Iraq, Kurdistan step up security operations
Shafaq News/ On Wednesday, Iraqi and Kurdish security forces carried out coordinated raids in Baghdad, Basra, and Erbil, arresting several suspects in a crackdown on organized crime.
In the capital, federal police apprehended two individuals in northern Baghdad accused of distributing crystal meth. Authorities seized 60 grams of the substance.
At the Shalamcheh border crossing in Basra, a foreign traveler was intercepted attempting to smuggle crystal meth hidden in a concealed compartment.
Meanwhile, in the Kurdistan Region, Asayish security forces detained two suspects and confiscated two kilograms of crystal meth, an unlicensed firearm, and two vehicles used in drug transport.
Five individuals were also arrested in Erbil's Soran district on suspicion of distributing counterfeit Iraqi dinars—specifically 25,000 and 50,000 denominations—as well as forged $100 bills.

Businessmen Arbitrarily Detained in Iraq Released

Ireland's Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Harris, has confirmed the release on bail of Robert Pether, an Australian engineer resident in Ireland, who has been imprisoned in Iraq since 2021. The announcement comes following a phone call from Iraq's Foreign Minister, Fuad Hussein, who personally informed the Tánaiste of the development. Pether, who remains in Iraq for now, has been at the centre of an ongoing diplomatic effort by the Irish government. Minister Harris described the release as " very welcome news " in what has been a " long and distressing saga " for Pether's wife and family. The Tánaiste also thanked Irish diplomatic staff in the region for their continued support and advocacy. He reiterated concerns about Pether's health and outstanding legal charges but expressed hope for a positive resolution and Pether's eventual return to his home in Roscommon. Pether and his Egyptian colleague, Khalid Radwan, were detained in April 2021 in relation to a dispute over the construction of the new Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) headquarters in Baghdad. They have been sentenced to five years in prison and jointly fined $12 million on charges of fraud. Their families claim they were tricked into travelling to Iraq to attempt to resolve the dispute. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found that they were " arbitrarily detained on discriminatory grounds ", and referred the case to the Special Rapporteur on torture. In February 2023, the International Chamber of Commerce's (ICC) Court of Arbitration ruled that the CBI was at fault in the dispute, and ordered it to pay $13m to Abu Dhabi-based Cardno ME (CME). Britain accuses trio of spying for Iran in journalist threat case
Shafaq News/ British authorities charged three men with assisting Iranian intelligence in an alleged plot to target journalists affiliated with a UK-based television station critical of Tehran. The suspects—Mostafa Sebahvand, 39; Farhad Javadimanesh, 44; and Shapour Nouri Qaleh Alikhani, 55—face charges under the UK's National Security Act, recently introduced 'to give law enforcement broader powers to counter threats posed by foreign states.' According to British police, the three are accused of 'engaging in conduct likely to assist a foreign intelligence service' between August 2024 and February 2025. The alleged activities are believed to be connected to Iran. Sebahvand faces additional charges for conducting surveillance and reconnaissance in preparation for "serious acts of violence" against an individual. Javadimanesh and Alikhani are accused of carrying out surveillance with the intent of facilitating such violence by others. All three appeared via video link at London's Old Bailey court on Friday for a preliminary hearing. Their legal representatives said they intend to plead not guilty. The suspects were remanded in custody ahead of a plea hearing scheduled for September 26. A trial is expected to begin in October next year. The arrests were carried out last month on the same day the UK's counterterrorism police detained five other individuals—four of them Iranian nationals—in a separate operation. Those five were later released without charge.

Russia strikes Kyiv with drones and missiles: 20+ casualties reported
Shafaq News/ Russia launched a wave of drone and missile attacks on Ukraine overnight, causing over 20 casualties in the capital Kyiv, Ukrainian officials said on Friday. "Kyiv came under another attack involving UAVs and ballistic missiles. Rescuers are responding to the aftermath at several locations across the city," the State Emergency Service of Ukraine wrote on Telegram. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed four deaths and 20 injuries, including 16 hospitalized. Fires reportedly broke out across several districts, affecting a residential building, a civil infrastructure facility, and a metal hangar. Train tracks in the region were also damaged, causing delays of up to 90 minutes. Western regions were also targeted. Ternopil's regional military administration chief, Vyacheslav Negoda, described it as 'the most massive' air assault to date, with multiple hits. In Lutsk, five people were injured, and damage was reported to homes, educational institutions, and a government building. Khmelnytsky also suffered building and vehicle damage. The assault follows Ukrainian drone strikes that destroyed Russian strategic bombers in recent days. According to Ukrainian intelligence, drones hidden in wooden sheds were used to destroy several nuclear-capable aircraft inside Russia. In a call with US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed retaliation, while Kremlin officials hinted at an unspecified response. Meanwhile, Ukrainian drones reportedly hit Russia's Tula region, injuring three. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobianin noted that ten drones targeting the capital were intercepted overnight.
