PARIS (Reuters) -Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino outfought Salwa Eid Naser to win the women's 400 metres at the Paris Diamond League meet on Friday, Faith Cherotich won the steeplechase and Grace Stark set a personal best to outgun Tobi Amusan in the 100m hurdles.
Dominican Republic's Paulino needed a season's best time of 48.81, a new meeting record, as the world champion came from behind to pip Bahrain's Naser, who took silver at last year's Olympics.
"All I focused on was to get to through to the finish line feeling strong, although I am not feeling very well, my stomach has been playing up a bit," Paulino said.
Kenyan Cherotich took bronze at the Paris Olympics behind Ugandan silver medallist Peruth Chemutai in the 3,000m steeplechase, and the pair left the rest of the field behind early in the race.
This time 20-year-old Cherotich came out on top as she left her rival behind in the closing metres, with a personal best time of 8:53.37, to repeat her wins in Doha and Oslo.
"It's great that I have already won three Diamond Leagues this season being the youngest in the field," Cherotich said.
"The big goal are the World Championships in Tokyo and I want to win."
Nigeria's world record holder and 2022 world champion Amusan had to settle for second place as American 24-year-old Stark led from the start to win the women's 100m hurdles in 12.21 seconds, knocking one tenth of a second off her personal best.
"I wanted to break that 12.3 so bad, I was really pushing for it in Stockholm," Stark said.
"I'm just so excited to break 12.3, I really knew I could do it this year."
In the men's 400m hurdles, Olympic champion Rai Benjamin barely broke sweat in setting a meeting record 46.93, doing enough down the home straight to hold off Qatar's Abderrahman Samba, who had set the previous record back in 2018.
"I just took it easy because we just had a really fast race in Stockholm. There was no need to come out and force something, especially because the season is so long," Benjamin said.
MAHUCHIKH OUTJUMPED
Ukrainian Olympic high jump champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh broke the world record with a leap of 2.10 meters at last year's meeting, but she could only manage 1.97 this time to take second place behind Australia's Nicola Olyslagers.
The men's 1,500m may not have been a Diamond League event, but the race had the home crowd on their feet as France's Azeddine Habz smashed the national record with a world leading time of 3:27.49.
Habz took almost a second and a half off the previous record set in 2003, and ran the sixth fastest time ever over the distance.
"It's incredible, there is no other word," Habz said.
"I had come to this meeting with the goal of breaking the French record."
Kenya's Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech came second with an impressive 3:27.72, breaking the world under-20 record.
Another non-Diamond League race, the men's 3000m steeplechase, saw the return to the track of Ethiopia's Lamecha Girma after his heavy fall which left him unconscious at the Paris Olympics.
Girma returned to the scene of his world record from 2023, and was happy to get the race, and win, under his belt.
"This is a big thing for me today, especially after the Paris Olympics," Girma said.
"It feels it was a long time ago, so this was very important for me. The legs not much of a problem, but I was a little scared. Now that the race is finished I feel much better."

The duo then continued their fine form by winning the Indian Open in January but have not reached the semi-finals in any of their outings since. Sze Fei-Izzuddin have two big tournaments coming up next month - the back-to-back Japan Open from July 15-20 and China Open from July 22-27. The duo need to do well in both the tourneys to protect their ranking points from last year and maintain their No. 1 ranking. Sze Fei-Izzuddin's biggest challengers to the top spot seem to be fellow Malaysians Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, who are currently No. 2 in the world. The latter, who have been on fire since April, are keen to overtake the former and become No. 1 themselves for the first time. Rashid Sidek not in favour of 'longer tournaments'
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Rashid Sidek feels that the idea of increasing Super 1000 tournaments from six days to 11 will not necessarily reduce the physical and mental stress of shuttlers. In fact, the former Olympic bronze medallist feels that the players will be saddled with more financial burden if BWF implements the format in 2027 as not all the top 15 singles and top 10 pairs enjoy lucrative sponsorships. Rashid said the current six-day competition format should be maintained if the world body is to safeguard player welfare. "I feel it's pointless to increase to 11 days because this will put more financial burden on the players. They have to fork out more for accomodation and food," said Rashid. "We have to remember that not all players get big sponsorships. The top eight in singles and doubles may enjoy financial security, but the rest will struggle. "Tennis grand slams are held for two weeks because they have over seven rounds and matches can last for five hours. "Let's not talk about the prize money because there is a huge difference between the Grand Slams and badminton's Super 1000 events." The Wimbledon, for example, offered a jaw-dropping £3 million (RM17.17m) for the men's singles champion this year while the men's singles winner of the China Open, a Super 1000 event, received US$140,000 (RM595,488). Rashid believes lengthy Super 1000 tournaments may satisfy fans, boost ticket sales and leading to more live coverage, but it will be a burden for the organisers as well. "The organising costs of Super 1000 events will also increase and some countries may find it harder to host big World Tour events. "However, increasing the prize money should help the players earn more, and they will not be tempted to play in too many events," added Rashid.

Motorcycling-Marquez claims 100th career pole with lap record in Italian GP qualifying

It was Marquez's sixth pole of the season and the 72nd MotoGP pole of his career to go with his 14 poles in Moto2 and 14 more in the 125cc World Championship. "I'm super happy because it was a real pole position, it was without (using) the slipstreams, alone and just trying to find my limits," Marquez said. "The pace was not bad but (I have to) be patient because in the afternoon with a warm temperature, it can change everything. But at the moment we are there and ready to fight for the sprint and main race." Marquez initially took provisional pole when he slotted in behind his brother Alex and used the Gresini bike's slipstream to his advantage. As Alex crossed the line with the fastest time, Marc snatched top spot from him less than a second later with a lap record. Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo then broke the record but before he could celebrate, Marc's Italian team mate Francesco Bagnaia went even faster on his home track where he has won the last three Grands Prix. However, Marc had one more flying lap left in him and when the Spaniard crossed the line, he set a time of one minute and 44.169 seconds to pip Bagnaia to pole by 0.059 seconds. Alex will join them on the front row. "I tried everything in qualifying, Marc was in super shape and it's tough to beat him. I wanted to start on the front row and this was the best result in qualifying (for me) this season," Bagnaia said. Quartararo was only fourth fastest despite breaking the lap record and he will be joined on the second row by KTM's Maverick Vinales and VR46 Racing's Franco Morbidelli.
