Tiger Woods to design short course at historic Augusta muni
AUGUSTA, Ga. – Tiger Woods has won five green jackets at Augusta National Golf Club.
He will soon design a golf course just down the road.
Woods has been commissioned by Augusta National to design a nine-hole short course on property at Augusta Municipal Golf Course, commonly referred to as 'The Patch,' which is located about 5 miles from the home of the Masters Tournament, Masters chairman Fred Ridley announced on Monday. The par-3 layout will be called, 'The Loop,' in homage to the caddies who for decades used the course as a gathering spot.
The Patch, which received a substantial investment from Augusta National two years ago, closed last Dec. 29 to undergo an extensive renovation by architects Tom Fazio and Beau Welling. The nearly-100-year-old, 18-hole course will measure around 6,800 yards and is slated to reopen in 2026, in time for next year's Masters, along with the unveiling of The Loop.

Woods' past design projects include Bluejack National, El Cardonal at Diamante, Payne's Valley and The Hay, a redesign of Pebble Beach's nine-hole, par-3 course.
The news coincided with an announcement of plans to bring a TGR Learning Lab to Augusta in 2028. The learning center, which will operate out of a refurbished Lamar Elementary School building, will serve over 23,000 Richmond County students with a STEAM curriculum that complements the county's public school system.
'To have the ability to be able to design something that's going to impact the community, and something that I truly believe in with education and STEAM and giving back to the underserved, and be able to do this with Augusta National, man, what an honor,' Woods said via a recorded message.
Added Ridley: 'It really focuses on three things: academic achievement, health and well-being, and college and career opportunities.'
Ridley said the idea for Woods to design The Patch's short course and plant a learning lab in the city stemmed from a round of golf they played together shortly before last year's Masters.
'I thought I would mention The Patch project, which I think we were formally announcing that week at the tournament,' Ridley said. 'It was clear when I shared the concept that it sort of piqued his interest, and that was sort of the beginning of a conversation, a dialogue that took place between our organizations, and after that a few meetings took place, and the idea just sort of grew from what we were doing to how Tiger and TGR could be involved. … We also recognize the importance of deepening Tiger's legacy in Augusta and with the Masters, and this we felt was an enduring way that we could be forever connected with Tiger and all he's done at the Masters and now all that he's going to be doing in this community.'

Former LIV player receives sponsor invite into hometown Rocket Classic
James Piot will finally play his hometown PGA Tour event. The 26-year-old Piot, who grew up just outside Detroit in Canton and starred at Michigan State, received a sponsor exemption into this week's Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club. Piot got the call on Monday morning, just before he was set to tee it up in the Rocket Classic's open qualifier at Fieldstone Golf Club in Auburn Hills. 'For it to actually happen is the coolest thing in the world,' Piot told the Detroit News on Monday. 'It's awesome. Just the fact I finally get to play in the Rocket Classic, it's a dream come true. Ever since the event was created on the schedule, I wanted to be a part of it.' This will mark Piot's first PGA Tour start in over three years. He competed in four Tour events, plus the Masters and U.S. Open, in 2022, a year after he won the 2021 U.S. Amateur at Oakmont. But Piot's Tour future – including a likely invite into the Rocket – was put on hold when he opted to join LIV Golf for the league's inaugural season in June 2022. Piot also competed the following season on LIV, but after finishing 47th in points, just inside the open zone, his contract was not renewed by the HyFlyers, the team captained by Phil Mickelson. Piot's PGA Tour suspension ended in October 2023. He has played mostly on the Asian Tour since his LIV stint ended, but earlier this year he Monday-qualified for the Korn Ferry Tour's Lecom Suncoast Classic, where he missed the cut.

Three Spartans listed in the field for the 2025 Rocket Mortgage Classic
Starting on Thursday, the PGA Tour is returning to Detroit, for the Rocket Mortgage Classic at the Detroit Golf Club. This will be the seventh edition of the tournament in Detroit, the PGA Tour's return to Michigan. For the event coming to Detroit, the Spartans are going to be nicely represented, with there being a trio of players from the Michigan State golf program set to play in the event. Ryan Brehm, a long time PGA Tour veteran, and a 2008 graduate of Michigan State that helped lead MSU to three Big Ten Championships, will be the Spartans headliner in the event. The one-time PGA Tour winner, and Mt. Pleasant native, will look to tally his second win while in Detroit. James Piot will also make his return to the PGA Tour. The 2021 US Amateur Champion and a 2021 MSU graduate, Piot played in the Masters Tournament and the US Open with his amateur status after winning the 2021 US Am. After turning pro, he played on the LIV Golf Tour for a year. He has joined the field as an unrestricted sponsors exemption. Ashton McCulloch is the final Spartan in the field. A 2025 graduate, McCulloch still has his amateur status, and will be making his fourth start on the PGA Tour. It is expected that he will likely turn pro following this event, where he got in with a sponsors exemption. Masters Winner Sounds Off on Keegan Bradley's Ryder Cup Hopes
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Golf fans eagerly await the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, which is less than 100 days away. Team USA was embarrassed two years ago in Rome and will look to avenge that loss. The loss prompted a switch at captain, with Keegan Bradley accepting the role. One of the biggest talking points had been whether Bradley would become the first playing captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963. On Sunday, Bradley pulled off an amazing comeback to win the Travelers Championship. While doing so, he showed grit, pure emotion, and the clutch gene, all things a captain typically looks for in choosing players. (Photo by) MoreAfter the win, CBS Sports analyst and 2008 Masters champion Trevor Immelman chimed in on the topic. "You can not even start an argument with me trying to explain that he [Keegan Bradley] is not one of the 12 best American golfers in the world. In my opinion, he is one of the top six or seven." "You can not even start an argument with me trying to explain that [Keegan Bradley] is not one of the 12 best American golfers in the world. In my opinion, he is one of the Top 6 or 7."@TrevorImmelman discusses the possibility of Keegan Bradley being Captain and playing for… — CBS Sports (@CBSSports) June 22, 2025 Bradley previously disclosed that he would only play if he were to automatically qualify. In order to do that, he would have to finish in the top six of the American Ryder Cup standings. Entering the week, the New England native was 17th in the Ryder Cup rankings. Following Sunday's victory, he is projected to move into ninth. With the top six automatically qualifying, that leaves six spots for the captain to decide upon. He is surrounded by players such as Patrick Cantlay, Ben Griffin, Andrew Novak, Brian Harman, Harris English, and Maverick McNealy. Of those players, Bradley is the most distinguished with eight PGA Tour victories. Only he and Harman have won a major championship. But knowing the momentum and passion that the European squad will bring to New York, Bradley might make the most sense. What do you think? Should Keegan select himself if he doesn't already qualify?
