Malaysia Intensifies Aerospace, Maritime Growth To Strengthen Economic Resilience

Barnama21-05-2025

KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) reaffirmed the nation's commitment to accelerating growth in the aerospace, and shipbuilding and ship repair (SBSR) sectors to strengthen economic resilience.
In a statement today, MIDA said that these industries are key pillars of the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030, which aims to transform Malaysia into a future-ready, innovation-driven economy.
'As global supply chains face ongoing disruptions and the race for technological leadership intensifies, Malaysia is doubling down on its strategic industries to secure long-term economic resilience and regional influence,' it said.
MIDA said Malaysia is leveraging its strategic location and skilled workforce to become a preferred hub for advanced aerospace and maritime industries.
'MIDA is actively supporting investors to pioneer sustainable technologies, strengthen supply chains, and build industrial ecosystems that withstand global headwinds,' it said.
MIDA said it also aims to elevate Malaysia's status as a regional aerospace hub, particularly in maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), manufacturing, and engineering services.
'With the global aerospace value chain shifting towards Asia, Malaysia is seizing the opportunity to enhance its competitiveness and capabilities.
'Malaysia's aerospace ambitions gained significant momentum in 2024, with nine approved projects valued at RM1.4 billion, 71 per cent from international investors.
'This achievement underscores growing global confidence in Malaysia's comprehensive aerospace ecosystem, particularly in MRO, manufacturing and engineering services,' it said.

Naimah to challenge MACC's freezing order on overseas assets

Published on: Wednesday, June 04, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 04, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: MACC obtained a court order to freeze £132 million or RM758.2 million worth of assets in London belonging to Naimah Khalid and her family. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Naimah Khalid, the widow of former finance minister Daim Zainuddin, will challenge the court order obtained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to freeze RM758 million worth of assets abroad linked to her and her family. Naimah claimed that the assets were lawfully acquired and that her lawyers would immediately move to set aside the freezing order, which was granted ex parte. 'I will challenge this order to defend what should never be taken from any of us: our rights, our voice, and a country governed by law, not by fear. 'Let there be no doubt that I will fight this politically motivated, reckless, vindictive and lawless action, through all legal means at my disposal,' she said in a statement today. She argued that no reasonable person would say the order was in accordance with fairness or the rules of natural justice, accusing MACC of obtaining it by ambush. The Kuala Lumpur High Court reportedly granted MACC's application to freeze £132 million (RM758.2 million) worth of assets in London belonging to Naimah and her family. The assets include two commercial buildings, five luxury residences, and one bank account, Utusan Malaysia reported. Naimah alleged that the move was part of a 'long and continuous smear campaign' against her family by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki since late 2022. 'No crime of any kind has ever been proven against Daim. No charges were brought in his lifetime, and none after his death,' she said, adding that the Anti-Money Laundering Act cited by MACC required a serious offence to be proven first. She warned that failure to push back against such actions would embolden those in power to act with impunity. 'A line has been crossed. And if we do not resist, there may soon be no lines left at all. Then no Malaysian will be safe from the reach of unchecked power,' she said. Daim was charged in January last year with failing to declare assets to MACC, including interests in 38 companies, 19 land plots in five states, six properties, two unit trust accounts and seven luxury vehicles. MACC said he had asked for five deadline extensions but still failed to comply. After Daim's death on Nov 13 last year, the prosecution withdrew the charges, and the court granted an order discharging and acquitting him. Naimah also faces an asset declaration charge. She is accused of failing to declare her ownership in various companies, several plots of land here and in Penang, and two vehicles. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Scams, trust issues plague secondhand motorcycle market in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's secondhand motorcycle market continues to grapple with trust issues as buyers face growing risks of fraud and a lack of transparency in transactions. chief executive officer Gil Carmo said unlike the used car segment, the motorcycle resale market remains largely informal and often operates without standardised inspection or certification systems. 'With online classifieds and social media enabling easy access to buyers, fraudsters can post seemingly attractive listings, sometimes priced below market value, to lure in victims. 'The lack of traceable sellers and formal platforms allows such scams to persist, and without physical showrooms or accountability, it becomes difficult to take action once buyers are deceived,' he told Bernama. Carmo stressed the importance of buyer education and awareness, noting that red flags often include listings without warranty or return policies, unverified sellers, and prices that appear too good to be true. 'Although efforts are underway by some market players to introduce structured inspections, verified documentation, and post-sale protections, there is still room for the industry to improve buyer safeguards and overall transparency. 'Buyers deserve peace of mind just as much as a good price, and until that becomes the norm, trust will remain the biggest hurdle,' he said. The CEO highlighted several common scams in the market, including odometer tampering, where high-mileage motorcycles are disguised as low-usage units to fetch inflated prices, a practice that continues to trap many unsuspecting buyers. 'Other scams include illegal modifications, forged ownership documents, and sellers who disappear after receiving upfront payments. 'These bikes may come with hidden reliability issues or unresolved financing status, which buyers often only discover when attempting to transfer ownership,' he said. To mitigate such risks, Carmo said his company has implemented several measures, including a 170-point inspection by in-house mechanics, verification of legal documents, and a six-day return policy with a six-month warranty. 'These steps are aimed at giving buyers peace of mind. We also ensure full transparency by using only company-taken photos and videos for listings, and we encourage test rides so buyers know exactly what they're getting,' he added. iMotorbike is a Southeast Asian online platform that facilitates the buying and selling of pre-owned motorcycles, offering services such as inspections, warranties, and financing to ensure a safe and transparent transaction experience. The Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) disclosed that total losses from commercial crimes last year amounted to RM3.11 billion, with 41,701 investigation papers initiated. Former CCID director Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf revealed that fraud was the most prevalent crime with 73,240 cases resulting in losses exceeding RM2.45 billion. Of this, online fraud accounted for 35,368 cases involving a loss of RM1.57 billion, as reported by Bernama previously.

M'sia-Russia ties to deepen with upcoming joint meeting, says Zambry

KUALA LUMPUR: Bilateral cooperation between Malaysia and Russia will be strengthened through the two countries' Joint Commission Meeting on Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation (JC-ESTC) to be held in Malaysia this year, says Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir (pic) . The Higher Education Minister said the meeting in November would, among other things, discuss proposals to expand scholarship programmes and developments in various initiatives under the JC-ESTC. "Special focus will also be given to preparations for the Malaysia-Russia Mineral Resources Dialogue and the Higher Education Forum, two key platforms to be held concurrently with the JC-ESTC Meeting. "These events are expected to bring together industry leaders, academics and researchers from both countries to enhance bilateral cooperation,' he said in a Facebook statement on Wednesday (June 4). ALSO READ: Malaysia and Russia to expand cooperation in science, higher education The meeting follows Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to Russia last month, during which he tasked several ministries, including Higher Education, with following up. Zambry said the plans were discussed during a courtesy call by Russian Ambassador to Malaysia Naiyl Latypov on Tuesday (June 3) evening. "I believe that cooperation between Malaysia and Russia will continue to be explored to build more networks across various fields, thereby creating greater opportunities and successes for the people of both nations. "The strong commitment shown by the Russian government, which also recognises Malaysia's education system as one of the best hubs in the region, underscores the need for local institutions of higher learning to continuously improve their performance,' Zambry added. – Bernama
