Four bombs defused in Phuket as two suspects arrested
Police in Thailand on June 24 arrested two suspects who are believed to have placed bombs at tourist hotspots around the resort island of Phuket , including its airport.
Malaysian news outlet Bernama on June 27 , citing The Bangkok Post , said the police defused four explosive devices.
This consisted of a motorcycle that was packed with explosives and abandoned near the passenger terminal at Phuket International Airport , two explosive devices found at Patong Beach , located in the west of the island, and one more situated at Promthep Cape , all the way in the south.
The suspects were reported to have given up information on the explosive devices, and are said to come from the southern Thai province of Pattani .
Their motive however remains unclear.
Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has since put all government agencies on high alert, stressing the need for increased vigilance, while reassuring tourists that it was safe to travel.
Citing reports from different agencies, she said the incidents suggested an attempt to create unrest in the region.

Earlier this month, the Ukrainian military carried out a major strike, dubbed "Operation Spider's Web," in which large numbers of long-range Russian bombers were hit at several Russian airbases far from Ukrainian territory. The latest statement said the damage caused by the strike on Marinovka was being assessed. It described the Su-34 as Russia's main aircraft used in bombing raids on Ukrainian territory, deployed in particular for launching guided bombs, used increasingly in attacks on Ukrainian cities. PHOTO: REUTERS Families of French citizens detained in Iran plead for proof of life after Israel prison strike PARIS - The families of Cecile Kohler and her partner Jacques Paris, two French citizens detained in Iran since 2022, issued urgent pleas on June 27 for proof the pair are still alive, days after an Israeli strike hit Tehran's Evin prison where they are held. Evin prison is known as Iran's most notorious facility for political prisoners, and where Iran has often held foreign nationals, including Paris and Kohler who are accused of spying and seeking to stir up unrest. France has called the charges baseless and has demanded their immediate release for three years. Israel struck the prison on June 23, one of the last targets hit in its 12-day air campaign that ended with a ceasefire the following morning. Iran has said some people died in the attack but the fate of the French prisoners remained unclear. France has condemned the strikes on the prison, accusing Israel of putting two of its citizens in danger. 'We are desperate, terrorised,' said Ms Anne-Laure Paris, daughter of Jacques Paris, calling on Iranian authorities to provide immediate evidence that the pair survived and to secure their release within hours. According to their families, the last confirmed contact with the prisoners was on May 30 during a consular visit. 'No one, not us, the families or the French authorities, have been able to make direct contact with them,' Ms Noemie Kohler, Cecile Kohler's sister, said. 'We are waiting for immediate sign of life from Cecile and Jacques... to make sure they are really okay and they are really alive.' They are urging the French government to support 'exfiltration on grounds of force majeure,' pointing to the dangers posed by ongoing conflict and an unstable ceasefire. A formal request is also being prepared for submission within hours to the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture. France in May filed a case at the World Court against Iran for violating the right to consular protection a bid to pressure Iran over the detention of its two citizens. Iran's Revolutionary Guards have detained dozens of foreign and dual nationals in recent years, often on espionage-related charges. Rights groups and Western countries accuse Tehran of using foreign detainees as bargaining chips, which Iran denies. Chatty AI bots put to work in Australia's fight against fraud
When a scammer calls or texts, the AI bots—sophisticated digital decoys—spring into action. PHOTO ILLUSTRATION: PEXELS Scammers targeting people in Australia may soon find themselves talking not to victims but to bots instead. On June 27 , Australia's largest bank Commonwealth Bank of Australia deployed 10,000 artificial intelligence bots to disrupt scam operations, engage scammers in extended conversations, and gather valuable intelligence in real time. When a scammer calls or texts, the multilingual AI chatbots create voice clones that keep fraudsters on lengthy phone calls. During the calls, the bots also extract as much intelligence as possible and feed real-time insights directly into the bank's scam-control systems. 'Scammers are increasingly using AI to target Australians – we're turning the tables by using AI to fight back. Every minute a scammer is engaging with a bot is a minute they're not targeting an Australian,' the bank's group fraud general manager James Roberts said. Developed in partnership with cyber-intelligence firm the initiative is based on a honeypot strategy, which refers to a security mechanism that creates a virtual trap to lure attackers. Professor Dali Kaafar, founder and chief executive of said: 'In the fight against scams, timing is everything. Our intelligence gives organisations like Commonwealth Bank the edge, not just to detect scams, but to anticipate and block it before it reaches customers.' According to data from Australia's National Anti-Scam Centre, phone scams were the most financially damaging form of scams in 2024, with 2,179 victims losing A$107.2 million (S$89.3 million). Text messages were the second most common contact method used by scammers, with investment scams responsible for the highest losses via this channel. Beyond immediate engagement, the bots also help identify emerging scam trends, improve the bank's scam detection capabilities, and support collaborative efforts to shut down scam networks industry-wide. In Singapore, the AI model Meralion screens phone calls and intercepts potentially fraudulent ones, preventing scammers from reaching their intended victims. The Singlish-savvy national AI program, developed by the A*Star Institute for Infocomm Research, is available for the public to install for free. If a call is flagged as suspicious, Meralion answers on behalf of the user, identifies itself as an AI assistant, and prompts the caller to explain the reason for the call. Based on the response, the bot decides whether to connect or block the call entirely. Meralion is also capable of blocking robocalls – automated calls frequently used by scammers to reach large numbers of victims at once.
