PM launches Kashmir train, Mehbooba and Mirwaiz urge release of Kashmiri prisoners
Srinagar, June 6 (UNI) As Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first Vande Bharat Express connecting Katra with Srinagar, Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti and Hurriyat Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq welcomed the improved connectivity but appealed Centre to release Kashmiri prisoners ahead of Eid for healing and justice.
PDP chief Mehbooba welcomed the launch of Vande Bharat connecting Kashmir to Jammu via rail and said this long-awaited step promises ease for commuters & boosts connectivity in our region.
The former chief minister urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to show statesmanship by releasing Kashmiri youth and political detainees.
'On the solemn occasion of Eid Al Adha, I urge Hon'ble PM to consider releasing Kashmiri youth jailed on mere suspicion post the Pahalgam attack. The collective condemnation of the incident by people across the political spectrum reflects our shared rejection of violence. It's time to show statesmanship and compassion, especially towards those languishing in jails across India without serious charges. Let this Eid be a moment of healing and reconciliation,' she said in a statement.
Addressing the Friday congregation at Srinagar's historic Jamia mosque in old Srinagar, Mirwaiz, who is also Kashmir's chief cleric, called for the release of prisoners on Eid-ul-Adha as a goodwill gesture.
He said that for thousands of families in J&K, the Eid festival brings more pain than joy.
'Their sons, husbands, fathers and brothers have been incarcerated for years—many without trial—in jails within and outside J&K. And each passing day, more of our youth are detained,' he said.
Mirwaiz said that all such prisoners, including political leadership, remain in the prayers and thoughts of the people.
'If the Prime Minister truly seeks to reduce the 'dil ki doori' (distance of hearts) which he often mentions in his speeches, then such humanitarian steps are the real way forward. Train links are welcome, but it is the human links that truly matter and endure,' Mirwaiz said.
Kashmir's chief cleric also termed the death of Zubair Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Srinagar, under mysterious circumstances in New Delhi on Monday deeply disturbing. While Zubair's family claimed their son was killed in Delhi, police in Delhi said there was no 'indication of foul play' in his death.

Tight security for Bakrid celebrations
Rajamahendravaram: In view of Bakrid (Eid-ul-Adha) festival on Saturday, elaborate security arrangements have been made across the district, particularly at major mosques and Eidgahs, said District Superintendent of Police D Narasimh Kishore. Speaking after a coordination meeting with religious leaders on Friday, the SP stressed the need to uphold communal harmony and urged everyone to cooperate in maintaining law and order. He also mentioned that nodal officers have been instructed to promptly respond to complaints and enforce the Andhra Pradesh Prohibition of Cow Slaughter and Animal Preservation Act-1977, Animal Transport Rules-1978, The Animal Transport (Amendment) Rules-2001 and Slaughter House Rules-2001. Citizens are encouraged to report any information related to cow slaughter or illegal transport of cattle by calling 112. The identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential, the SP assured.

Libyan PM orders investigation into clashes in coastal city
Tripoli, June 7 (UNI) Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamed Dbeibah on Friday ordered an investigation into clashes that broke out Thursday in the northwestern coastal city of Sabratha. The Information Office of the Prime Minister said in a statement that Dbeibah had instructed the commander of the Western Military Zone "to start an immediate and thorough investigation" into the clashes. "The instructions are part of orders made yesterday to assign the Western Military Zone commander to urgently interfere on ground and stop the fighting," the statement added. According to local media, clashes broke out on Thursday between rival armed groups in Sabratha, some 70 km west of the capital Tripoli, and lasted until Friday morning. Bangladesh CA Mohd Yunus announces national elections in April 2026
Dhaka, June 6 (UNI) Bangladesh Interim Government Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus today announced that the much-awaited next national election will take place in the first half of April 2026. In a televised address to the nation on the eve of Eid-ul-Azha, he said that the Election Commission will provide a detailed roadmap for the elections in due course, the Daily Star reported. He said the interim government took office based on the three main mandates of having reform, justice and elections. "In that regard, I believe that by the next Eid-ul-Fitr, we will be able to reach an acceptable point on reform and justice. Especially, all will be able to see visible progress on the trial of crimes against humanity – which is the government's collective responsibility towards the martyrs of the July mass uprising," he said. "The government has held discussions with all parties to organise the most free, fair, competitive and acceptable elections in history. In addition, after reviewing the ongoing reform activities related to justice, reform and elections, I am announcing to the people of the country today that the next national elections will be held on a day in the first half of April 2026," Yunus said. This is a major development in the context of Bangladesh's politics after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government in August 2024. Yunus, on several occasions during the past few months, has said that the next elections will take place between December 2025 and June 2026, based on the extent of refroms. However, BNP and like minded parties have been demanding that the election takes place by December this year. National Citizen Party, the newly formed political party comprised of July uprising leaders, have been pushing for the election to be held after the reforms are completed. Jamaat-e-Islami intially had a similar stance to the NCP. The party then said the election can take place in February, before Ramadan. Last week, top Jamaat leaders said the election can take place between December and April. Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman, on May 21, said the national election should be held by December this year. "Bangladesh needs political stability. This is only possible through an elected government, not by unelected decision-makers," one source quoted the army chief as saying in an Officers' Address. Yunus, in his address to the nation today, also said the government wants an election that will satisfy the souls of the martyrs of the mass uprising. "We want the largest number of voters, the largest number of candidates and parties to participate in the next election. Let it be remembered by the nation as the most free, fair and impartial election", he hoped. Yunus also urged people to extract specific promises from the political parties that they will never, under any circumstances, violate the people's democratic rights and human dignity. He also reminded the people of the country that this election is not just about peaceful elections. It is an election to build a 'New Bangladesh', the aspiration of the students and the masses.
