New Jersey leaders rally around Haddon Township restaurant owners arrested by ICE
Two days after Celal Emanet and his wife, Emine, were detained by immigration officials at their Haddon Township restaurant, Jersey Kebab, he's waiting for answers.
While Celal Emanet was released Tuesday evening with an ankle monitor, he says his wife remains held in a detention center in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
"I hope, fingers crossed, we're gonna get some good news from my lawyer," Celal Emanet said Thursday afternoon.
He said his wife is scheduled to have a bail hearing in three weeks, and they're working to get that moved up and have her return home. But the father of four said that explaining Emine's absence to one of his children, who has autism, has been a challenge.
"I told him, 'Your mom, she's at the camp with her friends.' I made up some story," Celal Emanet said.
In the days since ICE agents arrested the Emanets, the Haddon Township community has rallied around the family. On Thursday, people were taping dozens of paper hearts to the Jersey Kebab windows with messages of support.
"Literally shower these people with love ... so that everyone driving by sees the support," Gretchen Seibert from Collingswood said.
"They're good folk, and our country's better than this," Lori Keene said.
The Emanets now have the support of local leaders as well.
"What happened to Celal and Emine is outrageous. And here in Camden County, we take it as a personal attack on all of us," Camden County Commissioner Director Louis Cappelli Jr. said.
On Thursday, a group of local mayors and Camden County commissioners gathered outside the restaurant to throw their support behind the family. The lawmakers railed against the arrests and said the couple embodies the American dream.
"We couldn't ask for better people in our community, better people to have a business in our community," Haddon Township Mayor Randy Teague said.
"This family is a family that embodies the very best of Camden County. And now they're torn apart by this broken immigration system," Cappelli said.
The American immigration system was a particular focus for the lawmakers. The group referenced the bipartisan immigration deal reached by the U.S. Senate in early 2024 that President Trump, a candidate at the time, nixed.
CBS News Philadelphia has continued to reach out to ICE officials for information on Tuesday's operation at the Jersey Kebab restaurant. So far, we have not heard back.
The Emanet family says they came to the United States from Turkey legally in 2008. The family says they have since applied for green cards, but their applications have been pending since 2016.
While local leaders acknowledge there is little they can do to fix that on their own, they did vow to push officials in Washington to act.
"Contacting every one of our federal representatives in the state of New Jersey. We'll be sending a letter to the White House for whatever that's worth and using whatever resources we have to assist this family," Cappelli said.
While federal lawmakers were absent from Thursday's gathering, representatives from Sen. Cory Booker's office and Rep. Donald Norcross's office attended.
Norcross released a statement saying, "By all accounts, it appears as though Celal and Emine are upstanding members of our community who came to the United States legally and took every measure necessary to ensure they can remain living here with legal status. We must create an immigration system that stays true to our American values. My office is in direct contact with the family, and we are reaching out to the appropriate federal agencies."
"They needed to get some facts from Muhammed [Celal and Emine Emanet's son] and the family, and they're going to do whatever they can. What that is, I think they're still going through that process," Teague said.
Meanwhile, the Emanet family continues to speak with their lawyer and wait for word on when Emine Emanet will be released from custody. But Celal Emanet said the outpouring of support from the community has been overwhelming, saying he's received hundreds of texts, calls and social media messages.
"We touched their hearts with our food or our love," he said, "because we share everything."

In a report published by Air Mail, multiple women accused the 53-year-old star of Fight Club, Requiem For A Dream, Dallas Buyers Club and Suicide Squad of inappropriate behaviour. The allegations date back to the early 2000s, with one woman calling it 'an open secret' that he texted sexual remarks to teenage models. Allegations against Leto emerged last month, when DJ Allie Teilz shared an old Facebook post, written in 2012, on her Instagram Story. 'Youre [sic] not really in L.A. until Jared Leto tries to force himself on you backstage… In a kilt.. And a snow hat. I was assaulted and traumatized by this creep when I was 17,' she wrote. In separate story, she added: 'He knew my age and didn't care. What he did was predatory, terrifying and unacceptable.' One woman told the publication that in 2006, when she was 16-years-old, Leto approached her outside a Los Angeles café. She claimed Leto was sat with fellow actor Ashley Olsen – who was then 19 – and he had grabbed her arm. 'I looked down and it was Jared Leto,' she told Air Mail, adding: 'We had a quick conversation, and he got my number.' She went on to say that Leto called her home a few days later, recalling: 'I don't know if he was on drugs or what … It was the weirdest, grossest voice … [but] for me, it's Jared, you know?' 'And the conversations turned sexual,' she continued. 'He'd ask things like: 'Have you ever had a boyfriend? Have you ever sucked a dick?'' Model Laura La Rue came forward with similar claims, saying that when she was 16-years-old in 2008, she was at an event in a private residence in Beverly Hills where Leto was 'watching her so intensely'. 'He asked how old I was. I said, 'I'm 16. How old are you?'' La Rue told Air Mail. Leto, who was 36 at the time, then reportedly asked for her number. The two began an email correspondence, which resulted in her visiting Leto's home in April 2009, the outlet alleges. 'I remember him teasing me the whole time I was there,' La Rue said, adding: 'He was flirting with me. He'd lean in close, then pull away, like it was a game.' She described a separate visit when she was 17 years old, where she alleged Leto walked out of a room completely naked. 'He just walked out, dick out, like it was normal… I thought maybe this was just what adult men do,' she said. Another woman who spoke to the outlet said that she and Leto began texting while she was still underage. She alleged he would ask her inappropriate questions during her visits to his house, including 'Do any of the little boys you hang out with fuck you?' The woman alleged that once, when she was 18, Leto had 'suddenly pulled his penis out and started masturbating'. She told Air Mail: 'He walked over, grabbed my hand, and put it on him. He leaned in and said: 'I want you to spit on it.'' A representative of Leto has 'expressly denied' the multiple accusations reported in the Air Mail exposé, saying the claims were 'demonstrably false'. This is not the first time that Leto's behaviour has been questioned and called out. 'Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines' is stoking claims that Jean-Pierre is a grifter, profiting off her time in the administration by trashing the former president and the political party that gave her prominence. Knives are out among Democrats for one of their own who has now betrayed them. Like other books that have recently exposed details about Biden's poor health, Jean-Pierre's book raises questions about the White House cover-up that attempted to hide the president's mental and physical decline from voters. But party insiders continuing to squabble over whether a now former president was or was not betrayed by fellow Democrats entirely misses the larger point. Trump's ICE launches bold courthouse migrant arrest strategy to fast-track deportations Biden avoided
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials are beginning a nationwide initiative to arrest illegal immigrants after asylum hearings as they leave courtrooms, multiple sources familiar with the matter confirmed to Fox News. The effort will target those who have been living in the United States for less than two years, sources said. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) strategy aims to get illegal immigration cases dropped. Federal officials plan to arrest migrants and place them in expedited removal proceedings, fast-tracking them to deportation out of the country, allowing for almost-immediate removal without a hearing before an immigration judge, according to ICE sources. If a migrant has an active, pending court case, expedited removal cannot happen, which is why DHS officials are planning to get them dropped. Immigration judges, however, have to agree to drop cases, and so far, they are cooperating with the effort, sources said. The initiative will likely cause controversy because migrants will be disincentivized from attending asylum hearings, and it will involve arrests of migrants with no criminal histories aside from entering the United States illegally. Videos posted to social media and captured by local news across the country show the ICE arrests already happening in various courthouses. "Secretary Noem is reversing Biden's catch-and-release policy that allowed millions of unvetted illegal aliens to be let loose on American streets," a DHS spokesperson told Fox News. "This Administration is once again implementing the rule of law." The spokesperson added that "most aliens who illegally entered the United States within the past two years are subject to expedited removals." "ICE is now following the law and placing these illegal aliens in expedited removal, as they always should have been." "Biden ignored this legal fact and chose to release millions of illegal aliens, including violent criminals, into the country with a notice to appear before an immigration judge," the spokesperson said. "ICE is now following the law and placing these illegal aliens in expedited removal, as they always should have been. If they have a valid credible fear claim, they will continue in immigration proceedings, but if no valid claim is found, aliens will be subject to a swift deportation." Gregg Jarrett, Fox News legal analyst and commentator, noted the Supreme Court's recent ruling "that President Trump had the authority to end Biden's Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for certain specified migrants who have been in the U.S. for less than two years." "That means they are eligible for expedited deportation," he said. "There is no law that prevents ICE from carrying out the initiative by making arrests at immigration/asylum hearings. From a safety standpoint, it makes sense. Indeed, it has been a longstanding practice." Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, immigration attorney and CEO and owner of Lincoln-Goldfinch Law, told Fox News Digital that while "ICE can go in and conduct apprehensions in courthouses," such arrests "can be restricted" if immigration judges refuse to dismiss cases. WATCH: Attorney explains effort to detain illegal immigrants in courthouses "Because the playbook is this: the immigrant goes into their court hearing. The DHS attorney, which is essentially the prosecutor, tells the judge, 'Judge, we actually want to dismiss this case. We don't want to pursue it.' And in many instances, the judge will just dismiss over objection of the immigrant or [if] the immigrant doesn't know any better, and they say, 'Sure, that sounds great.' And then they walk out of the courtroom, and they're apprehended," Lincoln-Goldfinch explained. If judges refuse to dismiss cases, they can "maintain their own jurisdiction over what happens with [an immigrant] because this person is in immigration court proceedings and the judge gets to decide what happens to them so long as they don't dismiss the case." Jarrett believes "the likelihood of interference is minimal" when asked whether judges might try to stop the arrests. "Most asylum and deportation hearings are in front of an immigration judge who is an employee of the Justice Department," he said. "Those hearings occur in federal courthouses or detention facilities, so the likelihood of interference is minimal. You would not have, for example, a state court judge trying to interfere, as we saw in [Milwaukee, Wisconsin]." Milwaukee Judge Hannah Dugan, 65, was indicted last month on federal charges of obstruction of proceedings before a U.S. agency and unlawful concealment of an individual subject to arrest after she allegedly directed an illegal immigrant defendant to leave through a private exit at the Milwaukee County Courthouse while ICE officials were serving a warrant for his arrest. WATCH: WISCONSIN JUDGE SEEN TALKING TO ICE AGENTS Lincoln-Goldfinch, meanwhile, believes the new DHS effort is a scheme for the Trump administration to easily and quickly boost illegal immigrant apprehension numbers, and that "they are not targeting the population of immigrants that Trump and Kristi Noem purport to want to go after, and that is law-breaking, dangerous, criminal history type of immigrants." This initiative, she said, targets illegal immigrants trying to go through a legal citizenship process. "Why are we not sending ICE after the people that they're claiming are here to harm us? It doesn't make sense from a resource expenditure perspective," she said. "And I think that is the main objection. So do I think this will be challenged in court? But on top of that, I think that people should really take issue with the fact ICE is going after people who are following the rules and they're playing dirty tricks and games in order to get them to dismiss their cases and then they arrest them walking out of the courtroom." WATCH: INSIDE THE THREATS AND DANGERS ICE AGENTS FACE In an April 29 press release marking 100 days in office, DHS announced that border apprehensions were down 95% since President Donald Trump took office, and more migrants are returning to their home countries to avoid deportation. The administration also noted that it had arrested more than 158,000 illegal aliens in 2025 alone, including more than 600 members of Tren de Aragua, saying federal officials are "targeting the worst of the worst" with 75% of illegal immigrant arrests involving those with convictions or pending charges.
