Forum: Much to be grateful for this election period
T he period from Nomination Day to Polling Day gave us Singaporeans much to think about, more to be thankful for and also some laughs along the way.
While Gen Z voters might think differently from Pioneer Generation voters before stamping their X on their ballot paper, it was heartening to know that most Singaporeans voted wisely for credible candidates for the near and distant future.
Political parties may engage in 'negative politics' but we should be thankful that it went only as far as 'the pot calling the kettle black' here, and did not sink to the below-the-belt blows and us-versus-them politics seen elsewhere.
There are many ways to bring issues up, whether hot-button or bread-and-butter.
There are constructive, feasible and pragmatic suggestions to solve these issues, and there are destructive, impractical and fear-mongering ones that are made simply to stir up resentment.
Perhaps that is why there were high winning percentages in the 70s and even 80s versus below 1 per cent vote shares, a clear indication that substance matters.
It was reassuring that all political parties came out to give a resounding response that Singapore's future is for Singapore and Singaporeans to decide.
Foreign entities should not try to drive a wedge into our decades-long striving for racial and religious harmony.
It was good to see candidates and their leaders swiftly rejecting the use of derogatory language with racial and sexist innuendos, apologising for insensitivity and condemning ignorance.
As the dust settles after this gruelling period, let Singapore and Singaporeans embrace a new hope for our accidental city-state in this crazy, turbulent world, and may wisdom trump ignorance always.

Philippines' Marcos mulls quarterly performance reviews for Cabinet members

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr also clarified that recent changes in his Cabiney should not be seen as a "revamp". PHOTO: REUTERS MANILA, Philippines - President Ferdinand Marcos Jr on June 10 said he is considering conducting performance assessments of Cabinet members every quarter. He said this during an ambush interview in Malacanang when asked if there were any new developments in the evaluation of agency heads and other officials. 'It is an ongoing thing. This is something; it is essentially putting all government agencies and departments on notice that we have to do better. And we will be looking very, very closely, and we will make that review on a periodic basis,' he said. 'Maybe on a quarterly basis. We'll see if we've achieved our targets, on a quarterly basis. And we'll be much, much more rigorous in looking at the performance, not only at the top level, but all the way. All the way. And that's why we'll see, I'm sure you will see more changes in the future,' he added. Mr Marcos also clarified that recent changes in his Cabinet should not be seen as a 'revamp.' 'You know, I have to explain that it's not a Cabinet revamp. What we really did was we are still in the process of examining… What happened really here was that I put everyone on notice that you are all on, basically all on probation,' he said. On May 22, Mr Marcos called for the courtesy resignation of all Cabinet members as part of his effort to recalibrate his administration following the results of the recent elections. 'The people have spoken, and they expect results, not politics, not excuses. We hear them, and we will act,' he said. 'It's time to realign government with the people's expectations,' he added. Israel strikes Yemen's port of Hodeidah, Houthi-run Al Masirah TV reports

DUBAI - Israeli forces carried out two airstrikes on the docks of Yemen's Red Sea port of Hodeidah, Houthi-run Al Masirah TV said on Tuesday. There were no immediate reports of casualties. The strikes come after the Israeli military on Monday urged the evacuation of the Houthi-controlled ports of Ras Isa, Hodeidah, and Salif. Israeli authorities have not confirmed the strikes, but Israeli media, citing unnamed officials, said the navy was targeting sites in Yemen. Since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023, the Iran-aligned Houthis have fired at Israel and at shipping in the Red Sea in what it says are acts of solidarity with the Palestinians. Most of the dozens of missiles and drones fired towards Israel have been intercepted or fallen short. Israel has carried out a series of retaliatory strikes. The U.S. also launched intensified strikes against the Houthis this year, before halting the campaign after the Houthis agreed to stop attacks on U.S. ships. China's Xi urges respect, ‘right track' in call with South Korean counterpart

PHOTO: EPA-EFE In their first phone call since Mr Lee took office last week, Mr Xi said a healthy and stable China-South Korea relations were conducive to regional. PHOTO: REUTERS BEIJING - Chinese President Xi Jinping told South Korean President Lee Jae-myung on June 10 that the two countries should respect each other's core interests and major concerns, and ensure ties move forward 'on the right track', Chinese state media reported. In their first phone call since Mr Lee took office last week, Mr Xi said healthy, stable and continuously deepening China-South Korea relations were conducive to regional and world peace and stability, according to state broadcaster CCTV. China is South Korea's biggest trading partner, and diplomatic relations between the two have improved since a 2017 spat over South Korea's installation of a US missile defence system that Beijing opposed. Mr Xi urged the two countries to strengthen exchanges, adhere to the direction of 'friendly neighbours' and jointly safeguard global and regional industrial, supply chains. A strategic cooperative partnership between both countries would bring more benefits to both and 'inject more certainty into the chaotic regional and international situation.' 'It is necessary to respect each other's core interests and major concerns, firmly grasp the general direction of bilateral relations, and ensure that relations always move forward on the right track,' Mr Xi was quoted as saying by CCTV. Mr Lee's decisive victory in last week's snap election stands to usher in a sea-change in Asia's fourth-largest economy. He faces what could be the most daunting set of challenges for a South Korean leader in nearly three decades, ranging from healing a country deeply scarred by his predecessor's martial law attempt to tackling unpredictable protectionist moves by the United States, a major trading partner and a security ally.
