimwear really makes a difference in the quality and fit too, which was directly proportional to how confident and comfortable I felt at the beach or lying poolside. 'There's a myth that you need to be a certain size to rock a swimsuit,' Ellis said. 'The truth? Confidence comes from the right fit, not the size on the tag. Choose a suit that makes you feel good [and] gives you confidence, and you will shine.' So, with that in mind, here are my favorite swimwear styles for women over 40. Skims Signature Swim Scoop-Neck One-Piece Black is a girl's best friend when it comes to having a slim silhouette, and this Kim Kardashian's Skims one-piece did not disappoint. Fashion stylist Sarah Nearis said Skims is one of her favorite brands for swimwear. "The brands that really know how to flatter a real woman's curves use the best material that make you feel secure and snatched, and have the cuts that hit in the right places to elongate the figure," she said. I loved the high leg of this suit, which really helped make me feel (and hopefully look) taller. Cupshe Ruffled One-Piece Swimsuit 'Ruching is wildly underrated," Ellis said. "I personally look for swimsuits with ruching because they flatter the figure and create a contoured look without making you hold your breath." She also recommends styles with a twist-front design, which she said "draws the eye inward and often includes built-in shaping panels for the tummy area." I love this colorful offering from Cupshe, which also has frills around the neckline to draw attention away from the midsection. Factory Scalloped One-Piece Swimsuit When it comes to swimwear, I tend to gravitate toward black for its slimming effects. When you are trying to hide anything you don't like about your body, black helps discreetly camouflage. Sure, it's not the most tropical of colors, but it works. What I love most about this one-piece from is the scalloped edging. It gives this otherwise boring suit a little je ne sais quoi. The swimsuit is fully lined, adjustable and super flattering. Cupshe V-Neck Tummy Control One-Piece Swimsuit Just like black, a pattern covers a multitude of sins, and I love this Cupshe one-piece for its bright colors and fun pattern. It is also very supportive around the cleavage and has ruching around the midsection. This is fast becoming one of my favorite swimsuits. Summersalt The Wrap High-Leg High-Rise Bikini Bottom I know I said I was done with bikinis, but after consulting Ellis, she said there are still ways to incorporate them into your summer wardrobe. 'Just because you're over 40 doesn't mean you have to ditch bikinis or bold colors. But you do want to look for styles that offer the right fit, structure, support and coverage for your body today,' she said. This Summersalt wrap bikini bottom — and the matching top — is flattering in all the right places and comes in a variety of colors. Hunza G Square-Neck Swim One-Piece I can't say enough about this swimsuit. At first, I balked at the price, but once I put it on, I fell in love and felt so confident in it. The crinkle fabric is both comfortable and flattering, and I really love the scoop back and high-leg cut of this style. According to Nearis, Hunza G's crinkle material is similar to ruching or draping on a dress, providing both texture and a smoothing effect to the figure. "Usually the scrunched material has a firmness in elasticity that creates more security and support, which any gal can appreciate in swimwear," she our review Bleu Rod Beattie Print Ruffle Tankini Offering more coverage than a string bikini but with the flexibility of a two-piece, we love a tankini. This one is so fun and flirty with the ruffle neckline and vibrant print. Summersalt The Sidestroke One-Piece Swimsuit I've loved Summersalt's swimwear line ever since it launched in 2017. I used to own a ton of bikinis from this brand, and they have really maintained their quality over the years. They have since been donated to my 30-year-old niece. This one-shoulder number is comfortable, flattering and looks great on any size. Lands' End SlenderSuit Tummy-Control Wrap One-Piece 'This swimsuit is bust-friendly for those with fuller chests," Ellis said. "The Slendertex fabric offers light sculpting, while the twist detail adds a flattering shape.' Like most of Lands' End's swimwear, this is available in petite, tall and long torso sizes, and it often has sales on swimwear. Boden Ruched Loop Swimsuit This one-piece has everything; ruching, a pattern that elongates the torso, a middle loop that cinches in the waist, a halter neck for support and a vintage style that screams summer. I get so many compliments when I wear this, and it looks great with a pair of denim shorts. Bleu Rod Beattie Halter Tankini The contrast white trim on this otherwise plain tankini really makes it stand out. I love a monochrome look, and I felt so confident in this suit. "I am a huge believer in, if you feel confident in a piece of clothing, then you can rock it. Whether it be a swimsuit or any type of outfit, I think it is important to enhance your favorite features and really lean into that so you feel good and confident," Nearis said. TA3 Lifty One-Piece Swimsuit This was a personal recommendation from Nearis and is also loved by our fashion editor Sophie Shaw, who said this viral swimsuit is very much worth the hype. Along with its medium compression for the tummy area, the lace-up back acts like a corset so you can tighten the fit as much or as little as you wish. Plus, the colorblocking creates a slimming illusion. The following FAQs have been answered by fashion stylist Sarah Nearis. Are tankinis most flattering for women over 40? Are tankinis most flattering for women over 40? 'Tankinis can work at any age, it really comes down to the fit and style,' Nearis said. 'Swimwear and any clothing looks best when it is enhancing your best features and silhouette. Making sure the fit and material has the best support and design to flatter your body is key.' Do high-waisted swimsuits look good on everyone? Do high-waisted swimsuits look good on everyone? 'I love a high-waisted swimsuit, no matter the age. A high-waisted swimsuit really hits at the highest and smallest part of the waist, which enhances your natural curves and shape, and elongates the legs,' Nearis said. How do you hide lower belly fat in a swimsuit? How do you hide lower belly fat in a swimsuit? According to Nearis, you can hide your lower stomach with specific silhouettes or accessories. 'It's all about finding the right pair of bottoms or a one-piece with the right material or pattern to distract from the area,' she said. She also recommends layering a sarong or skirt over your swimsuit for added coverage. For this article, we consulted the following experts to gain their professional insights. Lululemon's new linen collection keeps you sweat-free all summer long
New gear drops every single week at Lululemon and this week we're stoked that its lightweight LuluLinen is finally here. As someone who tries to wear functional yet stylish athleisure wear during the summer, this linen clothing line aligns with exactly what I'm reaching for to wear on blistering hot days. We love shopping for new versions of classic silhouettes. Similar to its Align No Line launch back in May, the LuluLinen collection is comprised of similar designs that we know and love, but are updated with seasonal materials. Below are the men's and women's pieces. They come in a handful of neutral colors and, for the most part, range from sizes XXS to XXL. Lululemon Women's LuluLinen Relaxed Button-Up A breezy oversized button-up is dreamy for those days when you want to look presentable but feel extremely comfortable. It comes in a crisp white or light khaki and is long enough to cover your bum if you want to throw biker shorts underneath for a more casual look. Lululemon Women's LuluLinen High-Rise Shorts Splurge for the matching shorts if you're already getting the top. They come in an additional baby blue color if you want to tastefully clash and are a substantial six inches long to prevent your legs from chafing when dashing around the neighborhood. Lululemon Men's LuluLinen Pleated Trousers Still looking for the perfect gift for your hubby, dad or other father figure in your life? Look no further. These ultra-light pleated trousers are suitable for summer barbecues, dinners out on the town and even beach vacations. The hardest part will be choosing which earth tone to buy. Lululemon Women's LuluLinen Trousers As a trouser lover, I picture myself wearing these into the office with a mock neck top and ballet flats for a smart casual look. The bottom of the pant legs are cuffed and hemmed to avoid unnecessary tailoring. For those who avoid belts, these pants have an elastic waistband that stays put all day long. Lululemon Women's LuluLinen Oversized Blazer Channel your inner Paige DeSorbo with a drapey double-breasted blazer. It's suitable for cool days in the office or seaside walks and pairs nicely with the high-rise shorts and a cropped bra top. This blazer also covers your rear if you want to throw it over an athletic set or onesie post Pilates. Lululemon Men's LuluLinen Short-Sleeve Shirt Personally, I like the tailored look of the men's short sleeve versus the women's. It also comes in three different and lighter colors and a light blue that is the perfect beach pastel. Lucky for men's clothing wearers, it's also $10 less than the women's. Lululemon Men's LuluLinen Pull-On Shorts While linen is in the name, this new fabric wicks sweat better and is less prone to wrinkling. These casual shorts can take on vigorous walks and lifting sessions with ease and the roomy glute and thigh areas are perfect for those who need the extra inches. Lululemon Men's LuluLinen Long-Sleeve Shirt Ditch your go-to date night white tee for something a bit more refined. This long-sleeved button-up can be worn closed or open if you're leaning towards a more relaxed fit and comes in cream, blue and white. It's the perfect OOO and happy hour uniform that can be worn all season long. Lululemon Men's LuluLinen Pull-On Pants Pull-on pants are my go-to for a number of reasons. They look great with an active sandal like Tevas or Chacos and pair nicely with Birkenstock Boston Clogs. I adore the darker colors that these bottoms come in and appreciate the leg tapering for a more polished look. With Father's Day this weekend and summer weather heating up, it's the perfect time to stock up on reliable clothing pieces for yourself or a loved one before you need them the most. Keep in mind that there's never bad weather, just bad clothing so prepare for and look put together during the next heat wave with Lululemon's LuluLinen collection. Candace Cameron Bure is officially in vacation mode. On Wednesday, the "Full House" alum, 49, took to social media to share a series of photos from her tropical getaway with husband Valeri Bure. The first photo features the Great American Family star relaxing beachside in her string bikini, sunglasses and hat. Other photos include Candace hitting the gym, enjoying a boat ride and a summer bike ride with Valeri, and a relatable display of what heat and humidity can do to her hair. "Vacation mode: ON," she captioned the post, which was accompanied by the Beach Boys hit "Good Vibrations." "Enjoy friend you deserve it! And a workout IS a reward too!," one user commented. "I wish I had your commitment to working out. You look amazing," another wrote. Last month, Candace opened up about her goal of being in the "best shape" of her life as she enters her 50s next year. "That's what I'm working towards," she told Fox News Digital. "I've been filming a lot of movies, so I don't feel like I'm at my top right now because my fitness has to take a back seat while I'm filming movies, but I turned 49 this year and I have really big goals for myself just keeping active and healthy, but going into 50, I want to be in best shape that I can possibly be in." "So, my fitness game, once I finish this movie, at least in the gym, is going to kick it up a notch," she explained. "But honestly, I feel really great." Candace said she's been working on her fitness since she was in her early 30s, "and I'm in a groove, and I just want to approach life and aging as someone with grace, but also enthusiasm." "And leaning into all the things that I can do as I get older and preparing my body so that I can continue to do those things as I older," the actress told Fox News Digital. "Not so much from a vanity point of view, but like, you know, I want to be able to open the peanut butter jar when I'm 80, and I need grip strength for that. But all that comes from using your muscles and lifting weights and just basic skills." WATCH: CANDACE CAMERON BURE WANTS TO GET IN HER 'BEST SHAPE' AS SHE APPROACHES 50 She joked that she's not trying to age fast, "but it's the preparation of just being in the best shape that I can be as I get older."
