U.S. Updates Official Travel Warning for Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic is a popular resort destination for many U.S. tourists, who are drawn by the all-inclusive resorts, the beauty of the beaches, and the often affordable prices.
However, the U.S. Department of State is now warning U.S. citizens to exercise increased caution when traveling to the Caribbean nation.
On June 12, the State Department reissued the travel advisory for the country with minor edits. The country is at a Level 2 "exercise increased caution." The travel advisories are issued on a 1-4 scale, with 4 being the most dangerous level.
Before June 12, the Dominican Republic travel advisory hadn't been updated for almost a year.
"Violent crime is a concern in the Dominican Republic despite more police presence in areas often visited by tourists. Do not display wealth and be wary of meeting individuals from online in secluded locations," the Department of State warned.
"If you decide to travel to the Dominican Republic, note that violent crime is a concern throughout the country, affecting all residents regardless of nationality," the State Department wrote, including:
Robbery
Homicide
Sexual assault
The U.S. government offered these safety tips:
"Pay attention to your surroundings.
Do not carry or wear valuable items that will attract attention.
Be vigilant about where your phone is and avoid using it openly on the street.
If robbed, hand over your personal belongings without resisting.
Travel with a partner or group if possible.
Do not leave food or drinks unattended."
Other popular beach destinations also have earned level 2 advisories, suggesting using increased caution. They include Jamaica. Multiple European countries are also under similar advisories. Federal judge dismisses Shanquella Robinson wrongful death lawsuit against FBI, State Department
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A federal judge Friday dismissed the wrongful death lawsuit made by the family of Shanquella Robinson against a pair of federal agencies. The FBI and State Department had motioned to dismiss the suit in January due to the alleged lack of jurisdiction over claims made against them. Robinson's estate made the amended claims in November 2024 seeking damages from the agencies based on their alleged negligence in relation to her 2022 death in Mexico. The estate also sought immediate release of related records from the FBI. PREVIOUS: Robinson's family pushes for case to be heard in U.S. Robinson, a Charlotte woman, died while vacationing with friends at a resort in Cabo San Lucas. Court documents show the autopsy report done in Mexico showed the cause of death was a severe spinal cord injury and neck trauma. However, when her body was returned home, a second autopsy by the FBI contradicted the report. In November 2022, the FBI informed Robinson's mother, Sallamondra, 'that it opened an investigation into the murder,' but in April 2023 told Sallamondra, her family and the public that the agency was no longer pursuing federal prosecution of the Cabo Six. In Friday's ruling, U.S. District Judge Max O. Cogburn Jr. agrees with the agencies argument that the family's Freedom of Information Act claim against the FBI and State Department must be dismissed because 'this Court lacks derivative jurisdiction over Plaintiff's FOIA claim.' 'Because the North Carolina court 'never acquired jurisdiction over either the subject matter [FOIA claim] or the [FBI] as a United States agency,' this Court 'can acquire none from the removal under NC Statute 1442.' The Robinson family still has a civil lawsuit against the members of the Cabo Six, accuses them of lying about Shanquella's death and trying to cover it up. They are pushing for this case to be heard in the United States. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

American man detained in Greece over suspected double killing of infant, woman in Rome
Greek authorities detained an American man on Friday on the Greek island of Skiathos suspected of killing an infant found over the weekend in a Rome park and of having a role in the death of a woman believed to be the infant's mother, whose body was found nearby. The American, who wasn't identified, was detained on a European arrest warrant issued in Italy, citing 'strong evidence' of his suspected involvement in the death of the baby girl, chief Rome prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi told a news conference in Rome. Italian investigators said that the cause of the woman's death wasn't known, 'but there is a reasonable suspicion that it is a double murder,' deputy prosecutor Giuseppe Cascini said. 3 A firefighter truck and forensic police work at the site of the discovery of the body of an infant and the infant's mother, in Rome's Villa Pamphili park, Saturday, June 7, 2025. AP The bodies of the baby girl and mother, also believed to be American, were found in Rome's Villa Pamphili park on Saturday. The mother's body was under a black bag, having been killed several days before the infant, who was found several hundred meters away in undergrowth. Both were naked, and without any identification, Lo Voi said. The suspect, who witnesses had seen in the presence of a woman and infant, fled Italy for Skiathos on Wednesday, Lo Voi said. 3 A few feet away from the infant, the body of a woman in a closed bag was also discovered. He will be formally arrested when the warrant is forwarded to Greek officials, and will appear for an extradition hearing next week, Greek police told The Associated Press. 'It is not exactly understandable that someone who was with a woman and a baby girl, once the woman and the girl died, whom he carried in his arms, would then leave the country without calling for help, without seeking assistance,' Lo Voi said. 'In itself, that doesn't look good.' The victims' relationship with the suspect wasn't immediately clear — but video surveillance and witness reports put them together on several occasions; witnesses heard them speaking in English. They had been traced to a shelter for the needy near the Vatican, where they appeared to be a nuclear family, Corriere della Sera reported. 3 Following the deaths, police returned to the scene the following day. At one point, the pair had fought in the street, leading police to take his identity, which helped lead to him, investigators said. Authorities were able to track down the suspect thanks to fingerprints on the bag covering the woman and a scrap of a tent like ones provided to people without shelter, the newspaper said. He was located in Greece with cellphone data. According to the newspaper, the woman, who was around 30 years old, had a tattoo of a skeleton on a surfboard.
