M3GAN 2.0
Having a bunch of tech tycoons getting set upon by killer AI dolls feels like an easy win for Hollywood right now. Who doesn't want to see thinly veiled versions of Sam Altman and Elon Musk trying to fight off the psychotic fruits of their labours?
Form an orderly queue, then, for an unceasingly silly and consistently entertaining sequel that delivers more – quite a lot more – of the knowing, campy shocks that made 2023's original a box-office hit and TikTok sensation.
2.0 picks up a little after M3GAN left off. The murderous robot girl-doll has been vanquished; its creator, repentant toy inventor Gemma (Allison Williams) has emerged from a stretch in prison vowing to bringing kids' tech usage under control, with some help of a non-profit run by eligible altruist Christian (SNL 's Aristotle Athari giving major ketamine). Meanwhile, Gemma's niece, Cady (Violet McGraw) has learnt some key life lessons from her doll friend's kill spree. Namely: be more like Steven Seagal.
Even her newfound martial arts skills can't help her, or her aunt, when a power-lusting tech baron (a scene-stealing Jemaine Clement) and the FBI come knocking – the latter looking for help to track down a rogue militarised AI doll called AMELIA (Ivanna Sakhno) made with Gemma's designs.
Luckily – or unluckily – M3GAN is still out there in the ether, initially as a Siri-like presence, then in a winningly daft twist, reembodied into a sulky robot companion toy, and finally as a upgraded version of her old self. But can the calculating M3GAN really be trusted to help? Probably not.
The lack of shocks never detracts from the fun
Expanding the canvas (and the runtime) to a convoluted degree, returning writer-director Gerard Johnstone finds inspiration in classics as diverse as Terminator 2, Fritz Lang's Metropolis, Frankenstein, and Home Alone in the highly-calibrated mayhem that follows. Chucky, too, of course.
Like the first movie, it's not especially scary, but the lack of shocks never detracts from the fun, as the sarky, super-smart doll slowly reclaims the stage. It works best as a comedy, with one Kate Bush musical moment a major highlight.
M3GAN 2.0 continues to offer up a goofy brand of cautionary tale, too: against AI, tech dependence, and Silicon Valley types who want to stick a chip in their brains. You can take that seriously as you want to, just don't be surprised to find yourself watching it again on your cellphone one day.

Pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter reveals alternative album cover ‘approved by God' after artwork controversy
POP singer Sabrina Carpenter has announced an alternative album cover 'approved by God' after the original artwork sparked controversy. The Espresso star, 26, stirred up outrage with the image for her forthcoming release, titled Man's Best Friend. Advertisement 2 Pop star Sabrina Carpenter stirred up outrage with this image for her forthcoming release, titled Man's Best Friend. Credit: instagram 2 Sabrina's alternate album cover that's 'approved by God' It was deemed degrading as it showed her on her knees in front of a man pulling her hair. But last night, the US singer shared a black and white photo showing herself holding a man's arm — which will be a second option for fans. Confirming the update, Sabrina wrote on Instagram: 'Here is a new alternate cover approved by God available now on my website.' Despite being liked by 4.7 million fans on social media, Sabrina's original artwork was condemned as 'regressive' by domestic violence charities. Advertisement While the former Disney Channel star has been praised in the past for 'owning' her sexuality in a feminist way, it seemed her latest display had gone too far for many. One fan on X labelled it 'straight-up Pornhub fantasy'. The singer had already caused controversy earlier this year with her eye-popping legs-akimbo performance in red lingerie at the Brits, which prompted more than 900 Ofcom complaints from viewers who thought her scantily clad writhing wrong for a pre-watershed audience. Nicknamed Polly Pocket by fans because of her tiny 5ft stature, Sabrina's saccharinely sexy stage outfits, which often comprise lacy, pastel underwear, stockings and vintage baby-doll nighties, have been branded Lolita-like in the past. Lauren Goodger 'back with Charles' as they enjoy double date with TOWIE cast
Reality TV star Lauren Goodger has all but confirmed her rekindled relationship with ex Charles Drury after the pair were seen enjoying a double date with her Towie co-stars Junaid Ahmed and Joe Blackman Lauren Goodger appears to have confirmed a reunion with Charles Drury after months of speculation, as the pair enjoyed a double date with her Towie co-stars. The 38-year-old reality star and Charles, 26, share their three-year-old daughter Larose and separated in 2022 following the heartbreaking loss of their baby daughter, Lorena. Rumours about their reconciliation have been swirling for a while, but Lauren's recent repost of Junaid Ahmed's Instagram story -captioned 'Double dating @joeblackman_98 @laurengoodger @ - strongly suggests they're back together. The group spent the evening at Cinnamon, an Indian restaurant in Epping, marking Lauren's first public appearance with Charles in a long time. Their reunion first sparked buzz after a joint TikTok live session with Junaid and Joe, Lauren's first live video on the platform in over a year. Reflecting on their co-parenting journey last year, Lauren told MailOnline: 'It has not been easy, but we're at a place at the minute where it is running smoothly. Charles sees Larose very regularly. It's a lot of travelling for me because he lives 3.5 hours away, and I meet him in the middle. It's not ideal but it is what it is.' The couple endured a devastating tragedy in 2022 when their newborn Lorena died during childbirth. Lauren had been thrilled to welcome their second child just months after Larose, describing Lorena as the 'most beautiful healthy baby she'd ever seen' before her life was cut short by complications. Reflecting on the tragic loss of her daughter, Lauren told Mirror that, sadly, it is a pain that never leaves - but is one you gradually learn to live with. 'Nothing can make it better and I don't think anything can change the loss, the pain never leaves you,' says Lauren, whose daughter Lorena was born with the umbilical cord knotted and around her neck and passed shortly after labour, despite a 'textbook' pregnancy. 'Lorena was a beautiful baby, there was no complications with me or her and it never should have happened. She should be with us now,' says Lauren. Though she admits you never stop grieving, the TOWIE star says it's important to remember not to blame yourself, something she found herself doing, after losing Lorena. 'You go back and think, 'Should I have been in hospital rather than a home birth? Should I have done this, or done that? But I had a home birth the year before and it was absolutely fine, so there was nothing that could have been done. I think when anyone loses anyone, we think about what we should have done. As a parent, you just keep going over it. "You think, 'Why me? What have I done wrong?' But in time you heal, and that's the positive part. You never get over it but you do learn to live with it.' Admitting that the loss not only impacts parents as singulars, but it can also 'break' a relationship, Lauren says: 'Losing a child can give a massive strain on the relationship - it can make or break you. It can break families but I really do hope that they stick together and get through it because they're going to need each other. "That's one bit of advice I'd give to anyone, stick together and you'll get through it together,' continued Lauren. Lorena wasn't Lauren's first child - with the star already sharing Larose, who turns four next month, with Charles. Lauren said being a mum that got her through the grief of losing a child, admitting that she threw all of her focus into Larose.
