RNLI issue lifesaving advice to beachgoers ahead of May half term
The RNLI is reminding beachgoers to stay safe and to learn to "float to live" if they find themselves in trouble in open water.The charity said it was expecting beaches to be busy over the May half term - from Monday 26 to Friday 30 May.It said from Saturday, 66 beaches across Devon, Cornwall and Jersey would be patrolled by lifeguards.Henry Saddler-Irvine, regional lifeguard lead, encouraged the public to visit "lifeguarded beaches" and to swim within the red and yellow flags.
If people find themselves in trouble in the sea, the RNLI urged them to tilt their head back with ears submerged, try to relax, and control their breathing.Emmie Seward-Adams, from the RNLI's water safety delivery team, said: "By doing this, you give yourself the chance to rest and recover your breathing."The seas are cold enough to trigger cold water shock, while waves and rip currents can overpower even the most experienced water users."The organisation added if anyone saw someone struggling in the water, to call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.

Met Office thunderstorm warning forecasts disruption
A warning for thunderstorms has been issued across parts of England and Wales including Devon and Met Office said the warning would be active between 09:00 and 18:00 BST on Saturday and cover an area from England's south coast to the Midlands along with parts of South warning said heavy showers and thunderstorms could lead to some disruption to transport and affect journey times by car, train and said the conditions were expected for much of Saturday before fading from the west during the mid to late afternoon. The warning covers the whole of Devon and spreads into East Cornwall including Bude, Launceston and Met Office said more persistent rain and showers would arrive in the South West on Friday evening before heading to the east forecast added it would become windy in the South West by dawn on Saturday. 'Additional hazards' The Met Office said 10-15mm (1-1.5cm) of rain could fall in less than an hour while some areas could have 30-40mm (3-4cm) of rainfall over several hours with "successive showers and thunderstorms".It added the stormy conditions which might include hail could cause short-term loss of power and damage to buildings from lightning strikes."Frequent lightning, hail and strong, gusty winds will be additional hazards," the Met Office said.

RNLI crew in dramatic rescue of four paddleboarders in North Sea
The lifeboat crew were scrambled after vessel got into difficulty off the coast of Stonehaven. Four paddleboarders have been rescued from the North Sea by the RNLI after getting into difficulty. The town's RNLI volunteer crew were called to the incident off the coast of Stonehaven at around 8.15pm on Tuesday, June 3, and dispatched the lifeboat to reach their reported location. Crew members quickly located the first paddleboarder before making their way to the three remaining individuals who had drifted further out to sea, reports Aberdeen Live. Dramatic footage shared by the RNLI captured the moment the quartet were rescued from the challenging conditions, with all four safely transferred onto the lifeboat for initial casualty care. They were taken back to shore at Catterline Harbour and handed over to the care of HM Coastguard and the Scottish Ambulance Service. Montrose RNLI's all-weather lifeboat was also tasked by the Coastguard to support the incident yesterday at around 8.18pm, before being stood down at 9.34pm. Stonehaven RNLI had successfully retrieved the casualties, while the Montrose-based team located a missing paddleboard to prevent any further call outs. Kenny Jones, volunteer helm at Stonehaven RNLI, said: "Thankfully the casualties had their mobile phones with them and knew to call the coastguard when they got into difficulties. "The weather conditions off our coast can change really quickly and what starts as an adventure can quickly go wrong. It is so important that people have the equipment and knowledge they need. "Life jackets, mobile phones, VHF radios and bright clothing are simple things people can buy to help their safety but knowledge of the tides, weather forecasts, local conditions and experience are crucial when planning a trip to enjoy our beautiful coastline. "If anyone sees someone in difficulty on the coast, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard."
